2009 Vizio XVT Series: 240Hz, USB input, LED backlight [NO PRICE TALK] - Page 164

Looking for some feedback, trying to help a friend out. I gave him a USB stick formatted FAT32 with 16gb of various movies on it, most with .avi extension. I plugged into the left side of the set and the menu comes up but I get "codec not supported" yet we are getting audio. Tried several of the movies and same issue.

So I renamed the movies .wmv or mpg and still the same issue as the set recognizes the true ext, plays audio but no video. I believe he is on original firmware possibly? The set was bought at a Canadian Costco around July10 VF551XVT-C (assuming the C at end stands for Canadian model?)

Does the set need to have firmware updated as it states in manual it can play video files??

The problem with how the 'smart dimming' is working is that first of all, as you can see from my video, it cuts the picture when there IS something on the screen, but it thinks it's too dark to matter. I had a DVD paused on text fading up during a movie trailer, which the LEDs would go completely out but they'd come on when I turned on the player's on-screen display since that was brighter. A black frame is never going to naturally look exactly the same as a screen powered off- if it wasn't noticeable, I wouldn't be complaining about it. It's especially annoying during credit sequences when text fades up and out repeatedly- when the text is onscreen, the background is just a bit above black, but then when the text fades out the lights go completely out, then on again when the next name fades up.

Vizio is going to replace my set anyways with a 553- since next week is a holiday it'll probably come the week after. I'm hoping it won't have the same problem, though I don't know what other choice I'll have if it does. I've read the contrast ratio on it is slightly better than the 552, but I'm a bit afraid they may have cut some corners- already noticed it doesn't have an S-Video jack like the 552 does. (I rarely use it except with a couple old game systems- will have to check to see if S-Video really makes a difference with those on this TV.) I would've been fine keeping the 552 and just wait for a software fix for the dimming problem, but the rep at Vizio thinks this'll be easier so I can't argue too much with that.

Hey 8traxrule,

I too have the problem with the LEDs turning off and after talking with Vizio they told me that they were going to send me another 551. I'm pretty sure the problem still exists (after reading your posts), and tried to ask them to ship me a 553 instead. Vizio promised me that this problem no longer exists (one day after you posted that you had to send back your 552 replacement) so I am very skeptical.

The main problem that I have, is that it takes a good three to four weeks to get a set air mailed to me (live in Hawaii), and it must cost a pretty penny also. I tried to explain to them that if they just talked to the manager at my local Costco, he would gladly refund me for the 551 and I would purchase the 553 on the spot. It would make sense to save some coin on air mailing back and forth (to me). Not to mention if I have to send the replacement back and cross my fingers that the next set will be a 553, it will be about nine weeks!

Is there someone that I could reference this problem that helped you out? Maybe they can see the same problem in both our sets and help me get the fixed model faster? I'm just a bit bummed that it will take so long before I get a set that works correctly.

Sorry for the long post.

aloha, Derrick

Called CS today and the Techs helped me reset the model number to the correct one. Tech said that "some" had experienced this glitch.

With the reset to correct model number, I did lose the names that I had entered on "Name Input" the helper text to identify what you have on hdmi1, etc.

Good news that once I got my model number set to the proper version, the Tech Logo On/Off option reappeared under TV Settings.

grpape- Funny you should post that as I already sent a link to this thread to the Vizio rep who's been helping me, showing that others have been having the same problem. They're supposed to send me a 553 next week, but it seems like that also has the same problem. Someone else posted a video of it, it's a little hard to see since the camera's far away:

A couple weeks ago I looked at a 553 and another 552 at some Wal-Mart stores, and they didn't seem to do this when I switched them to an unused input, but the store was bright and I didn't have the remote so I can't really be sure. Hopefully I'll hear from Vizio again this week- someone is supposed to check the replacement TV for this problem before I send it, but it seems like something that some people just can't see for one reason or another. I'm a little hesitant to take the 553 since it doesn't have an S-Video input on it- I have a game system that uses that; I haven't checked to see if composite really makes any difference on this TV but I don't see any sense in their dropping something like that. On the other hand I have heard that the picture overall is a lot better than the 552.

Don't think getting the 553 is going to solve your problems. You may find it even more anoying. When my set fades to black, like between a movie and a commercial, the leds flash on and off quickly on the black screen creating a strobe affect. I would rather have them cut out a little early than to see this flashing on the screen. It can happen during a movie too if it goes to a black screen.

I was hoping the FW update would help this, but my set has been connected for 1 1/2 weeks (wired) and it still hasn't updated. I do not like this random FW update, why don't they make an option to install it manually or when/if you want it.

The reviewer also pointed out that the Vizio XVT553SV uses IPS panels just like LG does, which afford these panels the widest viewing angle of LCD technology.

It appears to me that Vizio has a "best-buy" item that is unmatched by any other major manufacturer in the sub-category of LCD large screen TVs.

Your experience sounds like mine. Had random power downs/reboots happen maybe once a month from the time I bought (June) until the firmware update (mine was the 15th I think).

If you're still having issues, try this...in the TV settings menu there is a factory default reset. Do that reset. Once finished you'll have to set the TV up again....connect the remote, scan for channels, set up inputs etc. Once that is done, pull up the apps bar and uninstall all of the factory installed apps. I can't remember what all is there....a couple of yahoo apps, amazon VOD, Rhapsody...stuff like that. Remove everything that is not related to the TV settings.

See if that helps with your power off/reboot issue. It seems to have solved mine. Once the update hit I started getting at least one reboot per day and usually it would sort of freeze up or go to a black screen a few seconds before powering off. Then the logo would flash for up to a minute and it would power back on and work fine. Once I did this, I have not had a single issue, unless it has happened while my daughter was using it and she didn't tell me.

