Best Room in the House - Page 54

I think Shawn would reduce his GC to tears if he tore down that well designed shelf. I don't care who he sends the shelf to I want the JVC. I think the forum deserves to have a first hand report of the JVC/OPPO 83 connection. I won the lottery today and my name came up in the first solicitation of offers today now that the OPPO blu is ready for the public.

It's time to take the projectors, mount and lens down. Take the panel fabric panel down and tear the shelf down.... I know it's kind of extreme, but by the looks of it you now need to balance the shelf off as the lens is offset to one side on the proj. By the looks of the first set of pics you posted you need to add about 6 inches to each side to keep things centered.

At the same if you end up doing something like this, then you might as well see if you can make it so it gets mounted above the shelf after all.

Since you are using the Chief mount, you might be able to use metal brackets like we had discussed earlier to mount the lens vs. using a wooden shelf.

Of course I may be totally off base here about tearing down the shelf, but I know how you really don't want to finis so why not add the new project

I'm not tearing down the shelf!! I may be able to mount it in the shelf with an idea I had. I'm gonna measure it today. To the lens metal mounting brackets instead of the mdf, what material did you suggest I use?

If worst comes to worst, I'll call the GC and make it look good

He,he, not trying to rock the boat. Thought at the very least it would make you laugh at best considered to be brilliant

In any event it was already back more than 10 pages on post 1264 (your thread grows like wildfire) where it was mentioned about strangbrew's lens mount combo.

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showp...postcount=1264

Link to his thread with the pic of the slotted L brackets and chief mount.

Very clean to do it this way IMO.

Although, now that I look at his pics I just remembered the projector lens is centered, so you'll have to figure out some sort of offset or mount the brackets to the shelf or something.

You know if you'd quit upgrading even before really moving into the room, you wouldn't have these problems

But seriously, mdf is not known for its holding power, so I would go with something else.

GT

Edit: Oman and I typing at the same time
I was talking about the fact the PJ is now off center on the shelf...strange brews idea is perfect for the lens, but everything else in your room is dead on and now the PJ looks out of whack, I know its not ideal but I am sure the Sim has lens shift so can't you center the PJ on the shelf and shift the picture? its only a couple of inches, not like its 2 feet...

Ok Oman, I'm gonna try and figure something out thanks

GT - thanks. I'll see if it has horizontal lens shift. Something tells me it wont have it

Ok so either way, I'll redo it and do without the mdf and then try to figure out a way like strangbrew did.

So I'm thinking of trying to make a stand for it that will sit in the shelf. Someone suggested I try 2x4's. Obviously that wouldn't look good, but what if I wrapped them in GOM

Basically he said make a bottom plate out of plywood or something, then take 2 - 2x4's and use for supports and then run a 2x4 as the top mounting position (along wiht blocking for support).

I dunno if it'll work, but I'm willing try it

Hard to believe, but looking online at the specs it only lists vertical...hard to believe all the stuff it does have that you probably will never use and yet you need to place it a couple inches off center and your screwed...

At first I thought you meant an upside down U around the PJ with the "legs coming down the sides of the PJ, which would work but it looks like that right side of the Sim goes out past the inside of the upper shelf area...

are you thinking of a C shaped contraption with the vertical part of the C on the back wall? If so, I'm not so sure about that, the downward weight of the PJ (and the lens)on the 2X cantilevered out there would not be real stable or secure long term, unless you built the H3LL out of it and were able to fasten the back to the rear wall...

If you want to keep the box with the gold, fluted accents, how about flipping it upside down so the longer shelf is on the top? You could also make it longer/deeper to accomodate the projector and lens without changing the aesthetics.

Hey Shawn,

How sturdy, and what kind of backing, does the upper part of the shelf have that connects to the bottom of the soffit? It looks like if there was solid material in there, you could fasten a board(I would use solid Oak) or a piece of steel to cantilever forward to hold the PJ. The it would be able to get airflow around it and might be able to get past that right side which is in the way...

If the board were thick and wide enough and secured properly, it would hold the 25# Sim and the lens no prob...and if you used like 5/4 board, you could just paint it black and trim it on the edges with the small chair rail and it would match perfectly...

