Love my Visual Apex tab tensioned electric screen. No imperfections or variations, flat as a board and the price for a tab tensioned electric is unbeatable:

So I'm loving my 6500ub. I've got it projecting onto a bedsheet taped to the wall while I figure out what size screen to get. I was originally thinking The biggest I could go is 120" but then I saw an Elite screens electric at 125". Now if I really wanted to I could move up to 150" which takes up nearly my whole wall. I'd need a lower profile unit for my components and center speaker and I'd have to put my left and right speaker all the way to the wall but wow. That's an immersive screen size. smile.gif

It looks great to me at night and that's primarily when I would be watching the projector but it could be pushing it for the 6500. This is a massive thread and I did a search but it hasn't been very active lately. What size screens are people using and how do people feel that are on the upper screen size limits for this projector? I'm looking for a budget screen and so far bigger is feeling better. I've been looking at the Favi and Elite spectrum screens on Amazon. There is a 135" Elite VMAX screen for under $500. This may be the way I should go. Anyone have experience with this screen and 6500ub?

I have a 6500ub (love it!) but I'm afraid I don't have the experience with the screen manufacturers you mention. I have mine paired with a 96" Carada (1.0 gain). I preferred to go wa smaller screen for brightness.- Carada may be out of your price range, but it's still considered a budget scrreen, and their customer service is second-to-none.

Others may disagree, but here's a few general tips...

- You'll want to consider a screen with some gain, you'll lose some viewing angle, but will likely need every lumen the 6500 can give.

- With a budget screen, you kind of get wyou pay for. Some light will probably get lost (leaked through the screen material). Stated "screen gain" is often not as high as claimed.

- IMO, you will get a more satisfying image if you went smaller. The 6500 wasn't designed to be a light cannon.

120" Seymour XD in a light controlled room, 1.3 gain IIRC. Seems perfect, but don't recommend any larger or lower gain because light output decreases as the bulbs age.

I guess by more satisfying you mean brightness. I watched it last night at about the 135" point and was pretty blown away by the size factor. I sit about 12-13' from the screen and the projector throw is about 17-18' right now. At that size the image projects over the sheet and onto the white block wall behind it so mostly I'm impressed by the size rather than the purity of the entire image. It's kind of hard to say how much it will improve at a smaller screen size. I must say that I'm not noticing a tremendous difference in brightness between 120" and 135". Maybe I should live with the projector and play with the sizes a little more before a final decision. On the other hand I've started to think that perhaps I should just get a cheap pulldown for now. The 135" Elite is priced less than the 120" and at $164 it could be worth it to live with that size for a while rather than spending hundreds more to find out it doesn't work for me. I don't want to go small only to regret that later and wish I'd gone bigger.

That screen looks great but at $2,000 it's a bit out of my price range.

I've only had the projector for about 4 days but I haven't noticed any issues that I've been reading about here. No noticeable convergence problems, no dust blobs, no noise from the Iris and FI doesn't seem to have any problems either. I started reading at the beginning of this thread but I haven't made it through the whole thing so maybe some of these issues have been resolved by now.

I do have a couple of questions though.
  • How can I be sure the auto iris is working? I've tried to a/b with it on and off and I hear no grinding or noise of any sort really. Sometimes I think I can notice a difference in the picture but then the scene changes and I'm questioning if I saw anything at all.
  • I live in the desert so my house is dusty. I can see that dust has immediately gathered on the outside of the lens and when I look inside of the lens it appears that there are several little panels of glass going back that also have dust on them. Is this a precursor to the dreaded dust blobs? How can I minimize, maintain or clean this internal dust if necessary?
  • I've seen some posts were people are saying that using high mode on the lamp doesn't effect bulb life. Has this been found to be true?
  • Can someone recommend a good inexpensive mount? Perhaps a monoprice product? They seem to have quality items for much less than name brand etc. Are the mounting wholes the same as the 8350? There is much more discussion on that projector than on this one. In fact I've been reading about that projector and trying to apply the information to this one. They seem to be fairly similar other than the black levels. Is this a fallacy?

I haven't been here for a while now. Had enjoyed the last 3+ years.

Anyways, i have a few issues and looking for solutions. I am guessing my projector is less than 200 hours ( will look it up tonight). The bottom of the screen has pinkish color (about 3-4 inches total in height). Anybody has this issue?

Also, with the last few bluray players, I get random screen turn off for a second or two and it then the video displays again. It never bothers me that much but lately it has done more frequently. I had this issue since after first year of ownership. I am using any onkyo receiver 805.

Three and a half years later, my Epson 6500UB still looks fantastic, though I did cause a couple of dust blobs when I didn't remove it from the room while doing some remodeling. (I only put a blanket over my unplugged equipment.) Now, I need to figure out how to clean them out. They are only visible when the screen is blank.

I had one that was like your description from factory. I RMA'ed it years ago. Only showed up on black image. How many hours on your projector?
I only have 1250 or so hours on my projector, maybe less. It is certainly out of warranty, so I doubt I could get anything done without paying for it. Since I have worked on some LCD rear-projectors in the past, I will probably pull this one apart at some point when I am ambitious. It doesn't bother me enough as it is.

Has anyone used a 6500UB on a 2.35:1 156" diagonal 1.2 gain screen in a fully light controlled room? I currently have a Sony Qualia 004, but I have a chance to get a 6500UB that I'd like to use for more casual viewing since the Qualia lamps are so expensive.

So I just picked up a used 6500ub. It was sold with a burnt out bulb and a reassurance it was working fine. I replaced the bulb and discovered it had banding on the top and bottom of the screen (not too surprised). I took it apart and found one piece of glass was in the wrong place. Now it's back together and works and looks great. Just one issue -- a good deal of light exits from the front grill by the lens. Is this typical for this projector? I have it 12 feet back from the screen, so it's not a big room, but there is enough light that it spills a little directly on the screen. Can anyone confirm if their projector allows that much light to exit through the front grill? If not I'll go back in there and see if something is out of place.

While there can be a little light from the front grill, I have not seen any that "spills directly on the screen".

Rgustafson-

Welcome to AVS Forum.

My 6500 also emits a bit of light from the front, but nothing that gets to my screen that I can tell. My screen is about 9 feet from the projector's lens.

I would like to hear more about the banding and loose glass piece. Since banding or color stripes are the only long-term problems I have heard of these 6500s getting, it would be nice if it is something that can be easily fixed as you did with the problem you saw.

How many 6500UB (Refurb) owners still under warranty? I've had mine for a little over a year. For the most part, its great, but I'm getting more and more frustrated with HDMI signal lock issues. It often takes more than a minute to get signal lock. I miss the opening scenes sometimes. The image is very good on this one, so I'm hesitant to call in a warranty exchange. Anyone exchange their 6500 recently? Do they still have any for replacement?

Mine just lost a bulb after 13 months at around 1400 hours. Installed a new bulb and still looks great!
Yes, these units take 30 to 60 seconds for a signal lock when you switch inputs

For the terrific picture they get that is a very minor irritation.

I have a spare in the box still, just in case.

Amazon is selling a new 6500UB today for $2799.00.

This is an excellent projector!
