Worst Nightmare: PS3 blinking red light of death! - Page 12

...and the SACD playback! I used all of it. It was the swiss-army knife of consoles before the BR laser died on it, and then it inevitably succumbed to YLOD.

YLOD. Have him call up Sony and they might be able to do something since his warranty just expired. Question, is it a Slim PS3?

Otherwise there's the YLOD fix on the next to recover data and temporarily fix it.

The slim is very hard to do ylod fix on. It's not as reliable as the old fat ones.

first slim I heard it ylod!

Hi all,

My PS3 slim died out too. Same 3 beeps before it shuts down. It happens at random. The unit is out of warranty, so I opened it and re-applied the thermal paste. No luck. Is there any other way to fix it?
Did you do the reflow first? Check youtube for instructions. It seems the only permanent fix is to get the board re-balled with leaded solder. I think if I had a slim though I would be sending it back to Sony and try my luck with a refurb. The slims are "supposed" to be less likely to fail,
however now I'm starting to get a little nervous about replacing my fat with one.

I don't live in the US, so a Sony refurbish is out of the question. Still checking whether there are any reflow / reballing services where I live

I took the refurb slim to replace my fat PS3. I will say this: I don't miss the constant fan noise. The slim is soooo quiet. I had the choice of a $99 160 GB or a $129 fix on my 60GB. I didn't think having my 4+ year old unit fixed for an additional 30 bucks was a smart move.

Reflow is definitely only temporary. I also wouldn't trust a reball, since reballing is only replacing the RSX solder, not the CELL or the rest of the board.

Ultimately the issue is solder and the horrible cooling design. New solder on only the RSX isn't going to fix that and is in most cases probably only a temp fix. Not worth the $100-150 they want for it. At least for the phat.... I've never heard of a slim going belly up. YLOD is a general error, so in your case it might not even be a solder connection issue unfortunately. We've just come to find that in the phats, 95% of the time it's the RSX or CELL breaking solder points.

I have a problem!
I have the original 60 gig PS3, and never had a problem with it.
I put a movie (blue ray) in my PS3 to watch. After I put the disc in, I made a phone call. As I was on the phone, for about 10 minutes, I heard the PS3 beep and the light on the front of the Playstation was blinking red. I shut the PS down. When I touch the power button and turn it on, it turns on then shuts off immediately and the red light on the front is blinking.
I can't get the movie out of the PS3. When I hit the eject button, the PS turns on then shuts down, and the red light starts blinking again. The movie won't come out. The PS3 won't stay on long enough for the movie to eject.
Can someone please help me.
Thanks

Does the light flash yellow for a brief moment, then red? If so, you have the dreaded "Yellow light of death." There is no cure for that.

You are describing exactly what happened to me, recently. After much research, and then a call to Sony, I found I had two options.

1. Have my unit repaired for $129
2. Have it replaced with a refurb 160GB, for $99.

Since my Ps3 60GB had been repaired once before, I decided another fix was probably not the way to go, and I opted for the refurb 160GB.

With either option, Sony will return the disc inside the PS3 to you, along with your repaired or replaced unit. And, with either option, you will lose everything on your PS3 Hard drive.

I know this isn't what you want to hear. However, if you research all the "fixes" that require you to open up the unit yourself, and perform some moderately technical repairs, yielding a fixed PS3 with a lifespan of zero to 3 months, you will probably find these are the only two options.

Also, the 60GB model cannot use the "fan test to eject a disc method." The fan test does not work on the 60GB.

Call Sony. They'll explain the options. Give them a credit card #. They send you a box for your PS3 with a FedEx shipping return label. You send it back to them and have a new or repaired unit in 7-10 days. They bill your credit card when they ship your unit back.

Sorry for your loss.

You can call 800-345-SONY (7669) or go to the online service request page.

The model # is CECHA01 (60 GB)
You will need the serial number off the unit.

