Infocus X1 and the 1080i mystery...

Hello there. I'm "the new guy" and VERY new to the audio/video world.. but I searched the archives and didn't quite find an answer to my question so I will pose it here and hope you pros can point me down the right path.

I have a converted bonus room/man-cave with an Infocus X1 that I've had for years. Its great to watch DVD's (s-video) and television has always been OK until I saw my Father-in-laws new HD flatscreen. Ouch. It was hard to watch regular TV on the X1 after that..

Well, I'm pretty sure that the X1 isnt an HD projector, but I read that it could accept an HD signal, so I got the $6 HD box from Comcast and decided to see how the old girl would project. I upgrade my firmware to 4.3 and picked up a VGA to Component Video Adapter. Plugged it into the component-out on my HD box and WOW. Big difference. Not quite father-in-laws new flat screen, but a million times better than before. I was actually quite impressed with the clarity.

Here is my question: When I turn on the projector to HDTV, the source displays "Computer 1080i" and everything looks pretty crisp and great. The problem is, when I go to all the other (non-HD) channels, the projector looses the source and goes blue screen. I'm sure I am sounding ignorant, but this has me stumped. I love me new "HD-ish" projector setup, but I would like to be able to watch all the other older channels too.. any advice on what I'm doing wrong? Thanks in advance and I look forward to sticking around and learning here!

I could be wrong on this, but it sounds like you are trying to force a 480i signal through your component to VGA input on the X1. The X1 only does 480i through the S-video or composite input.

Does your cable box have settings? I know my X1 will take 480p through the component/VGA, but not 480i. You may need to tell the cable box to put out SD through 480p instead.

good thought. not sure how to do that.. before I put attached the component input, I could see all channels fine through the S-video cable, its just when I went to the component to VGA that I could only see the HD channels...

EDIT: It worked! You're a genius, Ruhl. I set the SD channels to 480p, not i... I guess I have a lot to learn. Working great now! Thanks again.

Awesome. Glad to hear it! We X1 owners are the dinosaurs on this board..... but I'm keeping mine (and using it) until either it (or the bulb) completely dies. Bought it years ago, but hardly ever used it until lately.

Hey I'm still in the X1 arena, until I can pony up for a new projector.

Can someone point me to how to upgrade the firmware to the latest & greatest. I know I'm way out of date, cuz I've never updated.

You are in luck! I just upgraded mine recently when my projector was loosing synch with an HD source combined with quickly flashing bright scenes. The upgrade is worth the time!

Yes, the X1 combined with an HD source is a HUGE upgrade. I can't wait till I upgrade my projector, but I am happy with what I have for now.

ALL X1 owners: You need to bookmark this site. It hasn't been updated in years, but it still has a lot of info that all X1 owners should have.

jrgriff, follow the links on updating firmware.

You can get the firmware update from the Infocus website,

http://www.infocus.com/Support/Produ...ectors/X1.aspx

or here...

http://www.kitsunegari.net/infocus/

Make sure you read the instructions carefully (PDF file on the website), because it took me several attempts to get the computer to synch with the projector. Good luck!

Hey Chris Big Thanks !! Should breathe a little more life into my X1.

You bet! You'll need some kind of USB cable (I seem to recall).... to connect the computer to the projector. I had one laying around, I'm sure you will too. If not, you'll need to pick one up at Radioshack.

In the distant past, people talked about flashing the X1 with the 4800 firmware. It supposedly has some glitches, but was supposed to improve the X1 image, even better than the 4.3 firmware (supposedly). I never did it, because I was worried that it might damage my projector....

I went for 5+ years and never upgraded my firmware (until last month). It's worth it.

Great stuff Chris. One thing to note, I tried to upgrade my firmware through my Vista laptop and it would not work to save my life.. I was very worried I would screw up the X1 firmware by the infocus uploading program locking up in Vista.

I tried it on my XP laptop and it went through perfect the first time. Note to X1 owners, dont upgrade via a vista OS! Use XP!

a simple USB printer cable works great to upgrade firmware. I just stole the one off my printer.

Anyone solved the noise problem on an X1 without sending to the service centers
post #11 of 13
It sounds like you guys really like your infocus x1... I am looking to buy a projector and a store where i live has the infocus in82 , have you heard anything good or bad about this projector..

The ONLY way to solve the noise issue with the X-1 (or most DLP projectors) is to replace the color wheel. It cannot be repaired, lubed, etc. It uses Bronze bearings, once they start to fail, that's it. The big problem is, Infocus does not have color wheels for the X1. And the color wheels for the X2 and any of the SP48XX projectors are different.

Of course, if you want to try and lube it, go ahead. Just be prepared for the lube to be slung all over the area as well as all over the color wheel, causing more issues. That's why they use Bronze bearings. It gets really hot there that close to the lamp and any lube will not stay where you put it.

I just ordered a color wheel in March for the Infocus X1 for my Infocus SP4800 which has been sitting there for a few years with a broken color wheel(bad bearings). Despite what some may claim, the color wheel for the X1 and the SP4800 are the same because the SP4800 is a reworked X1 and the optical parts are the same (according to Sheridan) but some of the part numbers are different. I couldn't believe they actually had it in stock. It only took 4 business days to get to Southern California from China. I was skeptical buying from Alibaba and a Chinese company (Guangzhou Yue Yu Electronic Co., Ltd), but am pleased with the results.

Guangzhou Yue Yu Website:
http://yylamps.en.alibaba.com/index.html

Nancy Chou was my salesperson and was very nice, though she made a couple of mistakes - I asked if she had a color wheel for an X1 and she sent me a price quote for an X2, but quickly apologized and resent the correct quote (same price). It was $66 for the color wheel and $28 Fedex shipping from China. The package went through Alaska and Tennessee before arriving in Southern California a day ahead of schedule. The other mistake she made was the tracking number was one digit off. Also, she told me to make sure and check the item before accepting it from Fed Ex. One other thing...I had to log into Paypal and manually make the payment since the website on Alibaba.com doesn't have a way to pay for the part. You have to add a note when you make the payment on paypal for the part.

I know I sound like a salesman for the company, but I wish someone had found this company and posted it here a long time ago. $94 total for the part and the projector is working like new again.

BTW, the lamp won't power up if the color wheel doesn't power up first and send a signal to the computer. I thought I had bigger problems than just the color wheel until I found the manual online.
