The intensity level you maintained in addressing "every" detail deserves commendation. You began this thread shortly after I began lurking on AVS, so this has been a daily read for me. I have thouroughly enjoyed observing you and the group in the forum "comprehensively" hammer out the finer points of your design.

However, I must say with your proclamation of "Finally Done", (which could also read "Finely Done") I feel like someone has just cancelled my Readers Digest subscription.

I'm know you will recoup years of enjoyment in return for all your efforts.

Well, Shawn, congratulations.

I chimed in a couple of times back in January when you first started this thread and then neglected to check back in. I figured maybe by now the drywall would be done, then I saw your post in the screen wall thread. Wow. Started reading the whole thread last night and just finished. Fantastic job. Wish I could have kept up with you (me reading, you working) during the whole progress.

I know at one point in the thread you listed your room dimensions, but wasn't sure if that deducted the 3' or so for the false wall. What are the final useable dimensions? What distance is your seating? What distance from the screen will your front row be (when obtained)? Have you put any temporary seating at the front row location and watched anything to see how it looks?

Also, you need to update your first post since the lens and lettering is done. Slacker.

I'm thinking about buying an RS20. I was planning to get a 135" diagonal Stewart 16:9 1.3 gain screen. I was afraid that I was pushing with just this screen size. But mine is much smaller that yours (54 square foot and higher gain). Are you happy with the brightness of your setup? If you are, then I know mine would work out fine.

I'm extremely happy with my screen size and brightness. I'm pretty easy to please though I can tell when an image is too dim. For instance, my former sony vpl-vw40 at 120" looked dim, atleast compared to the JVC. I have zero regrets about choosing a scope screen and even fewer than zero regrets going as big as I did! I'm at about 500 hrs on my bulb and still looks very bright to me. The screenshots I posted, if anything make it look less vibrant than it is in person. I also have a completely light controlled bat cave, so it makes it a lot easier to get the most out of the setup.

But here are the "specs" on what the brightness would be in my setup and your new setup. Keep in mind these are based upon a new bulb. Your average movie theater will be about 16fL.

With my 16:9 image at 112" wide, I should be getting about 25fL. And then the lens takes care of the stretching to make it 2:35. i am not sure how that affects the fL, but I do know it's 20-25% brighter than if I had zoomed instead. So lets do it that way. The zoomed out to 150" wide 2:35 image results in 18fL. Then we add that ~22% back on for the anamorphic lens and I'm at about 22fL.

If it helps, here's the same breakdown for your screen..
With a 135" diag 16:9 image at 1.3 gain, your brightness will be 16fL.

Your specs were based on middle range, 17' throw, so adjust the specs with your real throw. The RS10 is actually a little brighter than the rs20, but doesn't have as good of CR and CMS.

Before I got the lens, I just "zoomed" to 150", which still looked great to me. I had a feeling that as the bulb accumulated hours though, I would have noticed a dimmer screen. That's one of the reasons I went with the lens, which I can now say is quite a bit brighter than the zoom method.

Thanks Brad!

Sorry for taking away your readers digest! But I'll still be posting, and I guess by AVS standards I'm not really "done" since no one is every really done I just feel like I'm done, since the sign was the last item on my list of things to do before I could just relax and enjoy the room.

I'm also open to suggestions on improvements I could make on the room, hall, door, gear etc. So if anyone has suggestions, or if Big has any napkins for me, I'm all eyes

Thanks! Drywall?! Wow

Ok the false wall is built on a line that gives 30" behind the screen, plus 4.5" for the 2x4 and fabric frame. My "raw" dimensions are 14.5 x 21.5, so my usable dimensions in front of the screen are about 14' 6" x 18' 7".

My main row distance is about 16' from the screen, and my first row would be about 10.5'. I haven't done anything with the front row yet, and actually my wife and I are debating on whether to even add one. I know it would make it look fuller, but I don't think they'd ever get used and it would be just a distraction in my viewing range to the screen. I dunno, I haven't made up my mind yet on that

Ah yes thanks, I'm a slacker, I'll get to work

But the room looks so EMPTY without a front row...

