I don't need a bulb right now but I will eventually. Where is the best place to buy replacement bulbs for the 6500? BTW, speaking of lamps, I had a new (probably refurbished) replacement projector for my original which was still in warranty. The HDMI went out on it so they sent me another that looked brand new but I can't imagine them doing that. Anyway, the lamp timer showed zero (0) hours when I first turned it on. Does anyone know for sure if they put new bulbs in the ones they send out (assuming they are in fact, refurbished models)?

I noticed when I first used the replacement unit, that the lamp would overheat and the projector would shut down to protect itself. This was after only an hour of viewing. I checked the filter and all was well so I think the reason some of these lamps burn out prematurely might be that they are not cooled enough. Most will not shut down like mine did as they may be on the edge of the temp. scale. I did not want to send this unit back because the picture and everything else was perfect so I just increased the fan speed to high altitude and it has never shut down since. I think if I were to get another I would place it in high altitude setting even if I did not need it just to be sure the fan was moving fast enough to cool this thing down.

Sounds like there are several problems like this throughout the thread....but I just noticed a nice pinkish strip on the bottom inch or 2 of my image. I think I have about 1000 hours on the projector.

Is there any chance that a new bulb might remedy this issue? Or am I just screwed? 2-year warranty expired in March. Nice timing, huh?

I don't think a new bulb will fix your problem. Epson's Support is very good though and if you are nice they may hook you up even though your warranty has expired.

I have the EXACT same problem. I'm getting a new bulb anyway until I find the right replacement.

2 years of solid use and over 3000 hours on my first bulb with almost no complaints, except for two dust blobs that can be seen in extremely dark scenes. I really am curious if there is a cause for all the issues that everyone has in common. Mine is sitting on top of a media tower at the back of a room.

On my second bulb at 1200 hours and decided to recalibrate tonight. This bulb sucks compared to the one that came with the projector. My brightness is already at the level my first bulb was at 4000 hours and the best I can calibrate it is worse than that bulb at the same 4000 hours.

I would start off with the AV Science Store, that operates this forum. They are an Epson dealer and should be able to sell you a replacement lamp below list price.

I just replaced the bulb in my Epson 7500. It had reached 3106 hours of use in low power mode and was in service for just over two years. In the last week even in high power mode it just didn't look right. The bulbs retail for $299 on Epson's website. If this wasn't a fluke and I get the same 3000 hours of life out of the second lamp then this will become the most economical projector I have ever owned (from a lamp usage perspective). It already is the best projector I have owned from a quality of image perspective.

The latest Epson Pro projectors are still using the same model lamp/bulb.

Does anybody know how the warranty works after you get a replacement refurb unit. My original 2 year warranty expired 6 months ago, and just before it expired I got another unit due to a partial red screen. So now 6 months later the refurb stopped powering on. If my oringinal warranty is up, then what is the replacement unit I have now? I hope they do something about this since I only have 150 hours on the unit, but my gut tells me a 6 month warranty is probably the most I could hope for.

To those interested, this is the cfm data for the Epson; Intake fan: 0.58 m3/min.
Exhaust fan: 1.02 m3/min. Not sure if this has been posted or if anyone cares, but it could be useful to someone making a custom hushbox.

The easiest way to find out is simply to call them and ask. Epson has a pretty good reputation for service, so you may be in luck.

Does this projector have "Frame Locking" problems?
what kind of problem is that?

I am connected to my 6500 via HDMI but i the menu the signal shows it always as component - is this right?
Jumping in hear on the 6500 was great for a year and a half and then a basket ball size dust blob showed up.

Call up and got a refurbished 6500 which turned out to be a dud. Talk about pour quality review.... this unit was worst than my first unit. It had the loudest fan (sounded like a jet engine taking off), the iris sound like a chainsaw, 5 dead visual pixels, alignment was off.

Called them up and told them the refurbished unit was bad and said well we will ship you another refurbished unit. My hope is really high now that I get a quality unit Most likely the second refurb will be crap from reading all the customers here getting refurbs.

I can only hope for the best. The mention that they would escalate it up to try and get a new unit (I mentioned the 8700) and they said lets try the 2nd refurb before we get ahead of ourselves... so I agreed.

