Receiver recommendations for AV123 Rocket Subsystem: Newbie Alert!

Guys,

I need recommendations for a fairly decent receiver for a rocket system I ordered recently (not received yet though).

AV123 Rocket RS850s + Rocket RS450s + Rocket RSC200 + MFW-15

I want to spend less than $700 for the receiver. Main requirement is watching movies (with PS3) and songs (MP3 streaming over from my iMac to PS3).

TIA

What sources will be hooked up, and what TV do you have?

So you don't need a lot of HDMI then

How about a Denon AVR-988 from Amazon or a Marantz SR5002 from accessories4less?

How do you rate Onkyo 806 for this setup?

I have the 805 and it has run without a single issue. I have had Pioneer, Yamaha and Denon receivers, I prefer the Onkyo. It is best to try to demo as many as possible. All good choices mentioned but hearing for yourself and hands on to feel how they operate is the best way to go IMO. I had Rocket 750s and the 200 center great speakers for sure. Good luck!

ok, here comes a no-brainer for you guys (I sure am clueless) :-(

If I connect multiple HDMI, component, and composite devices with these receivers, only one HDMI (with appropriate up scaling) connection will be required to my TV, right?

TIA

As long as the receiver has HDMI upcoversion, yes. Some receivers (many? most?) won't convert 1080p to HDMI, but that seems to be mainly a concern for users of older XBox 360s.

I know it's best to use an amp, but what about a Yamaha RX-V663 pushing a set of Rockets? Any huge negatives? Thanks!

No negatives unless the setup doesn't go loud enough for you. You only should get an external amp. if you want more power.
