Is there any change to create anyone official or unofficial firmware to support both external dvd-roms and dts downmix.

A lot of thanks.
Can anyone using b-rad's and Hanewin NFS Server, please explain how you set it up.

I did it exactly as it should be done, but the OSD will not display my files once again. It was working fine, then all of a sudden it didn't want to list anything.

I had Hanewin exports set up, I had the xmounts done, and the /tmp/media/usb/Videos folder was showing contents before. Restarted the WDTV and all of a sudden nothing is shown. I am getting no errors in the messages.txt either.

EDIT: I tried a simple test. I moved a bunch of my files out of a folder and checked again. It worked fine. Apparently there is a limit to the total size of the files in a folder. I added an MP3 folder with hundred of files and it lists them fine. However, a folder with a couple dozen movies, all 10GB+, and it would not display a listing. It only gave me a list when I removed some files from the list. I also made sure it wasn't a particular file giving this behavior. I guess organizing your directories is going to be important for this device, as you can't just pack a folder full of huge files.

EDIT 2: New symptom. It won't play any files now, even files it played before when it worked on b-rad 0.3. It gives an error, saying "Check manual about converting to supported format." for every file that worked before.

Greetings

I just upgraded from 8.6 to 9 and now I get the following

This folder is empty

I am using the same mount command, but nothing.
Was there something that changed that I am not aware of ?

Hi all,

CIFS vs. NFS using WDTV & DNS323 (NAS)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Conclusions
=========

CIFS NFS
mbits/s 19.7 51 2.6 x faster
Typical WD CPU usage 45% 75%
WD CPU% / mbits/s 2.28 1.47 NFS uses ~35% LESS CPU/mbit/s on WDTV
Typical DNS323 CPU 10% 36%
DNS323 CPU% / mbits/s .508 .706 NFS uses ~39% MORE CPU/mbit/s on DNS323 (who cares!)

Concerns
=======

At first when I saw the high CPU usage I was concerned, but then I realized that the transfer rate had more than doubled while the CPU usage had gone up by less than double on the WDTV. The calculated efficiency tells the story (cpu% / mbits/s). Note that the CPU usage is a very rough approximation from eyeballing the running top sessions.

If you look at the top sample data below for the WDTV you notice that the CPU usage is maxed out, there is no idle CPU%. I am not optimizing the network or using Jumbo frames during this test. When I have time I am going to look at the whole picture during playback. ie. how much CPU is being used to play the video vs. transport it over the network.
...

Hi Daystrom,

Can you tell me the xmount command for mounting dsn323 using CIFS?
I keep getting error message like:

xmount //192.168.2.2/movies dns323_movies cifs user=my_user,pass=my_pass
mount: permission denied. (are you root?)

try and either leave the box unplugged for a few minutes or hitting the reset button. I've seen this happen a time or two, reset fixed it up.

recently I bought a Zyxel NSA-220 NAS.
I activated a UNFS 3 server on it, shared a folder using
/i-data/md0/video 192.168.0.0/24(ro,insecure,no_auth_nlm,anonuid=0,anongid=0,no_root_squas h,no_subtree_check) in exports.

I am able to mount it on wdtv (with ip 192.168.0.112), I can see the mounted filesystem structure but, when I am trying to read from it i get an Input output error

I tested on another linux box (ubuntu 8, ip 192.168.0.113) I have no problem mounting and reading from that share.

Anyone knows what the problem could be?

GW=192.168.1.1
DNS1=192.168.1.1
DNS2=205.171.3.65

And the net.mounts like this :

xmount //192.168.1.2/see NetworkEntertainment cifs user=WDTV,pass=wdtv

I have then installed the firmware into my WD TV that got the USB/LAN adapter installed.

The WD TV starts upp, it takes some time, then the picture gets green and then it is showing that the WD TV is now using 192.168.1.10.

When going to the Video folder there is no network folder(NetworkEntertainment) ?

I can see from my other computers in the net that the WD TV is visible and online. It is also possible to reache the shared folder(see) from diffrent comsputers.

I do not have any password protection, but just in case I tried to add a WDTV account in Windows XP but this does not help?

What else do I need to do?

Edit:

This is from my message file :

Apr 5 11:36:04 wdtv user.notice root: Device eth0 configged as 192.168.1.10/192.168.1.1/255.255.255.0

I also notice that a folder called NetworkEntertainment is created on my USB stick?

I have now tried to contact the WDTV with FTP and this works fine, it was also no problem to replace the background image over FTP.

When going to Videos and Folders I still can´t see the mounted share?

What could be wrong? Do you know where I can get help with this?

Send your suggestion to WDC (official way)

Open ticket on support.wdc.com with same request.

This is really not big problem for WDTV have shoutcast radio support.(no HW reason only network is missing but we have it)

It is possible to add now but you have to buy USB-audio adapter (cost +10$) ( google openwrt net radio solutions)
and use madplay whole issue is WDTV doesnt have audio device like /dev/dsp you cannot use madplay mpd or mplayer now

I think network is not primary target for WDC now. and not for next 2-3 releases
they have so many bugs in latest preleased firmware they need to concentrate fix it.

only audio device is biggest issue becouse WDTV isnt cpu based stream decoder
all decoding is on sigma chipset this device will not do more then forward data to sigma chip
thats mean also player have to be changed

this is really odd we cannot listen radios/news/network portals like last.fm/ on this device

I can only advise send emails and request do WDC probably they will add option run external program from gui and add OSS/ALSA compatible device for external player then is no barrier listen shoutcast based services on device

I don't believe network will ever be supported in official firmwares. The simple reason would be that there is no network port in the WDTV. It may be possible to add it as shown by modified firmwares, but I think WDC considers this a simple and low cost device and have therefore no interest to add network support.

