Hi Sy-

I suspect you won't have a huge problem with timbre matching with that setup, although the you may wish to go with the UIW RSS II's, since they are a closer match for the 8's (they use very similar drivers).

However, the timbre matching across the front is far more critical than trying to precisely match front to back, so I think you will be fine.

I use Mythos 8's as my rear surrounds and UIW RSS IIs as side surrounds and have found them to work extremely well together--pretty seamless really.

Finally, I would suggest having strong sub(s) with that setup (and set your receiver to "small") to bring out their best.

Good luck!

Has anyone heard the AW5500/6500? I just purchaed the Mythos Ten over the weekend and was thinking of getting the 6500 for the L/R channels. I love that they have the racetrack bass radiator that match the Ten. These are supposedly Indoor/Outdoor speakers but that doesn't bother me.

May I respectfully ask: is using 2 other Mythos 10's as L/R not an option in your particular system? I would think that would give you a more uniform soundstage up front.
Yes, I would love to use two more Mythos Ten. Unfortunately, that is not an option at this time.

It's too bad they don't make a 6 inch mid/woofer in the other lines. I plan on going to my dealer tomorrow. Maybe, I'll just get the ProMonitor 1000 and be done with it because I would have to pre-order the AWs.

Hello all,
I'm on the process of upgrading my Home Theater system, and one of the biggest decision now is acquiring the much talk about Mythos ST for my Front L/R or going across to B&W 804s floor stander.

I currently have these on my system:

Pioneer SC-09 - Receiver
Pioneer BDP 71 - Blu Ray player
Pioneer Kuro Plasma TV
Mythos One - Front L/R
Mythos Eight - Center
Mythos Gem - Surrounds
Mythos SC 2 - Subwoofer

I came into the above two choices as I've done listening demo on both on same room, same hi-fi equipment, and found that each has their own unique advantages.

Both the ST and 804s, are retailing at the similar MSRP here (even though the 804s are a little bit higher, but I dont mind the price diff).

Would like to hear some more inputs/feedbacks before making my decision.

Thank you very much

Dan

Could you, would you mix the Mythos Ten center with Mythos One's L/R?

Would love to get the matching ST's, but pretty pricey for me at this point.

If I have a nice 15 inch sub, I am thinking I would not 'need' the subs in the ST's, but maybe I am wrong.

I would not mind getting two more Ten's but I don't think the wife likes the idea of wall mounts. Well she does not like the idea of upgrading my system period, but that is another thread

Yes, I would mix 10's with a Mythos One pair
I would mix them anywhere!

All Tens would match better according to me
But all Mythos speakers are voiced the same as you can see

Buy them! Buy them! CDnbum88
Do it! Do it! Before she makes you wait!

What speaker wires are folks using with their Def Tech's?

The $$$$$ ones or the $$$$ or the $$$ or the $$ one's?

I'm using 12 guage Blue Jeans Beldin cable with their banana plugs.

I've purchased nearly 350 feet of 10AWG Belden wiring from Blue Jeans Cable. Nothing but praise. Great experience.

I don't think you'll find an unbiased view here in this Mythos thread being that most here are Mythos fans
That being said....
The STs are pretty tough to beat just based on sound quality.
Throw in their amazing visual appeal and I think...
we have a winner!

The $ ones.

I use 14 gauge, although 16 gauge (or even 18 gauge ) would be more than adequate for the distances involved in my system. I use Monster and AR because I got them at "fire sale" prices, but brand is irrelevant. The length of the run is determinant, though.

Here is a handy reference chart developed by eminent speaker designer, Roger Russell.

I have to agree on all counts. I have nothing but good things to say about the 804's, but, like others here, when I bought for myself, I went with the Mythos. But really, dnainggolan, you won't go wrong with either. It's a matter of personal taste.

Hi

Please let me know if this package deal is a 1)OK 2) Good or 3)Excellent deal. I getting the following for $3900
  1. 2 Mythos STS Blk
  2. 2 Gem XL
  3. Mythos 9
  4. Denon 3808

I had gone to store with a budget of 2K, but after listening to many speakers for hours, STS came as the front runner.

great article!

btw, you can buy premium subwoofer/SPDIF coaxial cables 50' for $11 on the Internet and use these for long runs.

Very good article. Thanks for sharing.

Right now I have a over priced monster cable that is about 30-40 feet. If or when I get a new sub I will get something different.

I just ordered for my Mythos Ten center some Audioquest Type 4. When, when, when I get my ST, STS or Mythos Ones I will look to get some more Type 4.

I don't pretend to be an expert on prices (especially regarding the 3808), but I'd rate it a (3), or close to it. That would make a great system.

All I can say is 'jealous' for a deal like that.

I just got a new Ten for my center and got some used Gems and a used 3808ci and am loving life. The 6th ave. Pick your price is a good deal and it just finished up, but that sounds like a sweet deal.