I was thinking if you make a bigger top and add more fluted sides for support you could hang the projector form the top.
The other option would be to lower the shelf make new taller sides and bigger top to mount the projector too.
I do think and redesign of the shelf is the only option if the projector has to be that off center. Maybe wider and taller to give more room for hanging it off the top of the shelf.

You need another Big napkin plan

Yes, I saw your email post in the Oppo EAP thread. Congrats! Not sure how patient you can be. I'm just waiting for the general release to the public and then I can give you the skinny on the RS20/Oppo combo. I should probably check out some SDs in the meantime to accurately report about the perceived superior upscaling ability of the Oppo vs the BD55.

That may be an option if I can't figure this thing out.

I was thinking the same thing, I'm gonna look and see. Worst case is I mess up my shelf and the GC has to rebuild a new one

I'm hoping I don't have to do a redesign, but I might. I wanna try and exhaust all my options first.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions so far. I went to Lowes and got some supplies, I'm gonna try and rig something up

LOL, Just use the MDF shelf and bolts, nuts and washers to secure the mount, take that steel back.

And i just looked close, that's a heck of a lot of steel!! For one little PJ, Geez Shawn, its only 25#

And my wife would kill me if she saw all that oily steel on our beautiful carpet!!!
You did get a lot of steel there... Hopefully your solution works out for you. Sometimes it's the simple things which are hard to figure or see until it smacks you in the face.

Hey, obviously Shawn is man with his priorities in the right place...This stuff is critical and he won't be able to focus properly on that hobby called work.

Man, I have heard the term no theater is ever done, but this cant count for that. This is simply a case of some madman that just cant be pleased. His theater looks perfect to everyone, yet he feels there is something wrong and feels the need to go and change things. Shawn, if it aint broke dont fix it. I am afraid you will go through all this effort to try and improve on what you have and you wont like it. Leave it be for a while, relax and just enjoy the theater a moment. I mean if the CBS logo sliced in half does not bother you when watching 16:9 content through your lens then what is the big deal with this shelf?

Geez

There is nothing wrong with striving for perfection, and if the Shawn's got the time and money to do so then who cares? and we get to watch/help a high level theater be created!

I've seen a lot of theaters that look hokey cause the person gave up and said "hey its going to be dark anyway!" that are just a little time and effort away from being a really great room, So why spend all this time, money, and hard work and not have it look awesome?

Oh man and I am relieved!! I was really getting worried about the decision to get this projector since a lot of the ideas involved ripping down the shelf. Basically I took GarenT's idea (thank you) of a 2x4 as the top mounting plate for the projector mount. And then I made two side supports, to make it into a stand. Then I cut it all to fit and screwed it in place, it's not going anywhere now. I can't believe I didn't think of this and wish I didn't drill holes into my shelf bottom!!

I also had to rebuild the shelf projection for the anamorphic lens, but I got it all figured out.

Here's the fluted air vents per Big's design. I installed the mount and the 2x4 so that the rear air vents on both sides lined up perfectly with these air vents.

Anyway, all that steel I posted a pic of earlier...$200!

All I used to make this was 1 2x4 and 1 can of black spray paint. The screws I already had. Total cost... $3.00

I'm taking the metal back tomorrow. I'm really happy that I was able to do it, I wasn't happy at all with it mounted to the bottom like it was. So thank you all very much for the help!!! Now I'm gonna program my harmony rf receiver for the projector and get that all set, clean up and watch a movie

In the next few days I'll have to patch up those holes I made in the shelf bottom and repaint.
Looks great Shawn, good job. Hope I didn't sway you the wrong way with the metal, but you worked it out in the end. Enjoy.

Pics are really dartk.Did you take the other pj down? If so, I thought you were going to use both?

You are a lucky man to have the finances to keep going like you do...Proud for ya.

Oh and how bout some of them pics showing the same scenes as you had with the RS10 w/ an w/o lens it will be a great comparison for those wondering about how much more performance and PQ you get for more $$$
