I should probably check if it is always the same stations that show an erratic behaviour.
Should I undertand that users who use a 4X3 sert always get an image with the proper size?
The following is common to all HDTV tuners I have experience with, internal to HDTVs and external DVRs, satellite tuners and external cable boxes. Everything below is based on setting your DVR/HDTV tuner output for a 4x3 TV.
If the broadcast channel is SD (and not HD), the video being broadcast is SD 4x3 and shoulfd fill the screen of the 4x3 TV.
If the broadcast channel is HD...
...HD programs will fill the letterbox area of your 4x3 TV (i.e., black bars above and below the 16x9 picture);
...SD programs will be 4x3 within the letterbox area, thus having black bars on all 4 sides, sometimes described as a postage stamp view. The reason for this is the actual video being broadcast already contains the left and right bars, and the 4x3 TV still adds the top and bottom bars as it does for any HDTV reception.
I suspect the differences you are seeing coincide with SD vs. HD broadcast channels.