Here is the Sony webpage you want.

https://service1.us.playstation.com/...9-25E88499F38C

Best of luck. I've been there, it sucks. However, the people at Sony are very helpful and efficient. The process is relatively painless. The wait for your PS3 is no fun, of course. It makes for a good opportunity to watch all the stuff on your DVR....

I have to get the disc out of the PS3 before I send it anywhere.
It is not mine.
Is there a way that I can get the disc out of the PS3 without taking it apart, and destroying the console?

Nope. But, they will send it back to you, in a protective sleeve.

If the disc is a rental, I'd just explain to them what is happening, and they'll probably waive any fees. If it's a friend's disc, I'm sure they'll understand.

You can take it apart without destroying it. Getting the BD drive out is rather easy. 7 screws and a ribbon cable if I remember correctly.

Being a 60GB it's out of warranty anyways.

Then you take apart the BD drive and it's out. Easy as cake.

This is what I'm going to have to do, it's a brand new disc, they won't understand.
This is bs.
I can't believe that Sony didn't put a way to get a disc out if it got stuck.
I think I'm done with the Playstation. All I use it for is watching blue rays anyway. I'll get a blue ray player for watching movies, and use my Xbox for playing games.

just turn on the PS3 by hitting the eject button, should work unless your thing is super burned out

He said in his original post that didn't work. And, the 60GB PS3 can't perform the fan test eject trick, either.

What do you mean "it's a brand new disc, they won't understand" ???

My PS3 ate my Skyrim disc the day after I got it. It sucked to wait, but I got it back. And, the Sony guy even said, "Oh man, that sucks" when I told him what was happening. He totally understood.

So, unless you've got a sex tape on that disc, I don't see what the big deal is.

Sounds like a local vid shop rental? Or any rental?

Yeah, I understand if you don't use it a standalone BD player might be a better investment, especially price wise now. Still, I love sonys first party studios and could never go without their innovative and risk taking games. MS just hasn't even stared to approached the breath of genres I like to play with their exclusives.

Since you're taking it apart anyways, try preforming the reflow fix. It's a little more work than just getting int the BD drive, but the BD drive is a little more complicated to take apart so this soultion ends up being easier IMO.

It's only temporary, but it will allow you to get the disc out normally, backup any data, and then trade it in to Gamestop for credit towards a new slim. The worst they can do is refuse it.

This way also will ensure you don't damage the BD drive and power supply. You can then sell it as a YLOD unit on ebay for $80 or so for the BD/power supply parts and other boards not effected.

I rented it from blockbuster.

I would just call blockbuster and explain that the disc is stuck inside and you can't get it out without destroying your system. Tell them that you plan to ship the unit to sony for repair, and will be able to return the disc in about 2 weeks when sony gets it back to you.

I find it hard to believe that your Blockbuster manager would stick it to you for being honest. As long as you are polite and sincere, just about any business manager will work with you.

You could always bring your PS3 into the blockbuster and show them the problem if they won't work with you. Tell them "Here's your disc. Now can I have my PS3 back?"

I just did this, it took 3 hours and it didn't work.

How much would you have to pay Blockbuster for the disc?

Yeah, if you got the PSU and the BD drive was still intact with the controller board you probably could have gotten $50-80 for em on ebay.

If someone wants the My broken Ps3, you can have it. It's taken apart, I have all the screws and stuff. I think im gonna keep the HD.
I tore the plastic lid (it says PLAYSTATION 3 on it) off, and broke all the clips to it. I couldn't get that little, weird looking screw unscrewed.

Chalk up another YLOD 60GB. I was hoping that mine would be the one to last. Wrong. Jan 07, smoke-free, kid-free, light use, out in the open, house always under 23C. Half an hour into some online MW2 last night, and it just shut off instantly. Blinking red light. Can't get the disc out. Spins the BD for a moment, light goes yellow, then flashing red.

I am going to try to reflow it so I can copy it over to a new slim. Don't know if it will work.

Damn.
