Adding a y splitter will not add db's. It is signal only. The amp output side is what adds db's.

Alright, I'll skip that then... Leaving work in 15 mins I will hopefully report back in a few hours :)

having a little issue and not sure how to isolate this or what might be the cause. my avr randomly turns itself off about twice daily. (after being on for a few hours at normal listening volume) so i have a new one on order, but i'm now wondering if it may be something else causing this behavior. there is a static type sound seemingly in all 3 tweeters. each tower and the center speaker. could a defective avr be the cause? could the cause of the avr issue be something wrong with the speakers? seems odd to me that all three speakers have static. though it seems to be only in tweeter area and not any other areas of the speakers. i hate to bring this up as its not overbearing, but i notice it and occasionally distracting. this is when watching satellite tv connected directly to tv set. (avr connected to tv through hdmi arc) so i tried to hear it while listening to a sacd on the bluray player, while not as easy to hear through the music, i do think its still there.

any ideas what the problem might be? or is the static type noise just it is what it is? (i have ultra sensitive hearing so it may just be me!! but i thought i'd check in to see if there might be something i'm overlooking? or if it could very well be the avr? or just garbage satellite tv? or interference from something?)

Alright I ran audyssey with the RCA plugged into the LFE and input jacks (separately). The input resulted in a low hum that randomly went on and off so that's a no go. The LFE slot seems to be ok. It's still not very powerful but it doesn't bottom out anymore. I will deal with this weak sub for a few months. Planning on grabbing a HSU VTF-15H unless I change my mind again, but I'm a fan of the look of them biggrin.gif

Thanks all

I would guess that it is an avr issue. Especially since it turns off on its own, sounds like a bad board inside.

In the manual setup while configuring levels I can barely even hear it unless I turn the gain all the way up and set the level on the reciever at like +10, but then it'll bottom out like crazy in movies.  Putting the gain at about 50% and level at 0 it still bottoms out at certain times. Like, I watched X-Men Origins today and when Wolverine jumped over the waterfall I paused and turned the sub off for the rest of the movie... It sounds awful so I dont know if I am doing something wrong or if this thing is just garbage now. I just have a RCA cable from the sub plug on AVR (x2000) to the LFE In jack on the sub. (thats all I need right?)

I've listened to a bit of music with the towers though and they sound good. I can see what everyone is talking about with the mids. I was a little worried they wouldn't have enough highs for me, but I honestly don't mind them one bit. I do think they could use some more bass though, but this sub is acting up!!! I didn't want to order a new one until next year, but now I may have to expedite that...

Any ideas?

Hey moussaka, Daren from RBH/EMP here. I know this isn't our subwoofer, but make sure you aren't stacking filters. In other words, if your AV processor or receiver is already filtering out the high frequencies to the subwoofer (via low-pass crossover in your processor's or receiver's bass management), make sure to defeat the low-pass crossover on the subwoofer. Try defeating one of the crossovers (if both are engaged), and see if the sub wakes up. Let me know how that goes.

ok thank you! i'll just wait for the new avr. makes sense that its not a speaker issue since its the same on all 3.

Yeah...the vtf-15h will be slightly better biggrin.gif

Regarding what was mentioned earlier, turn that top CROSSOVER knob on the back of your sub...what looks like all the way to the left (highest crossover point). I know you can change the LFE crossover within the Denon, but I believe it defaults to 120hz. Do that and try to find the LFE x-over (put it around 80hz and play with it until it sounds the best to your ears).

Yeah sounds like an AVR issue. Trust me...I know it can be frustrating. I'm still trying to figure out if my SPL meter or my AVR is messed up. Have a few months left on the AVR warranty so I need to figure it out asap

yes indeed... especially for someone new to all this! difficult to identify is it avr, cable, connector, electrical outlet, tv source, blah blah!!!!

hope you get your problem sorted out, easily and soon!

It looks like my bookshelf speakers are on their way (an 18 lb Fedex package, so I'm assuming those are the E5Bi's). However, I had ordered the towers on the 25th of Nov and no sign of them still. frown.gif I bought receivers for the living room and bedroom, bought a blu ray player, bought speaker wires and banana plugs, and also bought a bunch of cds. Can't wait to get the towers.

