I don't think anything Sony belongs on this list, because of non-defeatable backlight autodimming, and intentional blurring (resolution reduction).

Also, take that C-net list with a grain of salt, it doesn't list TVs they did not review, which includes the a850.

The A850 is quite similar in picture quality to the A750 and A650, both of which CNET reviewed (and liked).

So it's probably fair to say that they dig the A850/A860 too.

Everyone needs to see the latest Mitsubishi Diamond Series LT-52246 , hard to find a review, but I own it and picked it over a XBR6. Definitely one of the best LCDs on the market.
The only better I have seen are the LED backlight lcds and the Pioneer Elite Kuros.

Agreed there, but it still doesn't change the list. You could slot it in where the 750 or 650 is, but it's not a true list.

My list puts the XBR8/950 at the top, followed by the 850/750 and XBR6.

any toshiba's in the top 5 or 10?

Meh, don't care. Sammy 650/750/850 Series are all about the same. 850's thinner. Yay.

True dat, but what about the Pioneer Kuros?

LCD Forum =)

Personally, I love the kuros but they feel so dim to me compared to LCDs. I like the LCD look, which is why I went that route (a850 - couldn't justify the 950 at the time, maybe next set). IMO though, making a list without price constraints isn't reflective of the real world. Not everyone is going to buy the Elite kuro at however much they cost, or the 55" 950, or the XBR8 at their big costs. Real world list I think the 850/750 and the XBR6 are at the top of the LCD world (for now) and the Panasonic plasmas are at the top of the Plasma world. Without cost restraints? XBR8 and Elite Kuro.

are you putting the samsung over the sony xbr?

Charlie didn't specify a budget, he just asked what the top sets were.

But I would agree with all of your picks. That is pretty much the way it stacks up.

Asking about a Plasma in an LCD forum?!?! Just kidding...

Me Personally, I would rank the Kuro #1, but it just depends on what type of picture you like.

1. Kuro
2. XBR8/Samsung 950
3. Samsung 850/750/650
4. Panasonic 800 series

I personally liked the 850 better than the XBR6...and the XBR8 better than the 950. I LOVE how thin the 850 is...just gorgeous.

For me, the Sammy 650/750/850 are about equal to the XBR6. Was very impressed by all of them.

Also... the better LG sets deserve more love than they're getting. Their best is almost up there with Sony and Samsung.

Toshiba and Sharp are good too, not all that far behind (but just enough so that I wouldn't want one).

I like Panny plasmas too, but they are a tiny bit dim and a tiny bit soft. Their bang-for-the-buck is hard to beat tho'.

These "best" threads are meaningless until someone actually looks at the options then has specific questions. Go look at them then come back with questions.

Only tvs reviewed were rated. They actually had a recent review of the 46xv545u but I wasnt really impressed with the review. The reviewer writes:

"The bad:
Inaccurate primary color of green and cyan; subpar uniformity; proprietary upconversion circuit introduces edge enhancement; lackluster design"

Subpar uniformity? Virtually every lcd tv on the market including the ones on his list suffer from this including a lot of the samsung and sony tvs. Its their panel in the toshiba.

The proprietary upconversion circuit he is referring to is the srt feature. He obviously didnt know how to use it. It can introduce noticeable edge enhancement when your setting is too high but in moderation it does improve 480/720 dvd picture.

Lackluster design? Why because it doesnt have toc ( which a lot of people hate), or scarlet around bezel ? It has a very nice black relatively thin bezel. Whats wrong with that? The controls are easily accessible on the side and you can actually see them to use them unlike the samsung 630 I had.

Here is something else he wrote:

"As do most LCD HDTVs available in 2008, the 46XV545U has a native resolution of 1080p. However, at this screen size it's very difficult to tell the difference between 1080p and lower resolutions. "

That is a ridiculous statement- is he blind?

So I think if you dont deduct points for what should be positives the 545 may have made it on the list.

I was thinking the same thing.... I had the 850 and the xbr in my place. To my eyes xbr was far superior. Lot of ppl say that xbr doesnt look right next to a sammy 850, its called a natural picture!!!
It's hard to make a straight list. Some TVs do certain things better than others.

- Samsung A650/A750/A850 seem to have better blacks and more accurate colors compared to Sony XBRs, but the XBRs seem to look more natural and overall sharper and crisper.
- Sony's motion interpolation is more subdued and pleasing, while Samsung's is more almost too smooth even on LOW (back in the 1009FW).

However, the LED models XBR8 and A950 look amazing. I would definitely put those at the top. Especially Sony with BE2PRO DRC.

I have a Sony now, and it's going back to the store because of the two issues I mentioned. I will replace it with something (haven't decided yet), but it won't be Samsung because Samsung screens are too glossy for my particular needs.

Try exchanging your t.v. Cause the intentional blurring problem doesnt exist on my t.v, i even posted the pictures on that forum. Everything is very clear on my t.v, i even tried that halftone picture. Check your settings on the autodimming, because you can get it to a point where its not even noticeable. Now its a different story if you are looking for it.

I'm not really sure what we are ranking them the "top" of, but I will just take a shot in the dark:

1: 55A950
2: 55XBR8(is it a 55")
------------------------------------------------------------------------
3: 52A850(although I guess it has problems with flashlighting and clouding)
4: 52A750(what I have )
5: 52A650 or A630(depending on your needs)
6: 52XBR6(truthfully probably every bit as good as 3-5)

1-2 are interchangeable
3-6 are interchangeable as well

Terrible if true. But normally, there's some way to turn all of the "enhancement" settings off. I don't know if that is the case here...