My guess is that you'd be sitting in the front pretty regularly after putting it in... it's amazing how quickly you get used to a larger picture...

Sounds like a plan, I'll bring the movies, you bring the snacks

Next one I will really try to go to (or host )!

The lens is on a timeshare program, 1 week each member

Looking at this picture, does this mean when you are watching thing in 16:9 on CBS that the CBS symbol will be cut in half essentially?

If I watch it like that yes, it cuts off the logo like you said. I can also just watch in normal 16:9:

Or stretched with no cropping. So far I like the one that cuts off the logo the best. But I'm still playing around with it

I thought maybe it was your stretching that was making Joaquin Rivers look so FAT. But then once you showed us the normal 16:9 view, I realized it was just Joaquin Rivers that was making Joaquin Rivers look that way.

Who is Joaquin Rivers?

Did you mean Joaquin Phoenix?

And if so, that's not him. The guest on Letterman is Matthew Perry.

Yes, of course...my brain was crossing Joaquin and his brother. God, you're right...of course Joaquin doesn't go anywhere without his fake beard these days. But I swear that profile of Matt Perry looks like Joaquin Phoenix...why is Matt Perry so angry? And HE got fat too!

So today I was thinking what my next upgrade would be, if I did an upgrade. And I started thinking about my system. Like I think my sound is awesome, and I don't feel any need or itch to upgrade anything there. And I love my picture quality too. But I guess if I had to choose the next upgrade, it would be the projector. I really like it now, but just wonder how green the grass would if...it's a sickness, I tell you. Don't call my therapist yet though, it's just theoretical right now

The only problem is, I think the next level up that would be any noticeable improvement are the 3 chip dlps I could get a used one, but it's still several times the cost of the jvc.

Anyone have any opinions on the Sim2 C3X 1080?

I always did like the SIM2 line . Before the RS20 I was all set to get the D80E.

Shawn you can't think about HT2.0 until you get your other row of seats.

And with it stretched like this, is the content a little wider than when viewing 16:9 (image is short and fat)? Or is it stretched in equal proportion?

It's cropped instead of stretched, so it's basically the same proportion, but it is stretched a tad, about 5% or something. Just watched Rescue Me (one my new favorite shows, I laugh the entire time!) and CSI using this method and I like this method for sure over the 16:9 size.

I just searched your thread about it. Nice to know we have a resident expert among us who has seen both the jvc and a Sim2 . I saw something like it wouldn't work with scope, is that right? And what's the difference between the D80E and the c3x?
Thanks. This information was really helpful. This settles my fears that my screen is too big. I went back and read that you went with the RS10 instead of the RS20 because to plan to upgrade eventually. That's what I think I will do too. I might as well save the money and get a slightly brighter projector too, even though I shouldn't need the extra light.

I got one new pic using Ruben's method!

However, in other (bad) news, I moved a chair down on the first level and sitting in the first level doesn't seem as "sweet" of a spot as the second level. But more importantly, I can't see over the backs of the chair if sitting in the second level, it blocks the view.

For some reason, I thought my seats were 36" tall, but after measuring they are really 45" tall, and 35" tall reclined. When they are reclined, I can see past them fine. My field of view starts getting blocked at about 36", so it just makes it, reclined. My current riser is 7" tall. I guess I should have done more like 17"!

So my options are to either

-not get a second (front) row of seats
-get a second row of seats that are shorter than my current ones
-get a sofa or something like that
-get a second row but keep them reclined

Keep in mind this second row is for looks only, I'm not going to be using it.

I know I could also rebuild my riser, but I'm not tearing up my carpet and doing all of that! And my screen is about 4" from the top of the ceiling, so I don't have much room to raise it up.

So given that, what should I do?!
