They aren't enabling firmware updates to get firmware updates. They are doing it to take advantage of a side effect of enabling updates, and that is the automatic reboot that happens at the time of day that you specify. The theory is that if you reboot the DVR every day when the WUSA time stamps are correct, the clock will stay correct. The reboot causes the DVR clock to immediately synchronize with the TVGOS timestamps.
