Have a question

Ive got an old Sony STR-SE501 surround sound. It is probably from about 1999. It was rarely ever used and sat in a box for a long time. Here is what I have now: My PS3 is hooked up to my tv with an HDMI cable. This is the only thing I plan on having hooked to the tv besides cable.

If I got an optical cable and hooked it from the optical out on the tv to the optical input on the audio reciever, could I get 5.1 from the TV and the PS3? I guess what I am asking is since the PS3 is hooked to the tv, will the tv automatically send the audio output to the reciever when I am using the PS3? I guess that is the only thing I would need to do right?

Thanks,
Joey

5.1? Probably not. A few TVs can pass a full 5.1 signal coming from external sources over the optical out but the vast majority do not, and I'm going to play the odds and say yours is probably one that doesn't. The optical can pass 5.1 from the internal digital tuners for HD broadcast, but from your PS3 it'll probably downmix it to stereo.

If you want full 5.1, best run the optical straight from the PS3 to the receiver. If you also need it from the TV, and the receiver doesn't have another optical input, you can buy an optical switch.

Cool thats all I needed to know. I couldn't remember if the PS3 had an optical output or not. That will be perfect though.

Thanks for the help,
Joey

Just a reminder that you will have to change the audio settings on the PS3 from HDMI to optical out.
