why all the tears over BD live?

I dont get it. I have been trying to get the floor model from my local BB. They want $240 for it and I dont want to pay over $200. It is in great shape and seems worth $200. I have been reading combo player threads recently and dont get it. I own two Hd-a1's, a Hd-30, and a Hd-xa2 as well as a Ps3, samsung 1400, and Sony Bdp-301. The PS3 is by far the best and is BD live. The other two have latest firmware and frankly suck. They take forever to load and dropout like crazy. I got them both cheap and dont expect Sony or Samsung to pay me money or buy them back because new technology has made them not as appealing. Why do owners of the Bh200 fell like LG owes them anything? The only thing LG is responsible for IMO is to provide usable firmware. Besides what the heck does Bd live add to the movie watching experience really?

Tears? Considering we're talking about opinions, that's a rather condescending and derisive tone to be wielding at those that disagree with you...or just happen to be in different circumstances than you. Particularly when you're jumping into a discussion that's been going on for weeks. Especially when you're balking at a BH200 for $240. Of course BD-Live doesn't matter to you. You haven't even purchased a BH200 yet. You have seven additional hi-def players, with at least one that's BD-Live capable. Not all of us have seven or eight hi-def players. Some of us already bought a BH200. Months ago. Even a year ago. For far more than $240. Consider, just for a second, that others aren't in the same situation as you, and you might understand why there's a variety of opinions.

BTW, LG hasn't released a firmware update for the BH200 in over six months. Guess that means LG has failed you too...

Anyway, my purchase was made soon after Toshiba dropped HD DVD support. I bought a BH200 with emphasis on getting a single player to play all content on all formats (HD DVD titles which we already owned, and BD titles). The BH200 is an excellent player and has the necessary components for BD-Live (it was even touted by LG as being BD-Live capable). Short a firmware update though, the BH200 not capable of playing BD-Live content. LG has announced a BD-Live update isn't coming. That means I'd be forced to get yet another player for BD-Live content...which totally defeats the purpose of one player to play them all. Consequently I'm frustrated with LG's decision (though there's a glimmer of hope...see below).

At the same time, I understand it's not a big deal for you. And that's fine. Not only because differing opinions are fine, but because it's what makes sense for your situation. If I was in the same boat, I probably wouldn't care about BD-Live support in the BH200. Point is, it's rather presumptuous to think we're all in the same boat.

As for BD-Live itself, here's an excerpt from a previous post of mine:

We're all going to have our own interests of course. Point is, the BD-Live capability means that studios can start adding all sorts of extras. No one will like all of that content..but there's bound to be something of interest for every movie fan. As mentioned above, studios want to highlight the advantages of BD over DVD. BD-Live is likely to see quite an emphasis going forward.

There's a chance LG has reconsidered and is working on a BH200 BD-Live update to be released in a couple months (samsungmaster has posted about a big update in a couple months or so...). Time will tell of course, but with samsungmaster's hints, I'd be all over a BH200 @ $240. Unfortunately, no opportunity for that around here though. Must be nice to look down your nose @ $240 for a BH200.

Not to mention the very assuming thread title implying everyone here is crying over BD-Live missing on the BH-200, when there are MANY of us with BD-UP5000s who may or may not be crying over the same feature.
No one that I know of is crying over BD-live....we're just getting a rebate that LG is more then happy to provide. Why would you cry over the player costing over $200.00 when you can buy it for $240.0 + taxes and get a $75.00 rebate which would bring the player under $200. I bought my player for $212.00 and with the $75.00 rebate...well you do the math. The LG BH-200 is a great player even if you paid $240.00 for it.

Personally I think it's overrated and more a case of people wanting something they don't have instead of actually finding is useful once they have it. That's just my opinion though.

I doubt I'll use it more than a handful of times. I barely watch extras any more. It's all about the movie.

My concern is not really about the BD-Live content. My concern is, going forward, discs that are mastered for a BD-Live player might not function properly on a non bd-live player. Blu-ray specs have been such a moving target since it was rushed out the door so I would prefer to have future proof player.

I am sure that you realize that the word "tears" is not to be taken literally. I just find it amusing that I like most of you have paid good money for bleeding edge technology that either fails or becomes rapidly outdated and I have never heard of a mass appeal to a manufacture to refund money. I think that it is admirable for LG to do so but it sets an odd precedent and does it really create a sense of consumer loyalty for all of the LG owners?
Is it so hard to have a discussion without being condescending? You did it again by terming the opposing viewpoint as "amusing"...

This isn't about bleeding edge becoming outdated. Nor did I ever see a mass appeal for a monetary refund from LG. Rather it was all about getting LG to release the BD-Live update.

As for consumer loyalty, there's no doubt a refusal to release a BD-Live update would alienate some/many BH200 buyers (myself included). On the other hand, does the $75 cheque buy loyalty? Can't hurt. I know I'd appreciate it... Unfortunately it's not available outside the US. (edit: At the time, I said the pay-off was an insult. I still feel that way--one player to play them all is the only workable solution. That was the purpose behind my purchase of the BH200, and the cheque does nothing to solve that).

Anyway, since you brought up precedent, can you name another manufacturer that touted a player as BD-Live capable...only to announce they wouldn't release a BD-Live update? Imagine the backlash if Sony hadn't updated the PS3 to Profile 2.0. Now that's comparing apples to apples.

My first generation Pioneer DV-500 DVD player from 1996 has yet to meet a dvd I can't play. i consider that future proof. Thats all I want out of a Blu-ray player.

Edit: Whoops 1997 ! lol. I couldn't find the receipt

Greetings

Interesting since the DVD format rolled out in early 1997.

My first DVD player just died a few months ago. Bought it early on--97, I think. It got alot of use too--especially near the end. Did it get $400 worth of use? (Which is what I payed for it.) Probably.

Consider yourself lucky

My first gen $700.00 Toshiba DVD player failed to play more and more DVD's as time progressed. I recall the last straw before I replaced it was the 2001 remake of "Planet of the Apes" where it refused to play the chapters in the correct order.

Not sure Planet of the Apes works as well "Memento" style.

Mine was a Panasonic. Not sure if that says anything about corporate reliability overall, but there you go.