Hi

Please advice what will be best receiver for the following setup Mythos STS, Mythos 9, GEM XL . I had narrowed down to Denon 3808 based on the great deal going on now and it is very highly rated in mine sites. I will be using it for 50-50 foe movies and music.

Please advice.

I am not an audiophile, but I just got the 3808ci and I have the Mythos 10 for my center and the Gems for surrounds right now. Will upgrade hopefully to some ST's, STS or One's down the road.
With the Audyssey setup it has made my system sound incredible.

I would highly recommend this unit. Not sure what you have on your short list, but I don't think you will be dissappointed with this one.

Happy shopping.

There isn't a "best receiver" for your proposed setup. There are many excellent options. Right now, I'd look at the Pioneer Elite SC-05/07 because they can be had at bargain prices from a few vendors (and I have a Pioneer bias ). Some people have found good deals on Onkyo, too, and many swear by them. Others prefer Harmon Kardon, Yamaha, Marantz, etc., etc. But the Denon 3808 is a fine choice, and you won't go wrong with it. Pick the one that has the features you want and you'll be pleased with any of them.

Exactly ... Pioneer Elite SC-05 is also one that I am considering. I have used pioneer in my car and absolutely loved them, so I think they should be good with the receiver too. Denon I have never used before but have always heard only good things about them.

This will help me decide either way

1) I watch lot of game/movies etc from my laptop connected to the TV ( Samsung 860). Will any of these receivers be able to enhance the video or audio quality of the media?

2) I also have have lot of foreign movies in my media collection stored as avi/h262 etc. I use the computer to play them and watch it on the tv. Iwould like to know will Denon or Pionner make any difference. Will I be able to connect my video & audio to receiver veor will have to continue using the current way of connection ( straight to TV and headphone out to AUX)

Thanks

I use a straight to TV connection from my Mac Mini, so I can't comment on this too much, at least not from experience. Both the 3800 and the 05 use DCDi, but the devil is in the details. Knowing which chip they use doesn't tell you too much, as some companies implement the same chip better than others. I have no idea which does it better in this case.

However, the Pioneer passes HDMI untouched. No processing is applied. I don't know for sure, but I have the impression that Denon does process HDMI signals.

It's my contention that a good TV is likely to do a better job of processing than any AVR. I'd rather send the "cleanest" possible signal to the TV and let the TV do the job it is designed to do. This works well with my Kuro, and I would expect it to with your Samsung 860 as well. I not only don't use the AVR's video processing feature even for analog sources, I turn it completely off, which reduces the heat output (and is the THX recommendation).

But those are just my opinions, and I recognize that others want video processing in their AVR's

The way I connect my computer is just as you do currently, except I run the sound through the TV first (only because it is convenient for me, not for any presumed benefit). So haven't tried running them through the AVR. I'm not absolutely certain either of them can pass a computer RGB signal, although I think they will. Obviously, if your computer can output a standard video signal, it would be no problem, as the AVR would "see" it like any other video source.

I need to get an idea of what the Nine sounds like since where I'm from (Asia), I was only able to demo the Mythos Two/Three on-walls, the Four and the STS speakers. The Two/Three sounded okay to me, the sound seems a bit recessed, while the Four sounded good, and the STS sounded great!

I even emailed DT regarding this and this is what they told me:

The Mythos Four sounds similar to the Mythos Two/Three speakers. (The tonal balance of the Mythos Nine is not very similar to the Mythos Four.) Except for the powered subwoofer built-into the Mythos STS tower, the Mythos Nine is really the top half of a Mythos STS tower.

The level of performance produced by a set of Mythos Nines and a SuperCube I/II would be in the same league as a set of Mythos STS towers.

Now this sounds very promising for the Nine but is this a good assessment of the performance of the Nine? Can anyone give me some input on this, someone with actual experience with the Mythos Nine on-walls?

I'd really appreciate it if any of you could help me out as I really need reassurance to its sound quality before shelling out.

Cheers

Can anyone help?

My dealer suggests I audition the STS with the built-in subwoofer turned OFF, and use a SuperCube I/II instead for the bass to get an idea of what the Nines with a subwoofer would sound like. What do you guys think?

I am a bit worried though that they would sound 'shut in' when wall-mounted. Chet mentioned in a response that they would produce sound with a bit of 'chestiness'. Can I fix that with the EQ of a AV receiver like the Pioneer Elite SC-07?

I need to make a decision very soon so any advise would be appreciated.

jhav, daved71: you guys have the setup I am looking at, can you give me an impression of how the systen performs with music/movie?

Thanks!

Nice thing about the Denon's you have the option of passing HDMI untouched/unprocessed or you can elect to use video processing.
And depending on the Denon model you can tweak the video processing per input....
