Thanks for clearing that up! My current economic situation won't allow me to make a purchase decision until November anyway. I currently have a 56" JVC FC-97 (rear projection LCoS) with which I'm extremely happy. The only con I really have against this set is its depth. It's 17" deep and with our living room arrangement, it projects far enough into the seating area so as to make it a bit of an awkward, and bulky intrusion into the room.
Most importantly for me, the viewing angles of the outer two seating positions are pretty much rendered useless. Of course due to the nature of rear screen projection, these two positions would get more washout than I could accept even if the set were only 7" deep.
My plans are to move this set into our rec-room (where to my wife's delight the "Rock Band" and MS Steering Wheel paraphenalia would go with it) and replace it with an LCD HDTV. What I'll have a problem reconciling is anything less than a 56" screen. I've been conditioned by the one I have. I think I could console myself with 55", but anything less than that will be too much of a concession.
One thing I'm going to have to keep in mind here is that when I go with a flat screen LCD display, I'm going to be pushing the screen front approximately a foot closer to the front wall of the living room. While this suits my wife's decor better, it's going to push the screen further away from the sofa and recliner. That 55" display is going to seem even smaller with that extra foot.
The price/performance ratio of the Vizio 550 and 551's is just something I can't ignore though. I was very impressed with the image quality I saw on the 550. It's on par, if not better, than sets costing $300 to $500 more, IMO.
Once I get above a 55" LCD, the costs start escalating disproportionately, so my budget will dictate that I stick with 55". I'm pretty hand with woodworking, so if I have to build a false top for my entertainment center to hide my objections to the sets aesthetics, so be it. A lot can change between now and November, so it's not worth getting my panties in a wad over now. I must confess though, JVC 56" FC-97 is making that wait very tolerable
