back up your game saves (assuming it still boots), deactivate your psn account, and buy a new UK slim.

Probably the best idea.

The place where i got mine fixed it broke again 2 weeks later and i have took it back and i had warranty on it and i should get it back in 2days...and the man said its best to sell the 80gb ps3 and buy a brand new slim one..i dont want to plug on my ps3 and try and transfer the data to another hard drive or whatever because i may get ylod again and then ill have to pay £70 again...sony are unfair.
Sucks to get the yellow lights, red lights or any other errors but most of this can be fixed yourself if you feel comfortable taking it apart and you are out of warranty of course. If you are in warranty I would let Sony fix it but otherwise they are going to try to charge you $150 just to trade it out with a refurbished PS3. There is a guide in my sig for many different PS3 problems you might want to check out.

i have gave it in at my local repairing store and they say that it is best to sell it when i get it back YLOD twice in 2 weeks..im wondering if my ps3 is from america and can i trade it in a store in england..and then buy a slim...otherwise i will put it on ebay or something. thanks for your help people.

Well, my August 2007 purchased 60 GB just bit the dust.
After reading the thread, I may reflow it just to get a valid backup before moving to a slim.
No real reason to post, other than to chime in and mourn the death of my PS3...
now I'm scared for my phat ps3.
All I can say is 14 months down the road my refurbed exchange phat 60 gig is still going strong. On probably 6 hours a day average with at least 4 hours a day of gaming. And if it dies I'll do the reflow and backup then Ebay here I come LOL
post #279 of 430
how do you reflow it..i got mine back off my local repair store and i went to update ma ps3 system and i felt the back of it and it was boiling hot..lucky i turned it off because i could have had ylod for the 3rd time in just a month...any1 tell me how to reflow it
post #280 of 430
Mine booted!
I deleted anything I could to reduce the size of the backup.
19 minutes remaining with fingers crossed.

PS3Freak, I used gilksy's excellent documentation.
I, however, have to have one more post before I can post links.
So, next post.

Unit ran Folding all night and is still going.
Interestingly, the fans now run at low.
Before the ran at high the entire time.

PS3Freak, I used gilksy's excellent documentation.
A YouTube video series starts at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U70SgRDVcBo
He also has a PDF.
That is at http://www.filefactory.com/file/af246bg/n/YLOD_fix.pdf
I used a Wagner adjustable heat gun that I already owned.

Good luck.
if this reflow works let me know about it thanks for the help anyway..
I just actually sent mine into a guy on eBay today. $70+shipping to him for the service, we'll see how it works out. If it is a re-flow problem, I might invest in a heat gun in case it happens again. Recently had similar problems with laptop motherboards and I might as well fix it myself.
If any1 can fix ps3's and are from birmingham reply to me back thanks
post #285 of 430
Not to be Donny Downer...But has ANYONE had a reflow last more than 1 to 3 months? I have yet to find anything to prove the contrary.
I was right about a month. It shouldn't be considered a permanent fix, but a necessary step to get a last backup, Deactivate the console (can't do it from the web site) and maybe prolong the inevitable.
I'm sick of this. My reflow 60G lasted almost a year before YLOD again. What would it take to have a permanent fix? I'm willing to pay good money for a permanent fix!

Thats a decent period for a reflow your lucky
Reball could possibly last longer.
Reball will last just as long 1-3 months, I did a reball first time around lasted little over 3 months. Then did heat gun fix 3 times first time lasted 3 month, 2nd time over a month then last time 2 weeks, and would not work after an attempted 4th time.

Mine was fixed over a month ago and it still is going strong. Was able to create a backup, transfer, play games and I left it on for 12 hours straight and it is still going.

On another note, did anyone have any of their 20gig units die?

I have 4 PS3's and the one that YLOD'd was a 60gig first week release purchased and funny enough it was the loudest PS3 out of all my PS3's, and seemed to give off more heat than the rest of them, so I wasn't surprised that it died first.

My (2) 20gig Day 1 units gets used more than the rest and they are still going strong.

anyone getting this issue on the slims?

My launch 60GB (now 320) died over the weekend after 3.5 half
years.

Ill be trying the gilksy fix tonight after I buy some thermal compound at BB.

Im hoping to get a few months out of it to hopefully bridge me to a Slim/Move bundle.

