Sony vs. Samsung LCD Flat Panel

I want to purchase the Samsung LN52A630 or LN52A550, but my friend wants me to get a Sony because it's "better" and I will be sorry for getting a Samsung.

The reason why I opted for a Samsung was because of word of mouth, internet reviews, etc. What Sony model is comparable to the Samsung for around the same price? I will switch if it's a better value.

Just a suggestion: you may want to look at the 50 threads and tens of thousands of comments that compare various Samsung and Sony LCDs so that you get a feel for the differences in features, benefits, quality and performance and other people's opinions.

That's the thing I have. My head is spinning, I want to make a decision already because I will never get a tv if I research forever. I just want a few people to back me up on the Samsung or oppose my decision.

For knowledgeable people it is not that simple Dr Easy. For example, do you know that one of the differences between the Samsung/Sony displays is glossy/nonglossy surface? Which one is best then depends on the light distribution in your viewing space.

Lots of light in the room.

Thinking about this model as a comparison:

KDL52W4100

I think either Sammy would be better than Sony's W series. The new Sam panels are VERY good. Just MHO.

Then you should compare 52w4100 vs. 52a630. Their screen are semi-matte. IMO, Samsung has more pop to the PQ and Sony has natural color so it comes down to what you like. In the end, I bought 52w4100.

Sammy ln52a650 offers huge performance per dollar. Stores are pushing 630s because there is more profit margin with them. 650s can be had for a real bargain.

I have a samsung 46a650 and have absolutely no complaints. This includes the light reflection that some mention. Picture quality is fantastic. No buyer's remorse at all. Well, maybe that I could have gotten the 52"

My cousin has a Sony 46" LCD and I have a Samsung 32". Both have good picture, but the Samsung is better in terms of colors and black levels.

i think the worse thing u can do is read these forums--everyone has their own opinion and im sure if u asked 10 of the so called experts u would get so many diff answers. just go with what u want and can afford. i went thru the same thing--reading post after post and at the end of the day i ended up getting the sony 46xbr5-- i love it but the next person might not like it.

Agreed. The OP should just go to the store and do a side-by-side comparison. Then choose which you like best. Each person has their preference.

The problem with that is they are not all calibrated the same.

As the proud owner of a Samsung 46A650, I'd vote for the 52A650 or 52A630. Both should do very nicely. Of course, there's nothing wrong with the Sony 52W4100, but I think the Samsungs are marginally better this year. I also agree that only you can make the ultimate decision. Your money, your choice.

I say get a Samsung.

I owned a Samsung til i broke it and i loved it. My brother now owns the Samsung 32 inch 650 and i love it. My dad owns the 40 inch XBR4 and the picture is awful.

As someone mentioned earlier though, dont take our opinions as fact. Buy the tv you want and if youre not happy, return it.

WHen I bought my 46" 650 a couple months ago, the Sonys were a lot more expensive, making it an easy call. The W4100 was maybe $200 more, the Z4100 $500 more. Now the Z4100 is as cheap as the 650, making it a much tougher decision.

I'd take a 650 over a W4100, but vs the Z4100 at the same price, it's a tossup. Pick whichever looks better.

Just my 2 cents.

You can't go wrong with either unit. It's a matter of physically looking at them both and seeing which one "stands" out more to your viewing.

I've previously had the Samsung LN-55A950 and thought the PQ was just amazing. Had to send it back though because of a few minor issues.

Looked at the Sony KDL-55XBR8 and after seeing this, the PQ IMO was better than the Samsung.

Again you can't go wrong with either one. Maybe check out what kind of warranty each one offers that might be another deciding factor?

^^^^ There is a rumour going around that if your neighbor is home you watch blurays on his PRO151FD though and not your own set!!!

Funny you mentioned this cause i was thinking of picking up a PRO-151FD. So i can have the best of both worlds. And i can prolly get it for around four-ish.

Vizio over Samsung and Sony any day.

Lol yah right, huh? So before you listen to anyone's opinions, take a look for yourself.
I did it and I was glad, because I preferred the other set over the one that most people recommended me.

This is pretty much what I was going to say. Between those 2 brands, it would seem to be hyperbole to suggest someone would greatly miss out on "something". Either one you get, you can be assured of jumping into the pool of best of the best for LCD's on the market. You could do far worse with other brands/models, compared to Sony and Samsung and the state of their current technologies.

It all amounts to the picture quality, Everyone has there own taste, You just have to see them for yourself and decide which one to go with.

One person may like the Sony cause of one thing, The other might like the Samsung for another.
