That is the answer I was looking for. Let's say you have a 50% full PAL DVR drive.

If you take it out and put it back into the pal. Does it format?

Opening this box is not for the squeamish.

I have a question that I been meaning to ask and always forgot to ask.

Can the PAL DVR be put on a table Vertically? Will that hurt the HardDrive in anyway? Or does it have to be put on a table horizontally?

I would secure it so it would not fall.

Where I want to put it. Might not have enough space.

Any thoughts on this matter?

Thanks in advance.

HDDs have heads on top and bottom of platters so one is always "upside down." Sideways should be a piece of cake?
Be sure to raise it up so it gets good ventilation

Does anyone who has the PAL DVR know if you can put the DVR Vertically on the table or has to be horizontally?

I appreciate the answer you gave, but that is generally speaking. I want to make sure the PAL DVR wont be harmed in any way in the vertical position

Remember that this has air vents on the top and both sides, putting it on its side will block one of those vents. Heat may or may not be an issue. I would put it on it's side with the top of the unit vents facing up. (when you look at it you'll understand what I'm saying)

Fan is pushing outside air into the DVR, so when it will stand on its side ( no problem for the drive !) be sure top side look up with the fan.

After looking at this picture I do not understand how it can be on its side without one side being blocked? Could you be more detailed?

This has been successful for me and a few other people that asked me for suggestions to
help them recover their TV Guide updating and/or previously deleted channels.

I call this a 'System Manual Reset':

>> Rescan for channels, Time, etc. by going to the following:

Press the 'Menu' button. Select - Setup (3), System Setup (2), Installation (1), Setup Wizard (1),
press the 'Select' button. Note that even with Cancel highlighted in the Setup Wizard, pressing
'Select' will start the process. If you want to Cancel, you must press the 'Cancel' button.

This is much easier than doing a Factory Reset, because all of your Menu preferences you previously
made will be retained. Although YOU WILL HAVE TO re-enter your Program Recording Schedule (if you currently have one) in the Program Guide, but this is easy to do, just make some notes about it before performing the reset.

Please let us know if this works for you. I'm sure others will be interested in your results.

Good information. The only fix I had seen posted previously for this was doing the Factory Defaults. So it isn't the reset that actually gets this working again, but something in the setup wizard. Since everything the setup wizard does, can be done separately, it should be possible to find the one specific thing that needs to be done to get it going again. Then you won't have to go through the whole setup wizard, and lose all your timers.

I said that "one side will be blocked." However, on the top, the holes on the left are not open to the unit, the ones on the right are open to the unit. So in this picture, I'd put the left side down.

Ok so let me see if I am now understanding.

The left vent holes do not let any air into the unit? They are closed? So putting this down on its left side will not make a difference since the holes do not go all the way through?

Or is this just the holes on the TOP of the unit and not the sides?

Am I understanding correctly?

BTW thank you for your time.

If you put the left side down (which is the side that must be down) you will need to set the front and back edges on something so that you do not block the air flow. (the fan blows in from the left)

Put it on an appropriately sized wire cooling rack then it won't matter which side is down. Ask your wife (if she bakes).

That is correct.
A while back I starting hearing the cooling fan in mine running faster (and louder).
I vacuumed the dust from the left side vents and all went back to normal.

The majority of the heat is vented through the holes in the top right rear holes. So it should be facing up. The fan is on the left side holes. Look in side you can see it spinning. Adequate space should be provided under the fan side so it can draw air in. You want to keep this thing as cool as possible!

So your saying Vertically is not recommended?

What if you used a wire rack or used some sort of stick on window padding that would keep the unit with air flow?
I think what everybody's saying is, the vertical position won't hurt the box as long as its mounted in such a way as to assure unblocked air flow.
And I think we all have devoted enough time to this. He sounds like he wants us to give him a warranty that nothing can go wrong.

So you would think that since the left side has the fan that putting it on its right side is a better idea?

I just not sure if my aunt has enough room on that TV table. I am guessing that putting it on the top of the TV would be a mistake if heat is a concern.

Sigh.

If it was for me I would not care. I would deal with what was needed.

See I am doing a favor here.

No, the fan blows in and heat naturally rises so if you put the left side up the fan would be blowing against the natural airflow.