I guess I'll ask you guys this while I wait for the towers. Do I need to get anything else? I have hdmi cables to connect the blu ray player to the receiver and the receiver to the TV. When (and why) do you use RCA inputs/outputs? If I need to use those, what kind of wires/cables do I need to get? Also, I have an old JVC DVD player that I want to use to play cds in the bedroom. However, I want to use the DAC in my Yamaha RX-V375. So I guess I need to have a digital out going from the DVD player to the receiver? What cables do I need for that?

Your towers might be on their way too. I ordered two pairs of bookshelves and a center. My tracking info I just received has this on the tracking page:

Weight 18 lbs
Total shipment weight 50 lbs / 22.7 kgs
Total pieces 3

So ... I'm hoping / expecting all will be delivered on Saturday biggrin.gif

I had placed separate orders on two separate days. The Fedex tracking page says 1 total piece and 18 lbs. The order number is also provided and it confirms that this was my order placed on Dec 2 for the bookshelf speakers. So the order I placed on Nov 25th still hasn't shipped and those are the towers I've been waiting eagerly for. :(

Well, at least I can set up my bookshelf speakers in my bedroom on Friday which is better than nothing at this point! :)

Turns out that I just didn't receive tracking info from Fedex, my towers are already in the leasing office!! Can't wait to get back home and call a couple of friends to help me haul them up to my apartment!

Brian's been great throughout this process. Always responds to queries within 24 hours. Customer service is king.

I know how you feel! I've had a new Panasonic ST60 for a few weeks, added a receiver + bluray player over the last week or so, but am still stuck using built-in speakers. /shudder

^ Nice VS85. Do I sense a half day for you?? lol

I still haven't received anything notifying me of the shipment of my 2 e1010i's

BUT..that's okay. No hurry. I know they're busy. And they just might be sending me a goody to play with biggrin.gifbiggrin.gif

I have this coming, a ton of stuff from Autogeek.net on my porch as I type this (griots 6" polisher& tons of products to add to the tons I already have lol), Amazon orders (car stuff, x-mas gifts, etc). Fun week! I was hoping the e1010's would get here this week, but oh well. I'd rather them focus on newer customers first

In case anyone isn't over at one of the 'other' audio/video forums, here's a review that someone just wrote about the e1010i:

I did the old sub crawl and ended up putting the unit where the previous Velodyne sub was located. The volume level is at 50%, the crossover is set to 80Hz and I ran the Yamaha YPAO equalization program.

I’m a bit conflicted about this sub and a lot of it has to do with is that I keep comparing it to the SVS PB12-NSD in my main setup. It’s not a fair comparison; spec, size and price wise. The biggest problem for me is the room; a 14’x14’ nightmare where space is at a minimum, for various reasons. Realistically 2 of these subs would be optimal but I just don’t have the space to make it happen unless I remove the existing entertainment furniture and get some A/V racks. Two high-end 8”s or one 10”/12” sealed unit(s) would be perfect (SVS, HSU, Rythmik, etc.). But perfection doesn’t come cheap, so we make compromises. When I look and listen to it objectively though, as much as one can, I’m very happy. The sub shines with music, even with hip-hop or dance; very detailed if not teeth rattling. My standard sub reference music is Bob Marley and it passed with flying colors, be it at low or high volumes. As I write this I’m listening to Bowie’s Suffragette City and it is kicking a$$!!! Trevor Bolder never sounded better. No bloat just that bass guitar driving the runaway train that was the Spiders. Now it’s De-Phazz with that jazz-lounge vibe reverberating in my spine … again a very musical sub.

The only HT test I put it thru was watching an on-air cable broadcast of Thor (3.1 setup) and it was more than acceptable compared to my older unit, which had the rumble & shakes but not much definition. But like I said previously, music is where this unit earns its keep for me.

