FWIW I really like the second one, but I don't think with the two there really is a "wrong choice" both will look very classy. The cabinets are looking nice, I really like the layout of that area.

Personally, I would have chosen the darker carpet, but that's just me (and my muddy dog). Howerver, I DO like the pattern, so either will look great.

Yeah, I'm not sure my stairs were installed straight along the wall. But given the waves in the rest of the concrete walls, it could be the wall. When I intended to hang drywall myself, I ripped furring strips to the exact depth to make a 1/2" sheet even with the upper half that was finished by the builder. EVERY ONE of them was a differnet depth. As the two layers of 5/8s were being installed, it occurred to me that I forgot to mention this to the contractor. They MUST have picked up on it though, because somehow or other they lined it up perfectly. And now that it is primed, it looks REALLY good.

The Athens gets my vote for having more contrast but both are nice. I couldn't recall the rest of your color scheme so I took a quick glance back a few pages but didn't find it. Can you describe it?

Yeah, I need to get my color choices posted.

The trim/cabinets will be cherry (with a clear coat, no stain), of course black (the ceiling/recliners,etc.) , the carpet listed ("Athens" by Masland) and a SW color called "Wall Street" -- I'll get a color palate posted at some point soon.

The 3rd color will be GOM fabric that I haven't narrowed down yet.

Everything is basically waiting on the trim/carpet..both of which are taking forever.

I'll try and get a pic up in a bit.

Ok, so I suck at updates.

Here's the planned color scheme (so far)

Black: Mickey Mouse Ears Black by Behr in flat (amazingly black paint)
HT recliners (Black Leather)
Screen Wall (black GOM/Velvet or something)

Non-Fabric Walls: Sherwin Williams Duration Matte Finish - Wall Street (a Dark gunmetallish grayish-blue)

Fabric Walls: TBA (still working on that)

Cherry: cabinets, baseboards/casings/crown

Flooring: Masland "Athens"

As far as updates go:

1. Painting: I've got almost everything painted. Even though Duration is supposed to be "1 coat" even over dark primer, it is taking 2 coats to get it just right. I've never been able to pain just a single coat with any brand of paint.

I need another gallon to finish a second coat on some of the soffits and around the cabinets.

2. Trim is starting today. I'll try to get some baseboards in as the mill called yesterday saying my order is ready. Stupid rain has kept me way behind, though.

3. We finalized the carpet. 142 sq yards sounds like a ton! Hopefully it should be in at the end of the week/early next week with the goal of having it installed next week.

I might actually meet my wife's request of having everything at least sitting downstairs before Thanksgiving!

I found it helpful to be working towards a deadline like that. Got me willing to do a little extra work in the mornings before work.

Progress Update! Last 1/2 of October (no specific days...a touch here and there...)

Painting

I went with Sherwin Williams color "Wall Street" in Duration Matte finish for walls that won't be 703/GOM.

2 coats over the 2 coats of primer and it looks great. Also VERY smudge resistant and cleans up like a breeze.

10/28 Progress Update:


For the 703/GOM covered walls, I needed to add 1 inch thick firring strips...the baseboard will attach to these, so in the end, the baseboard will be 1 inch from the walls and look flush with the 1 inch linacoustic/GOM.

Basic Idea:

I used 5/4 lumber which 1 inch thick and used for decking. It was 5 1/2 inches wide so I ripped it down by an 1 inch so it would be shorter than my baseboards.

When used with the fabric track, the baseboards will cover the small part of the track that otherwise would have been exposed. Thanks to Cathan for this neat idea!

10/29 - 11/1 Progress!


My cherry baseboard/casings came in a couple of weeks ago but I hadn't touched them. I finally started getting everything put up.

Special thanks to Harrison Millwork that gave me a great price!

I didn't take any specific pics of cutting/installing them...but here's some pics...

The double window was particularly time-consuming. I spent the better part of a day just doing this....double drywall really adds extra depth!

Interesting to see someone else using real wood grain for window boxes, door trim, baseboard, etc. I did my house trim in stained VGDF. Most just paint it white!

I agree. What color is the darker wall in the back. The natural wood contrasted on it looks exceptional. Great job.

Thanks guys!

I'll try to get a close-up/accurate representation of the colors in a few....

It was partly my wife's request. The rest of my house is standard white trim, etc. but I wanted to do something a little different. My cabinet maker gave me a great deal on the cherry cabinets and I wanted to tie the cabinets in with the rest of the HT/basement.

The wall color is "Wall Street" in matte finish by Sherwin Williams.

If I had anything to do over again, it would be to use real wood trim. I wouldn't mind taking out what I have and redoing it in wood, but my wife would have a fit

Oh No... I never read these posts before they are finished because I hate to wait to see them all. I like to sit down and read everything and look at pretty picture shows from start to finish....

I started reading with out knowing it wasn't finished... Oh well... Looks like i'll have to keep watching this thread now. The build looks great so far and I'm really jealous. I can't wait to get my first House and start looking at something like this. Keep building, its looking great.

Everyone is now caught up until today....

I had to clean like mad this morning before the carpet people got here. I had a sizable stack of scraps in the driveway that I also had to cut up to bag and throw out.

...now for....

Carpet!

I went with the one that most people liked from the choice earlier...It is Masland "Athens"

Here are some pics from installation today:

I went with moisture proof padding...It was a good deal more but it is also quite high quality. It makes all of the other carpet pads I've felt...inadequate.

They're going to finish the big sections today and come back tomorrow to wrap the stage and riser and do the stairs and equipment room. They say it'll be 2 full days for everything.

They were excited to do something like this as it isn't a typical installation...they said it is "challenging."

Love the carpet choice!!! It's definitely one of the exciting moments of the build, right there with hanging the PJ and screen. Hmm, how long before that?
