WINDVD9 vs ffdshow

Thread Starter
I built a HTPC a while back and I really like winDVD9. I love the upscalling of the all2hd feature, although I crank it down a bit so it doesn't look too manipulated. I've recently been having trouble with it- tried to reinstall, and it says it's allready installed, even though it's been uninstalled with Revo and registry has been cleaned.

So my question is this- I know you can adjust all the video settings with ffdshow, but from what I read, it just adds an artificial sharpness to everything. What I like about the all2hd is it adds a realistic "3D" look to standard DVDs, making them look upconverted. Can I get this same effect with ffdshow?

You can do whatever you want with ffdshow, for the most part.

I'd put more faith in ffdshow than "all2hd", to be honest. With ffdshow it's just a matter of finding the right settings... that's the hassle (mostly just time consuming testing different settings - there's too damn many... that's why there's a sticky thread about it). The limit of how good the upscaling can be with ffdshow is your CPU.

From this screenshot, it looks like "All2HD" also just adds artificial sharpness (local contrast enhancement), with halos everywhere.

There's no magic to this technique; ffdshow can degrade the image in much the same way, if you like.

I'd go with FFDShow for custom filters and best of all...its FREE!!

See my screenshot here (using sharpening and color filters). Though the downside is u introduce some unwanted noise with the sharpening. But when watching a movie, this is totally unnoticeble.

FFdshow will give you way better results, assuming your computer can handle the extra workload.

I am conviced the highest setting in this thread: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=719041 Will look miles better than all2hd
