Thank you! Got that to work; is it possible to get our DirecTV remote to operate the Blu-ray player? I managed to get it to operate the tv (off/on). Sorry for such elementary questions, but we are so not techno...
Yes, I went into the remote setup option in the DirecTV menu and set it for the Sharp DVD player and it works it just fine. I use the AV1 switch to operate the BD player.

on the HD-DVR select the following options:
Menu
Parental, Fav's & Setup
System Setup
Remote
Program Remote
AV1 (or AV2 depending on what you want to use)
DVD
Sharp
then follow the on screen directions, I believe the first code worked for me.

Then you keep the remote on AV1 to work the Blu-Ray Player and the "PWR" button to power the unit on/off.

Thank you very much!!

We're very pleased with this player. So far have watched Wall-E, Iron Man, James Bond and Forgetting Sarah Marshall BDs and all played very well.

The sound on one of them (sorry, forget which - maybe Iron Man) wasn't as great, but I think that has to do with the disc and not the player. The Bond movie slowed & skipped a few times, but not awful, and I'm sure that is because they were rentals.

And, just finished watching Independence Day (an older DVD we own) and it played wonderfully.

Sorry, i dont mean to be rude or anything, but are you guys sure that WALL-E is working? Ive tried 3 different copies so far and none want to work. Batman Dark Knight, IronMan, and a bunch of older BR movies are working just fine, but WALL-E just doesnt want to load past a certain point. Everytime it pauses/freezes at the 2:55 mark in the "Coming to BLuRay" section. I emailed the CDN Sharp customer service and waiting for a response. I'll post back when/if i hear back from them.

Other than WALL-E not working, the player is solid. Visual quality is outstanding and load times are ok. Not super slow of what ive seen from other players, but quick enough to not annoy me.

I'm absolutely sure I watched WALL-E on my player - it's the only BD I own... and it played flawlessly....including all the extras.... my dreams aren't that vivid...

Wall-E (Netflix rental) played fine on my player. The only BD so far that I couldn't get to work ( 2 copies) was X-files. I have the Nov. software update on my player.
I bought the player at the end of dec and it already had the latest firmware on it. I emailed the CDN customer service which they replied to all of my questions

Quote:

Dear MY NAME,

This is often caused by some microscopic flaws on the disks themselves if two people have copies of the same movie and the same player, but only one can play the movie. We recommend trying to play a different copy of the movies on Blu-ray as this will better determine if the problem is just with the disk or the player.

While we are working diligently on the next firmware update, unfortunately, I do not yet have an ETA for when it will be available.

We appreciate the opportunity to provide you with this information. If you need additional information please include all information from prior e-mail messages and replies.

I asked them specific questions and im ok with the response. I mean, its not no wish wash generic auto reply answer. It also came a day later so im happy with the response time as well. Now if only i can watch my movie...

So ill take the disk back again, 4th time, but to a different location this time. Maybe they got a bad batch of disks?!?!? If thats the case, then the distributors have to clean up their act. DVD's DISK...etc have been around for such a long time there shouldnt be any issues in developing these. They need to tighten up on the quality control.

Question, is there a site that outlines or tracks by people posting of defective rates on specific movies? I know its hard to track along with it completely accurate, but im just wondering if there's something like that kicking around?

Thanks for everyones replies. Ill report back when i try my new disk tomorrow.

Wall-E was one of the first movies I bought and It played without any problems. I'll check it again tonight to see what is happening at that point on the disc.

Focal Point, I checked the point in Wall-E where you said you had a problem. At 2:55 my player is very near the end of the Disney previews. I never viewed them before because I always skip them (Disney is the worst with previews). No changes happen in the signal at that point to cause a problem with the player. About 5 seconds later the screen goes blank to load the actual movie and menus. This lasts a little over 40 seconds with one of those loading icons showing up about half way through the load time. The movie comes up an plays without a hitch. I hope this information helps. Any chance there is another version of Wall-E where the main disc is different? Mine is a 2 disc set.

So far my 21U has been fine, but the one thing I miss that I had on my old DVD player & my TIVO is a one-button function that backs the movie up about 10 seconds. So far all I've found is pressing rewind to 3X, wait about a second, then press Play. Have I missed something in the manual, or isn't there any better way to do it?
TIA

Thanks for checking... my version is the 2 disk set where the 2nd disk is bonus material i believe. I havent checked that yet to be honest, just the main disk. When it freezes on me i have left it for a few hrs to which nothing still happens. Im going to try a replacement one more time and see what happens. If it doesnt work, so be it. Ill see if i can exchange it for something else. If i come across another disk then i may do something with the player. I just dont want the continuing hassles along with me not feeling confident in it. I hate the feeling of "ohhhh should i buy this, i hope it works" as i sit there thinking about purchasing future movies. Sad, i really want this to work, i have a sharp TV and i love it and im just one of those types of peoples who like to have all hardware from the same company.

Thanks for looking into it tho, greatly appreciated.

Pomplun, i dont think it has that feature. Just regular REW along with chapter skips. Unless the chapter skips have configurable time skips?

