I had tried it both ways, but sometime after disconnecting the power the second time (I have not reconnected it yet) I had the thought that that once there (either by pressing the DVR key or by going through the menus) if I pressed 1 instead of Select to go into My Recordings, the result might be different.

If you had that four-second opportunity, then it was not the exact same thing.
What I did was go into the HDD diagnostic Reformat the disk.
P Smith answered me in email and suggested a reformatting as well. I've not yet tried it but intend to if just staying unplugged a long while doesn't clear it up.

I haven't yet read your PM, but I did read your email and you suggested it there too. Here's my answer: I'd be somewhat let down to lose the recordings, but it beats losing the DVR, so as I just said in response to JMRaker0, if the long time unplugged doesn't fix it, and pressing 1 instead of Select doesn't get around it, the next thing I'll try is a reformat.
Thanks to all three of you.