Anyone know if the slims are having the ylod issue?

No no slims have been reported.
Also you will waste 4-5 hours of your time if you do glisky fix. His process is not good enough. It will only last a few days. You also will need 3 tubes of thermal. Chips are big and it takes more than a razor thin layer. I repair these everyday. Trust me some people try and end up giving to me. Good luck. Skype me if you need help.
theoretically, why doesnt reapplying the thermal compound make the unit
close to new?

I guess I dont really understand what this reflow actually does.

the amount of compound that is on the unit looks to be a razor thin amount,
why are you using more? just curious

I did get the Arctic 5 which I hope is the best

I take it you took it apart already from you saying it's razor thin. It's razor thin because the clamps smashed it all out over time. If you put on razor thin it won't make full contact and you will have ylod within hours. Look at all the excess around the edges that was pushed out. I don't want to give all my secrets away on this because I do this as a business. I apply the thermal in a 4 step process. I also mod the ps3 fan to run at full rated speed. It's loud but makes it last much much longer. I have never seen anyone do this ever. I had to figure out how to do it myself. Also the glisky reflow time is not sufficient enough. Skype me if you need me even if I'm not logged in send me a message. My skype is in my profile. Also clean everything. I get people bring me there attempt and all they did was scrape the old thermal off. Clean and vacume everything. By the way I'm repairing one right this very second.

Oh putting new thermal doesn't fix the issue of YLOD. It has to be reflowed. ( the solder connections under the chips have lost connection)

My 60gig finally died on July 17... Sent it to Gophermods and while they did fix YLOD, GPU was dead.... Got my money refunded. Called Sony on July 27th & coffin got here on the 30th. Sony got the system on August 4th, and a "new" one is it's way to me as we speak... To be delivered tomorrow.

Funny thing is, no charge on my credit card yet... There was a temp charge but it went away! Crossing my fingers that it stays that way lol!

I'm having intfrequent YLOD's on my 40gb.

The first time it happend my console was pretty much dead, I was unable to turn it on and retrieve my disc. I tried reseating the HDD and it didn't do anything. Luckily I had an extended warranty through Walmart that was just about to expire (really lucky) and called and sent my unit in for repair.

They sent my unit back extremly quick and they even made sure they put my game back in the case I sent with it (thought for sure they were going to lose it). However as soon as I hooked up my PS3 I imediately got the YLOD again, it never turned on. However after a few attempts it sprang to life and was working!!

It didn't last long though as the very next day I went to turn it on and again got the YLOD. However a few more attempts and it turned on and was working just fine. I make it a point to remove any game I am playing from my PS3 before I shut it down for the fear that it's going to die again.

I called the Waranty company and they are going to try and repair it again but I'm puzzled. I've searched but I've never heard of someone else having this issue appear and dissapear. You either have the YLOD and have to fix it by some means or you don't have the YLOD.

I'm hoping its just something that is loose however that doesn't make much sense because the machine isn't moving when it works and then doesn't work. The company said they will do a better job of troubleshooting the system and if they fail to repair it this time they will send me a brand new unit. My only concern is what will they do with my discarded unit if they cant fix it...sell it to someone else? Should I remove all personal information from my unit before sending it in?

Where did you send it for repair? Sony? You cant deactivate your system if it doesnt turn on. Also YLOD can happen when it wants in the beggining stages. You can have it turn off then a couple days later you turn it on and it works for a bit the it shuts off.

Anyone been able to eject a disk from a YLOD 60GB? Mine just died and I went and bought a slim, and I am waiting to get my 60GB fixed but would like my disk back now.

I tried holding the eject while flipping on the switch in the back but that didn't work.

Any other ideas?

YMMV

A year ago my 60GB died. I bought a slim and was sending my 60GB back for repair. I wanted my Uncharted disc out of the unit. I took the 60gb apart very carefully. When I got to the slot loading drive i had to disassemble it to get the disc out. I could not put the drive back properly to save my life. I jammed it back in the box and it sounded like a baby rattle....the whole thing.

I sent it into Sony anyhow and they repaired it without issue...I was surprised and wasn't expecting to get it back...

You got back your original? I really wish Sony was actually fixing the consoles sent in instead of replicating Microsoft's route with the refurb revolving door... at the very least, they could decrypt the HDD and transfer your data to avoid that PITA.
