i got my 60 gig ps3 with YLOD fixed by JD Electronics you can find them by going to ebay and typing in YLOD in the search box

How much did it cost and what was there turnaround in terms of time?

i sent my console in on monday fed ex they received it wed and repaired it wed calling me before starting work to discuss my issues and then called me 1 hour later with results in my case success. my console is curently in the mail arrives next week. they claim a 75% success
i payed 75 on e bay for there flat rate repair also if you check there feedback there is alot of feedback from people who had success with there repair.

The overall PS3 failure rate is still in the low single digits percentage wise,
since there were at least a half million 60 gigs sold initially, the failure percentage would be much higher overall, but it isn't. What we have is a simple case of all PS3 60 owners with failed units who post on forums coming forward, while most who have ones that never failed say nothing or very little. Polls like the ones on here, which tend not to be accurate, are interestingly similar in numbers or if higher not by much.

Seth I support your owning a PS3 and your dilema, but the way you put it one would tend to believe by implication the PS3 60g failure rate is over 50% or some bogus elevated number, but facts prove drastically different than your generalized claim.

My Dec 06 60gb just bit the dust this way today. Right when I was about to beat MGS4 for my second time.

That makes it PS3 - 1, 360 - 4. I need a new hobby.

Sony rec'd my PS3 today (19th) and have already shipped a replacement. Makes me wonder if they even tried fixing it or if, upon looking at it, they realized that it would take too long than their promised 14 day turnaround. Well, there's another $164 that Sony has taken from me.

Are they shipping a 60g to replace it or is it an 80g?

I dread the day if/when my 60g breaks because I'm worried I'll get a replacement with no media card reader, 2 USB ports instead of 4, and no hardware BC.

For all the concerned peeps out there. I am receiving a 60gb model as a replacement. So I will still have all my card readers and more importantly, 4 usb ports.

Yeah, your old 60gb will wind up being someone else's return at a later date once it is repaired/refurbed. I wish I could help you get back all you lost data though. Makes me want to back up more often. But then again, what good is a back up when it's a whole new PS3 (well somethings are transferable, but not all).

It's weird though. Whenever I click on the tracking number provided in the email, it says that UPS cannot find the shipment.

The activation/deactivation thingy that you told me about, it was for the PSP not the PS3.

If you run a backup on your PS3, then it brakes and they send you a new one, what kind of stuff won't transfer over?

That just means UPS hasn't scanned the box yet. It's likely waiting for a scheduled daily pickup. It will hit the system late tonight or tomorrow.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but besides games that lock their save data, I believe that all purchased PSN items won't restore and you'll have to re-download them. If my recollection is correct, when my 60gig died and I received a refurbished unit from Sony, I had to re-download all the games and DLC I had purchased.

In case anyone reading this thread has Singstar: DLC for that one is an even bigger PITA. Its tied to at most one console at a time, so you'll have to contact Sony to move your licenses from the old PS3 to the new/refurbished one. Their phone support understood the issue with Singstar and corrected it within a few days (they needed to get my information then pass it on to another technician to do the actual license transfer). I still had to re-download the Singstar DLC.

Well, I got the email last night. I don't think it takes that long for UPS to update it. In fact, I remember when I gave my PS3 to UPS, I got the slip with the tracking number, went for dinner, walked home, checked the status on UPS website and it was already there.

I'll wait a bit more before I call Sony again!

Wow, I had no idea these would not transfer. This does make sense now that you say something b/c I tried to backup just my rockband 2 save file a couple of weeks ago and it wouldn't let me.

Since you can redownload your purchases from the PS Store, would you be able to redownload the song export key and rip the songs from the RB1 disc again?

Alas my bubble (i thought the 60gb would be invincible) was burst last night when my PS3 failed to power on and gave me the yellow flashing light. I was shocked and in disbelief for a while, i just kept poking at the power button praying that it would turn on the next try . Panic set in so i looked around on google/avs and tried all solutions from letting it sit for a few hours to removing the hard drive. I finally accepted the fact that it was likely dead and called sony and they said it would be $169. Im going to call in tomorrow to see if i can get it repaired for free (was bought in august 07) but otherwise i cant imagine being without my ps3 or loosing my data . BTW my cod4 disc is stuck inside so im not sure how this all going to be handled/unfold...Was wondering if anybody else had a disc stuck inside when they sent their unit in for repairs.

IIRC you have to inform them that a game disc is still inside and they will send that back to you. Make sure you tell them

Yes, as long as you tell them that you have a game stuck in the drive, you will get it back.

I have a question:
For those that sent their systems to Sony for repair/replacements and used your credit card as method of payment; when were you charged for it?

I ask because Sony placed the charge when I sent in the initial form online, then the charge was removed and has not shown up since. I am going to be receiving my replacement unit tomorrow.
