Subtitles in Letterbox - Page 2

The preferable solution would be to allow us to move the subtitles anywhere around the picture, change their size, their font, and their color.

...something x264 Blu-ray encodes can already do. Once again the 'legitimate' media is behind the curve :P

I much prefer subtitles that are place near the character speaking. This standard "put them at the bottom of the screen" ******** needs to stop.

I forget what movie we watched the other night, but the subtitles were placed near the character speaking. When the person speaking was at right of screen, the subtitles were positioned near that person and vice versa for the other speaking actor.

That's so much better and it keeps your eyes on the action, instead of below it.

If you are trying to recreate the movie experience at home (isn't that the idea of Home Theater?) - the subtitles MUST be placed in the picture area. Back in the late 80's - when letter box was starting to become mainstream (via laserdisc) - I preferred the subs in the black bar. With the small TV's of the time (26-40") it made them easier to read. But that was 20 years ago. Now w/ HD and our super huge screens - subtitles in the black bar is like putting a screen door inside a submarine (pure nonsense)

The studios better get their act together regarding subtitles.

1% of 1% of 1% of 1% have 2.35.1 projector home theater setups like a handful of people here on AVSforum. It's ridiculous to cater to them.

Putting subtitles in the letterbox bar is a real problem for a percentage of viewers who are no longer able to watch those movies. Putting subtitles in the movie image is not a problem for anyone. Everyone will be able to watch the movie, and less than 1% of 1% of 1% of 1% of 1% of viewers will be upset about it. And even those people will get over it after about 30 seconds.

So who is it more ridiculous to cater to?

I have the new Dances with wolves german disc, which looks superb. The subtitles when they appear are split- the first line is in the picture, the second line in the black area. I have a scope screen using the zoom method, which means zooming in a touch , not ideal.

It's more than just affecting CIH people, a lot of us also view the letter box bars as a void that are not part of the picture, so it's jarring when half of the subtitle all of a sudden appears to float in the darkness below the picture.

Are they forced subs with the English soundtrack? I love this movie but might have to bit my lip and wait.
Thanks

Some (including myself) have done this "LINK" so as not to be distracted by the poor black level of the bars.
Unfortunately when masking the black bars you will no longer see subs, although actually its opened my eyes to how god awful they were in the first place.

the subtitles should be at imaging area, not the lower black bar.For 2 reasons.1.It is more like true movie experience in the theater.2.people who used cinemascope screen 2.35:1 will get this benefit.Warner Bros.and Sony,Columbia please change your policy about this issue like Fox,Universal,Paramount/Dreamwork(they did since HDDVD).

I assume you aren't watching on a constant height setup.

For people who do the subtitles not being in the frame is a mess.