My Aquos BD-HP21U came as a $150 add on (1/2 price with the 46" Aquos TV) I have noticed a lot of time it is super slow. Wal-e, Ironman, Legend, Batman Dark Knight, Mummy, all played without a problem other than the response from the player is SLOW (Guess I am lucky from what I read here). I tried to put a new USB drive in it today to update the firmware with no luck. The drive is 8G Verbatim. With the USB drive in it just keeps resetting and starting over. I thought I could burn the file to a CD-R. What a waste of time! It would not read the disk & there is no option to update the firm ware from anything but USB. The rep at the best box store said to burn it to a DVD... Guess again. But they will fix it for 29.00 if you use the geek squad. What a joke. This all started because of the X-Files movie. It would not play the first time from Blockbuster Mail Rental, returned it for a new disk, 2nd disk did not seem to work so now after all this today I gave up. Left the disk in and went in to start dinner in the kitchen and 25 min later I hear the classic X-files music and it is ready to play. My 8 Gig USB drive still will not work so I will have to look for a smaller one & or different brand I guess. I am not 100% satisfied with this unit. I have used it for 1 month now. I want all the features like BD live and some speed. In another post a person said here to add USB memory I will buy a smaller one and try again. If it will speed things up that would be great. I do have to give a 10 to the picture quality (Using the overpriced box store brand 89.00 HDMI cable) has been fantastic on the disks that do play.
The Sharp actually isn't a slow player. Aside from a few problem discs, of which x-files is one of them.

You need to properly format the USB drive and make sure the firmware is the only thing on it. There is an option to have the Sharp format the drive for you.

Finally, next time do a bit of research before you buy. Since you are not satisfied that you don't have a BD live capable player. The sharp was never marketed or claimed to be a profile 2.0 player.

Everytime I put the drive in the player keeps reboting. I thought it was I will try formatting on my pc with only the that. Today was much better at the box store though. they had a sale last week where if you buy the tv you get the player for free. So today they refunded the money back to the credit card for the player. So a free player I can deal with the update problem.

FWIW, We bought a 2GB SanDisk Cruzer Micro USB and plugged it into our player. It seems to play just a tad faster than before, so I'm going to just leave it there.... Our player was delivered with the latest firmware...

And so far so good, every BD we've rented have played wonderfully....

After 2 copies I never got X-files to play, Supposedly there will be a firmware update but it's been weeks now since I spoke to Sharp tech support and still nothing.

Just an update, i traded in my WALL-E for another copy and ITS FINALL ALIVE... Holy geeze is this movie brilliant, visual quality i mean.

Thanks for everyone's input, sad really, when one has to go through so many defective copies of a single movie. Oh well, not Sharps problem anyhoo... i just hope future movie titles will go through better QA.

Again, thanks!!!

PS - as for a new firmware, the tech that ive been speaking with had no ETA on their release, but he did confirm that one is in the works.

Copy of a response I received last week following my letter to the President of SharpUSA:
Dear Mr. Godfrey,

I wanted to follow up with you on your case file.

I have been working with our technical department on getting additional information on the firmware for fixing your Blu-Ray issue.

Unfortunately I'm still working with them to try to find out a resolution as soon as more information becomes available I will inform you.

Thanks so much and I do apologize for the delay.

I replied that they do not seem to understand that their player is being bad-mouthed all over the net for not playing 'Narnia - Prince Caspian'.

I am very happy you finally got a good copy. Must be frustrating not knowing if it is the player or the BD.

When is soon anyway? I have seen this from other posts after talking to sharp. Well after calling sharp about all the movies that I can't play (with the newest firmware & a new player) I was told that they are aware of the problems. The support person said they are working on a new fix to be released soon. I gave upon the x files after 4 copies; I now have Journey to the center of the earth that will not play. I added a 2 Gig thumb drive hoping for some extras, speed, or better results. So far I have not noticed any difference. I am frustrated with this. I am glad mine was free with the TV. I keep getting movies from blockbuster by mail but have not got one to play in 2 weeks now. The firmware upgrade is easy as long as you use a drive that is from 256 mb to 2 gig max. That was my problem in the earlier post I was trying to use an 8 gig (it was on sale). I will post an email update if I hear anything back from Sharp. So I have this right at the moment it is Narnia, xfiles, and journey to center of earth that will not play. Does anyone have any others that I have not listed here? I want to list them all in the trouble ticket they started for me.

The only movie that wouldn't work for me so far is X-files. Journey to Center of Earth played fine. Not interested in Narnia. I have a 4gig flash drive which worked fine to put Nov. software update on player and which I leave on there after clearing it.

Just received my 21U yesterday from B&H. So far no problems at all except slow load times (like all the BR players). Goes great with my Aquos tv. Was waiting for the Oppo BR to be released, but it wont be region free like my Oppo 9870H. so I decideed to get the sharp and sister it with my Oppo 980H which I use for my UK dvd titles.

I was able to play Journey to the Center of the Earth without any problems --(although at the time I did not realize that WB does not put menus on their discs and I was trying to get the 3D version) -- But the movie played without a hitch and I did not have a flash drive in the player at the time. Wall*E also played without any problems.

I did have an issue with some Blu Ray discs after the kids watched a standard DVD, and I had to unplug it. When I plugged the player back in and restarted, it worked fine.

Just an FYI - Latest software update released today:

http://www.sharpusa.com/products/Typ...86,229,00.html

Was able to update my player using a 4GB Sandisk Cruzer Gator
post #85 of 224
I downloaded and installed the update and Narnia, Prince Caspian now plays. Yahoo. Are there other improvements with this software version?

I was able to download and install the previous firmware update without any problems, However, when I download this current update, it sends an .rvp file, not a .zip file. When I try to open it, a window opens that says an .rvp file is a scanner file that windows cannot open. Has this file somehow been corrupted by Sharp, or is there something else I can do?

I downloaded it onto a sandisk cruzer 2 GB memory stick and it downloaded it as a .zip file and I had to extract the files. I don't beleive it is a sharp issue.

Redgtconv, The .RVP is typically the firmware file extension. They put it in a .zip file to compress it and keep it from flagging anti-virus programs, etc. All you have to do is copy/extract that .RVP file onto your USB drive and then follow the instructions they provideto update the player.

I've seen some people say that their player will stick on the "Update Successful" screen at the end. But all they needed to do was turn the player off, and then on again to complete the update.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars does not work, even after the firmware update. How ridiculous is this?
