This track plays fine on some, but not all, other Blu-ray players.
Other tracks on the disc, dts-HD Master Audio, DOLBY TRUEHD, DOLBY Digital, and 2.0 LPCM 24 BIT/192 kHz play fine on the Mag.

The Magnavox NB500MG9, Sylvania NB500SL9 & Insignia NS-BRDVD are pretty much the same player made by Funai correct ?


You should add a column of "Play" then indicate if the title works with YES or NO.
This thread will become valuable to those who own the first Gen Funai BD players.
Thanks for creating it.

If there's enough NO in the "Play" column, it could help push Funai to release a FW update. Also, the list could be used to submit to www.blufocus.com and perhaps than can forward the data to Funai as well since Funai Customer Service appears to be non-existent at this stage.

Not sure. It might be hidden like the Panasonics but I couldn't locate any remote key strokes that would display it.

On the Philips BD player built by Funai, there's a Product Info screen that displays the FW version but no such menu item exists for these 3 players.

Don't forget the other issues.
From user ronjones on blu-ray.com:

1. There is a minor issue when playing the BD releases of the Jack Ryan movies (The Hunt for Red October, Patriot Games , Clear and Present Danger, and The Sum of All Fears) in that when Stop is pressed it takes approx. 15 to 20 seconds before playback actually stops.

2. There is a significant audio issue with a few BD titles that have Dolby TrueHD audio tracks (i.e., Batman Begins and Beowulf: Director's Cut) in that the Dolby TrueHD audio track is not detected and only the standard Dolby Digital 5.1 audio track is provided via the HDMI bitstream output.

3. There are reports that the HBO BD release of "Rome" has issues with the subtitles randomly being displayed even when when the subtitles option is turned off in the player.

4. There are reports of the BD title "Wanted" causing the player to lockup (requiring an unplug from power to reset).


For the record I have Magnavox NB500MG9, and was the one who reported the first item on this list re: Jack Ryan films.

Added the other titles, except Wanted, as Wanted seemed to work fine for other people.

Perhaps it's a disc pressing issue, and some bad copies are gumming up the player.

I get garbled audio in The Dark Knight.

Note though that I also get the same garbled audio with my Sony BDP-S350 on a different receiver, so this may be not be the player's fault.

The garbled audio is not the players fault. I have tried this disk and it plays fine. Bee-Movie will not play the Dolby True HD track on the Mag.

Go to that exact 11'18" spot and check it out again. The distortion is small enough that many people may not notice it.

Note though it may not be the Funai's fault (since my Sony S350 gives the same results). I wonder if it's inherent in the authored audio, or could be a problem with the transcoding of it to DD5.1, since I'm using SPDIF. The result is the same whether I use the default DD track or if I use the TrueHD track.

I, too, am using SPDIF out. But I played back that same spot three or four times oin Dark Knight , and still I didn't detect any distortion.

Hmmm... I wonder if it could how the receiver interacts with the signal. I notice it both with my two different receivers (with the two different players), but FWIW both of my receivers are Sonys.

The Insignia NS-2BRDVD is not a Funai player. It is made by Desay, and is known to have several disc incompatibilities.

Space Chimps is a Fox movie, apparently with the latest BD+ DRM.

There may be a problem with AN AMERICAN CAROL. Plays the opening trailers, but the menu can't be accessed. It tries to load, thengoes to STOP. New disc from Netflix...have to see if a replacement disc suffers from the same issue.

3. There are reports that the HBO BD release of "Rome" has issues with the subtitles randomly being displayed even when when the subtitles option is turned off in the player.

Guess I started that one. To clarify . . . the problem occurred with a standard def DVD on the Sylvania player . . . not a BD at all. The subtitles are not only displayed whether you want them or not, they will not stay turned off after you turn them off and are distorted with a yellowish matte covering about 1/3 of the screen. The offending discs played fine in my non blu-ray machine.

Ratatouille plays, but freezes at the 58 second mark. Anyone else have this problem?

OK. I took out the Rome entry, since it's not a BR title.

Added 27 Dresses. Plays fine. Well, the GF's watching it. I'm busy surfing AVS.

I have not tried Ratatouille. It would really suck if such a big title didn't work. My guess is that it is the Netflix effect... hopefully.