Maybe in the next hardware versions of WDTV..

Network isnt issue WDTV is linux based device also space on flashram is also no issue add 1-2 drivers is enought

They only add some screens to GUI and add possibility run external program from xml gui files

Add "/dev/dsp" device which will accept MPEG1layer3 raw stream thats all what we need for audio playback
its same like cat pcmwav.wav > /dev/dsp shout cast servers are nothing more then GET request aND raw codec data

we need only option send data to audio output everythink else we have

this is not solution for me http://www.coolgear.com/images/USBG-X2X11.jpg
if is device capable provide sound without addidional device
but its working line net radio player..... its ....... workaround

has anyone been able to successfully modify any of the variables? particularly
a.linux_cmd, just dropped into YAMON and did the setxenv a.linux_cmd "kernel params". Upon reset zboot now fails, now I've read 2 different things. That either iy requires mirroring the xenv settings and both copies need to be in sync. The other is the xenv settings are SHA-1 checksummed and if it doesnt match it fails.

Also, has anyone located the JTAG pins?

This improved version IS NOT available for download yet.

Blackie was reposting a twitter message sent by ScottWD. ScottWD is talking about a "new drop" (a new internal firmware version sent by WD developers to WD testers) which shows improvements.

There is no information yet about when and how the general public will get a next BETA or GENERAL release.

PS: OFF-TOPIC WARNING: please don't continue discussing BETA 1.02 in this thread. This thread is for people discussing CUSTOM (unofficial) firmware modifications, and the use of such custom firmware. Beta 1.02 is discussed elsewhere!

Please tell me how you dropped into YAMON. I spent some time working on it and only managed to brick my WDTV.

I'm also very interested in JTAG but haven't solved that yet either.

Here is my report for b-rac.cc regarding firmware WDLXTV 0.4.
The main feature I tested is how it handles my external CD/DVD player.
To make it short, it works

Now, more in détails:

1) when I activate "About" in the system menu, nothing happens and the box seems to be locked during few seconds.

2) I tried a DVD with AVI + SRT files and it looks like SRT files are ignored Is there an explanation for that ?

3) To switch to another DVD, it seems that going to standby mode is not enough. I need to reboot the box, meaning unplug then plug the power cable. Is there no solution to avoid that and allow an automatic umount/mount ?

4) when my DVD player is connected, the message "Scanning USB device..." never disappears. Is it normal ? Even after I unplug the DVD palyer and reboot, the message "Scanning USB device" is still here. The only solution to make it disappear was to disable media library and then to enable again.

5) Is there a solution to have external DVD support without media library ?

6) I am not sure but my feeling is that the boot takes more time than with the official firmware. Is it true ?

If things could be improved, my priorities would be my points in this order: 2 > 3 > 4 > 5 > 1 > 6

Regards

Thinking about it and after reading what cd.manager 0.7 is normally able to do, my current feeling is that I have a correct mount at boot (with label) but the eject button of my drive is not correctly handled by cd.manager.
bad luck

I managed to get swamped on some job related tasks this past week, so no screendump.app.bin for now, but I put toghether for your pleasure a tar.gz with all the required libs, modules, binaries and scripts.

Download the archive from h**p://www.mediafire.com/?namom4melzy

Extract someware it in your ext3 filesystem so that file attributes are preserved && cd to that directory.

./install_modules
./screendump dump.png

Edit: copy the generated png on a windows machine, open it in mspaint(not a joke) and save it; mspaint is one of few that recognise the generated png, i don't know why

Technical details:
The tool functions by loading a driver that exposes a framebuffer (em8xxxfb.ko && osdbuf_control) . Some binaries ar built by me, some are gathered from the net.

the framebuffer provided by em8xxxfb.ko is miss aligned; in order to use it you need to align it to PAGE SIZE (4096); this is bad, because all the tools that work with a standard framebuffer will crash and burn.

All in all, you can write the framebuffer too, so ... :

Anyhow, I will put toghether an screendump.app.bin in the near future.

I hope someone can add this to the adapters table in the Wiki. By the way, there are two entries shown for Airlink adapters. Aren't they the same device?

I can confirm that the Airlink ASOHOUSB USB-Ethernet adapter works well. It's the same Fry's $3.90 clearance special from a TX store. Performance seems comparable to a Trendnet TU2-ET100, corroborated by Richard's speed tests (thx Richard!).

Someone PLEASE update the Wiki table and add this information. The Airlink adapter is a steal, would've saved me some cash instead of buying the Trendnet.

hi b-rad-cc,

How much greasing of your wheels would it take for you to implement a scraper. One that connected to IMDB and automatically downloaded the thumbnail. Similar to what boxee and plex do.

Hey!

I have not manage to solve my problem.

I did the following :

1. Changed my admin account to password protected
2. Set the admin account to the one that the WDTV uses
3. Reduced the length of the shared name
4. Changed the 4 GB USB to a 128 clean USB memmory.

I think that it was really point 4 that solved my problem, on the 4GB memory card I got alot of files in the root that do not have any thing to do with the WDTV, this could be the problem.

There is one thing that I have notic, It is not longer possible to change to PAL? and every time I takes out the power cord and puts it right in the resolution sets to 720 even when I did use 1080p60 ?
