I'm guessing it computes the PSIP average when it scans channels to update the guide. I think it has to be in standby to do this.
I guess I'll be doing a little experimenting and comparing. The 1:15 fast 'Pal #1 is the original I've had a few years. My second 'Pal #2 I got last October, and when I double-rebooted it today, it came up with a time within seconds of real time. So I have two 'Pals that are acting differently doing the same double reboot. Maybe a factory reset is needed?
btw When doing the first reboot of 'Pal #2 I canceled the channel and guide data scan to expedite things and wanted to see what would happen too, second reboot I let it finish the full scan, and it worked fine coming up with an accurate time. I had wondered if it was necessary to let it complete a full scan on the first reboot.
i just did an experiment which indicates the Pal can use tuner 2 to update the guide.
I brought up the guide right after 10 PM. At this point, channels 4 and 8 only went out to 7 AM. I then exited the guide. The DVR was on channel 5, so I tuned to channel 4 and brought up the guide again. This time, channel 4 went out to 10
AM but channel 8 still only went out to 7 AM.
Then I scrolled forward and backward in the guide. When I returned to Friday morning, channel 8 had been updated and went out to 10 AM as well.
But how could I know which tuner the Pal used to update channel 8? I exited the guide again and the DVR was still on channel 4; so I hit "skip back" several times until I reached the same scene I'd seen when I first tuned to channel 4. This confirmed tuner 1 had been receiving, and recording, channel 4 during the entire time I'd been checking the guide.
Therefore, it must have used tuner 2 to update channel 8. Q.E.D.
That's good news: it means the Pal can keep the guide updated (and probably the clock too) even if you generally keep the DVR on! It doesn't need to be in standby, contrary to my earlier guess.
Next question to investigate: can it update the guide via tuner 1 also? I'll work on that one tomorrow evening.
