The Official AVS Dish DTVPal DVR Topic! - Page 528

Sorry if this issue has been discussed already.....
I read somewhere that TVGOS can be retrieved again by using the internet connection on the DTVpal DVR.
Supposedly, it still exists but only via the internet.
Is this true and accurate?
Does it actually work? Is it reliable (or possibly better that the OTA version)?
Has anyone had any experience with this option?

Thank you in advance for any related comments (or perhaps links to previous threads or info. on this)!

Nope from what I was told in the past. It's only for updating DVR's firmware. Where read that from?

I don't know where you read that information, but it is not true. The DTVPal cannot retrieve TVGOS from the internet.

I read this information here.....

http://www.spiffspace.com/forum/index.php?topic=336.0

(it's mentioned in several posts on this forum but specifically check the first post)

I'm assuming that there is no customer service for the DTVpal DVR (and therefore no way to check this out with the manufacturer).....or perhaps there is a way to contact them?

Is it worth testing?

It doesn't say EchoStar/Dish's DTV Pal DVR. You can try it for us. I am sure it won't work. That network jack is only for updating firmwares. wink.gif

Here's the actual quote (which originated from a Sony technician):

"The TV Guide On Screen system is a 3rd party service currently provided by the Rovi Corporation.

Currently the data for the Guide is sent by way of over-the-air and cable broadcast transmissions, as well as by way of Internet connection to compatible devices.

Starting on NOVEMBER 1, 2012 the Rovi Corporation will start discontinuing the broadcast transmission of data from all US locations and will complete that process by APRIL 1, 2013.

Once the broadcast transmission ends in a location, the TV Guide On Screen service WILL ONLY BE AVAILABLE to devices that are INTERNET UPDATE CAPABLE, and are connected to an active network connection."

Half true. TVGoS still exists but only via the Internet, so that part is true. However, the Pal DVR firmware was never programmed to retrieve TVGoS via the Internet connection.
Perhaps "INTERNET UPDATE CAPABLE" mean: if our TR-50 (as capable) will get the update (new FW) what would fetch [somehow] guide data from Internet.
Assuming that this is true.....

Would there be any way to update the firmware so it would be compatible with the TVGOS service?
......or is this just wishful thinking?

Ask Dish/Echostar. :P

In theory, yes. In practice, wishful thinking. The Pal DVRs are no longer manufactured, so there's no reason for either brand (they were sold under both the Dish and Channel Master brands) to order an update from the manufacturer (Echostar).

We've discussed various alternatives at length on this thread, but none seem particularly promising. Probably the best bet is to nag your local station engineers to broadcast more guide info via PSIP. Some stations might be willing to accommodate such requests; unfortunately some won't but you never know until you ask.

I couldn't care less if stations have > 12 hours of PSIP, because the only thing I need PSIP for is to have named files, which is a convenience I could also technically live without. I guess I don't spend enough time watching TV to care about guides, because the only time I channel surf to see what's on is if I have the flu and am too sick to do anything else. tongue.gif

I won't bother recording late-night talk shows unless they have a hot chick as a guest. So I really miss knowing a week in advance.

Use the Internet: http://www.interbridge.com/lineups.html ... Then, manually record! wink.gif

Also I don't believe that you can even update the firmware today by connecting the DTVPal DVR to an active internet connection via the Ethernet port. AFAIK Dish no longer has that firmware update site active and the ONLY way to update a DTVPal DVR (assuming you have one of the older firmware versions F201, F202, F206 or F207 that needs to be updated to the most current version F208) is to load the update on a USB flash drive and plug that into the DTVPal DVR's USB port.

I am curious. What's the IP address/domain of that former update server? I don't have a network setup to sniff it.

Try this http://tr50.dishaccess.tv/tr50/ smile.gif or "Contact DISH on 1.888.667.0633 to subscribe". Taken from FW.

And something promising (for slprp1) from FW:

Internet Connection
Do you want to use your ^d's internet connection to receive ^p data?
Yes (recommended)
^p is testing your internet connection. This can take a few moments.
Disable collecting data via the internet
connect to data server
get current time
download listings data
next download
The ^p system obtains channel and program information using your internet connection kjk when completed, the LISTINGS grid will display
NOTE: ^p was unable to obtain listings data through your internet connection.
Please select which service you would like your ^pkek to support:
^p is attempting to receive program information.
If you have questions, please contact customer support.
^p has not received program information.
Information may not be available with some cable boxes or satellite receivers, and in some locations.
Please contact customer support for additional information
Searching for ^p program information has been disabled on this unit. To restart, select Search Again below.
The ^p system obtains channel and program information when your unit is turned off kjk once initial setup is complete, this section will display the time for the next information update

Yeah, if we could hack our DVR's firmware to do that. But then it would be shot down even someone found a way. :P

At least there was a provision to get TVGOS via Internet, perhaps from specialized dish server ?

Who knows. How are you viewing this? With a hex editor in the downloaded firmware file?
Sorta.
Hmm.... An in-home DNS & Web server could hijack http://tr50.dishaccess.tv/tr50/ within one's home network. Then we could supply the Pal with our own info. But we'd still have to know what info to supply and how to format it confused.gif

I'm getting no info for shows that start 4 AM CST Saturday or later, though the TV Guide logo is still there on the guide pages.  Perhaps the plug's been pulled in Chicago again, maybe for good.

My clock is now off about a minute, and I unplugged the unit to do a reset (the remote control method hardly ever works for me). That got the time to be changeable, but the weird thing is that I have to set the time to be 4 minutes fast in order to get accurate time. As an example, if I want the time to be 12:40, I have to set the clock to 12:44 - it will then show 12:40 after selecting "done". Does this happen to anyone else?

EDIT: It's been fine here from WKRC since about Dec 30 up until I have lost TVGoS listings past Tue 1/29 4am ...If I recall correctly I do think I deleted the WKRC channels and rescanned it (add channel) when I noticed via TSreader they had straightened things out with their transport stream(in addition to reinputing a Cincy DMA zip code because I had temporarily set it to 00000 as noted in Those Cincy thread posts)

.... Anyway, If you mess with it+get it working, please let me know if you have any TVGoS data past Tue 1/29 at 4am, thanks!

See attached pics and the posts in Cincinnati thread I provided links to in my last post ....

Wish I had considered the lose of TVGOS as just a glitch instead of assuming it was gone.

I did a factory defaults reset last night at mid-night. As of 2:30 this afternoon I have TVGOS time but no logo or program info. Since this is the 29th and you don't have anything past 4am I assume they stopped sending data about a week ago but if I get anything I will let you know.