The second unit should get here on Monday. I have my fingers crossed.

I don't have my 6500UB on right now, but I think you are seeing a menu item that describes the type of video in the HDMI signal, which can be either digital RGB or digital component (YPrPb/YCrCb).

Hi I had hdmi issues with a rocketfish hdmi
Switcher and my Marantz blu ray so I was
Powering everything off
And without thinking(sober)
I switched off power switch on black .

So when I tried to switch on again
2 flashing red lights came on
Fan very high
Nothing else .
Then after 1 hour it came back
Now I have another issue I threw in my old
Bulb to see if I blew lamp
Old lamp wouldn't work
So put newer bulb back in.
I'm wondering if I may have smuged
Or moved a mirror inside.,

The image shows brighter in bottom third
Of display and a little out of focus
Definately contrast is off.

Then last night 2 red lights came back again
But this morning
My 6500 ub worked
With same off image.

Help its 4 months Out of warranty!

Anyone?

Hey all,

I have been thinking of getting a new 8350, but then stumbled onto Art's review of the 6500UB and then this thread. Reading Arts 8350 review left me thinking "yeah its good" but his 6500UB review (albiet an older review) was gushing.

If you took the dates of those reviews off and read both you would assume the 6500UB beats the 8350.

I know this is an older PJ, but I am now wondering if a refurbished 6500 for under a grand is a better buy that a new 8350 for a few hundred more than that.

Thoughts?
pcrx, I am still in favor of the inorganic LCD panels in the 6500UB versus the organic panels in the 6100/8100/8350.

2.5 years after buying it, my Epson 6500UB still works like new. I do have relatively quite low hours on it, though.

Chris,

Thanks! I hope I made a smart move, as I am expecting delivery today of a 6500UB refurb and 106" VApex tensioned screen. The PJ comes with a full warranty and from everything I have read it seems Epson has great customer service.

After reading so many horror stories about bulb failures going off like the 4th of July I am a bit concerned, but from reading the reviews out there it seems the 6500UB - even if a bit outdated - can still hang with the best of them.

For what our budget was, taking a gamble on "yesterdays luxury model" seemed a wise move than spending the same cash on "today's entry level."

Congratulations. I've owned a 6500 for 2 1/2 years. I'm on my 3rd bulb, and haven't had very good luck with them. 2nd bulb made it just over 1000 hours.

If you really want to get the most out of your 6500 see this:

It makes a huge difference IMO.

You're welcome. It took me quite some time to learn all of this, but in the end it was great fun and really improves the picture.

Here's a good starting point if you have never done a calibration:

Ok

I realize this is a dated thread and a dated projector, but I got my "new" 6500UB hooked up last night throwing onto a 106" VApex tensioned screen. To say the picture out of the box is staggering is a real understatement.

Set to Theater Black it is incredible. Plenty bright as well and this is a living room setting with "less than ideal" room color, etc

I cannot wait to dive into the calibration after a while to get this already incredible picture to look even better. WOW!

Hi I'm guess I'm
S o o l
Here
I had an Epson
Service center in Ontario
Quote me 1800 only for part!
Wow for an optical engine
I think that's what its called.
This pj was 4 months out of warranty and Epson
Offered me a replacement at $60 bucks off I guess
A refurb.
All this because I had hdmi handshake issues
With a switcher (rocketfish)
That I replaced it's good now no hDmi issues
And I flicked power switch
On
Back while it was on.
Now is pj garbage???????
Options at all????
Ill do up some screenshots here in the next handful of days. I have still not done a "real" calibration but we are really enjoying the PQ here. Absolutely NO issues with the "wow and pop" and getting a really bright image - even with an adjacent room light on. So far theater black seems to be the best for movie viewing at night.

Watched Tron Legacy, the blacks are great!

Viewed a half dozen movies so far. Still need to fire up HD cable and the Xbox 360 on it...

$1800 for a part without labour
Goodbye Epson
All this for shutting off button on back while it was on?
What if I had a power surge that's common?

Hopefully optoma hd 82
Or a decent 720 p
Will do as a replacement.
Not epson

Looks like I am going to join you pcrx in getting the Epson 6500ub. Everything points to this being the best price/performance for a sub $1k projector that I can tell.
