hey kids, welcome back...
I -hadn't- heard about that Aussie player, look somewhat interesting. And, yes, many of us hold Oppo to a higher standard, given their trackrecord...
I think I'm in the majority of those that expected two things with this player - region lock for BD, region unlockability for SD.
Now, without straying into unfortunate areas, the following should be accepted - there are hardware limitations, and software limitations, about playback features for this player. We know, for example, that the lack of DVD-A at launch is, for all but the most castastrophic of circumstances, strictly a software fix. Similarly, we know the player can do PAL>NTSC conversion, so that too is covered. What it can't do, and (apparently) will never do is Region free SD playback.
Given that region restrictions are a condition of the firmware software, and that BD an SD playback would occupy two completely seperate code sets, it's difficult for me to see the challenge in, say, unlocking SD, while leaving BD set to region 1. This is not to say that a remote option would do the trick, as, of course, that would depend on the software being conducise to such a change.
Thus, we are left with Oppo giving us a FW that allows for region change, or using another player to do region free playback (I'll leave Smarty's "backup" solution alone, as, regardless of the legality, it's still mega high on the PITA factor).
Ironically, this was the one carry over feature I thought would be a no brainer (DVD-A was the one I was worried about, and I'm extremely pleased to see that they're commited to adopting playback for this). I too would be looking at a 3 player system - 980 for region free/DVD-A, PS3 for Tversity, and the Oppo for regular BD playback. I no longer need the 7.1 analogue, but for years I used that connection into my HK for DVD-A/SACD (even using a Zektor switch for a year!), and respect the advantages to those with primo systems without HDMI. I'm very interested to hear what this player will do with BD-Live material, how it will seamlessly handle Bitstream signals when switching to PiP, how Java menus really hold up, and whether I really can replace the PS3 with this for every BD disc.
Switching out my 980/PS3 como for an '83 would be a no brainer, save for the couple dozen or so multi region discs that are -must owns- for me (couple Von Triers, UK version of Tommy, etc.)
At any rate, I'm grateful for the mods for their patience with this thread, and hope there are those that care to express their feelings on the matter. I'd also love to hear from those that could shed light on how the BDA has been advocating OEMs to deal with SD region locking, and other "political" matters regarding these formats.