I would definitely recommend the 1010i but it may falter in a bigger room but at this price you can’t go wrong and the WAF is very high. She, who is Queen of All She Surveys, tried to convince me to put it in the main room but I politely declined diplomatically, pointing out that the veneer didn’t match the Focal’s standard finish. I do know at this price ($250) and dimensions you’re not likely to find a better sounding sub, especially for music.
I’ve included some pics

Gosh, I would hate to have my system in an apartment... My neighbors would certainly dislike me. I think I would be spending money on high end headphones!

I started building my system at 15 and it had to go through a period where I had it in my first apartment. I all but had to disable the sub, and always tried to be careful about volume level. Overall that wasn't the best three years for improving my system. I had much smaller speakers at the time then I do now (I upgraded to my EMP's after getting into a house) but still it was sad to hold my system back like that.

Just wondering if anyone here has demoed a set of Polk Rti12. I notice our local Fry's has them on sale and wondering how it compares to the E55Ti. Also, have anyone regret of purchasing the E55ti or have traded up to something else or better?

I'm starting to wonder if I got a bad RCA cable. I was fiddling with my HTPC connections last night and just nudged the sub RCA coming out of the AVR and it mad a horrible buzzing sound (out of the sub). I bought this one - can I test with a different one that is attached to some component cables? One of the red/white audio ones I mean or does it even matter if it is video or audio? I'm guessing it will work. Something still just doesn't seem right with this sub lol

No. That's sounds about right. It actually lets you know your cable is good and the sub is good.
Have you plugged it into a different outlet yet? Just spitballin' here...

Yeah, the first time I had it plugged in it was on an extension cord to a different outlet because I was going to do a sub crawl. Then I could barely hear it so I decided it wasn't worth it and plugged it in with everything else lol. If the different RCA doesn't do anything I will just accept defeat and wait until I can order a new one :)

I have heard the Polk rti and own the emps... Granted, I did not a/b them, but felt the emp were better. However, my opinion don't matter...
Alright, swapped cables with the same result. I turned some knobs and adjusted crossovers and i can live with it for a few months lol.

Thanks again everyone for all the input and ideas

So you can't get your sub to play at regular volumes or work at all or what?

I just looked up your sub and the only place you need to plug an rca cable in is the one LFE input on the top right of the rca posts. So that means that you only need one cable. That plugs into the sub output on the avr as you already know. Make sure the phase on the back of the sub is on the correct setting as that will matter. Also, make sure the crossover is all the way up on the sub.

Does this help?

Thats where the RCA is plugged into. Crossover is at max, phase is at 0 - I dont know how I know whether this is right or not. I'm a little reluctant to mess with it anymore because I finally got it to a somewhat acceptable level and it isn't bottoming out anymore. Plus in a couple months time I'm actually going to buy a sub so I think I can live with it for a little bit lol

I posted this in the receivers forum as well but since some of this could also be relevant to Emp Tek speakers, I'll ask you guys the same questions here:

Just got my Emp Tek towers (for a stereo set up in the living room). I hooked them up to my Yamaha RX-V475 receiver. Ran YPAO. Some results were displayed (distances), the distances seemed off by a couple of inches but I read on this forum that these are not physical distances. So I think that should be okay. I checked the speaker configuration in setup.

1) I see that crossover is set to 90Hz. I do not have a subwoofer. Hopefully that number does nothing in this case. Correct me if I'm wrong, do I need to change it?

2) I checked the levels. Both my speakers are set to 0 dB. Is that normal? Also what does 0dB really mean here given that the absolute threshold of hearing is 0dB at 1KHz?

3) EQ select reads "PEQ". What is PEQ?

So the only thing I saw the YPAO do was get speaker distances. It did not seem to set levels (unless 0dB for both is what it ended up setting). Am I doing this wrong? Is there anything else I need to do?

I played some CDs using my blu ray player. Piano music sounds great (but it sounded great out of the box before I ran YPAO). Orchestral music isn't great (and it didn't sound great before I ran YPAO). It is late at night here and I live in an apartment, so I've been playing at low volumes. So I'm sure this will change tomorrow when I'm able to play them louder.

I'll let the speakers break in for a while, but I'm wondering if I am using the AVR correctly.

Thanks.
