The kind of panel buzz I have is oddly not distance dependent. That is, it's about as loud at 12 feet as at 1 foot. The panel acts to focus and project the noise to a specific location--dead center in front of the middle of the panel.
I'm in the minority, but I do find it annoying, leading me to have to sit off-axis. I think there are a number of variables that determine how much buzz one hears--differences between panels, one's high frequency hearing ability, the location of the plasma (i.e., if it's mounted directly in front of and facing the seating position), and ambient noise levels.
If you want more information, there's an extensive thread about the buzzing issue.