Only difference is that I do not use wireless....mine has been wired since day one, but that seems to rule out the wireless connection being the issue. Maybe try not connecting it at all for a day or so after resetting and then slowly add things back once every day or so (wireless connection, apps etc). If you find one that starts the issue again, let us know. Only thing I've added back is Netflix and Pandora and mine is still working fine.

On the other hand I have heard that the picture overall is a lot better than the 552.

So I ended up purchasing the 553 from Costco (it was the last one till the end of Dec.). It still has the issue. I guess this is just something these backlit LED TVs have? Or is it just Vizio?

I do like this model better, however, and plan on keeping it. The PQ is much better and the blacks seem darker. It just seems like a better set to me. All in all, I am happy with this set, and will try and tweak the settings to see if there is a fix for the problem.

You might want to hold on to your 552 (S-video seems to be a deal breaker) than swapping out for the 553. My 551 didn't have the widgets and wifi built in, so that was a nice upgrade. I also think the 553 is flat out a better set. You might want to give the 553 a test drive and see if the newer model is worth not having your S-video port. IMHO you might like the overall performance of 553 over the 552 (10,000,000 to 1 ratio is much more noticeable than 1,000,000 to 1)

The only problem I'm experiencing is that with my SA cable box hooked up via HDMI to the set, I'm not getting any audio. I usually run the audio from my tuner, but it would be nice for the kids not to have to power it up. I haven't tried to run other devices through this port to get to the root of the problem (cable, device, TV). There should be audio coming out of the HDMI input correct? I might be just brain farting on the hook up.

I also wanted to let others know that Vizio really stepped up to the plate in helping me get a set much sooner than it was gonna take to have a new one (553 model instead of getting two or three 551s) shipped to me. I would buy another set or product from Vizio without hesitation.

My 553 is supposed to come this week- if it indeed still cuts the backlights completely when the picture is black, I'm going to find someone else at the company to contact about it. I'm less than impressed with the communication that seems to go on at that company- the reps I've talked to on the phone said "it shouldn't be doing that", but apparently the people who actually program these things are having it do that on purpose.

I'll probably keep the new one (just hope I can check it out for at least a few minutes before they take the other one away) but I've been annoyed at new equipment omitting S-Video jacks- how much do they really save by doing that? Good to hear it's an improvement at least, but again I'm going to keep contacting them if the smart-dimming issue is still there (at least if the picture still doesn't look as good with it off.)

Grape:
Most SA boxes will not output Dolby 5.1 via HDMI (only optical) If you go through the SA menus you should be able to configure for stereo via HDMI and D5.1 optical.

Keep us posted on this issue. I called Vizio and asked for a manager because all the other customer service reps were chasing their tails. I talked to the manager and got a call back from someone higher up in the ranks. Maybe you could do the same. It did bother me that the customer service rep told me that he specifically talked to one of the tech guys, and he said that the problem was GUARANTEED fixed on the 551 model. Good luck!

Gotcha. I do have the audio @ Dolby Digital, but it only seems to give me one option not two (one for HDMI and one for Optical).

Settings.... More Settings... Audio: Digital Out --- HDMI

This should route audio via HDMI to the TV. Dolby 5.1 is converted to digital stereo.

The optical out of the SA will be whatever the originating channel is broadcasting including Dolby 5.1

Hope this helps

Talked to Vizio again on the mini-blinds effect of my 552. I asked several times if the issue was prone to this model since this was the 2nd set that has it and was assured no it wasn't. They are now sending me another TV. The rep said it would be a new TV and not a refurb this time.
Well, my 552 was taken today and a 553 put in its place. Due to homework I haven't had time to really watch anything on it, but I did do my homework on the computer hooked to it most of the night, then scanned the TV stations.

Sadly it DOES have the exact same problem with smart-dimming as the 552, despite it allegedly being checked by someone at the warehouse before being sent! Called Vizio and the rep who's been helping me was surprised, but says he'll look into what can be done now. Given all the other stuff that can be changed with firmware updates, seems like that could do the trick but perhaps more people who notice this need to complain about it. I'll keep the smart-dimming off again for now, but of course the black backgrounds are more greyish. Grrr...

Those who've had the mini-blinds problem, what equipment have you been using? I've only noticed it on a couple DVDs that were flagged wrong, turning 'film' mode off on the player solved that (it should normally be kept on though since properly flagged discs will look better.) I'm thinking Vizio is replacing sets without knowing what's really wrong with them.

Hi Guys,

I am from Canada, and Vizio just started launching Television models here. Dell Canada is currently selling the xvt472sv for a reasonable price. I tried researching about the model, but I got mostly reviews about XVT473SV.

I am just interested in the PQ and the quality of the panel. Can someone please tell me the difference between XVT473SV and XVT472SV. XVt473SV, isn't sold in Canada. So is XVt472SV pretty much the same tv as 3SV without internet

Thanks.

I have a 552. After the latest firmware update I've noticed that the apps started acting really, really slow. When I first start the TV the apps work ok but after 2-3 minutes of the TV being on they stop working. I press the VIA button on the remote and nothing generally happens. Once in a while I'll get the input name at the top right and sometimes I'll even get a black bar at the bottom where the apps should be but they never load.

I called tech support and they seem to think it's the remote. I tried new batteries before calling but that didn't help. While on the phone with tech support we restarted the TV and the remote but it didn't helped. I really think it's the TV or maybe the firmware didn't properly install on my set.

Anyone else experiencing this issue after the latest firmware update? Before I go down the path of resetting things, I'm hoping someone has a quick fix.

I also have a 552 but haven't seen that problem. At one time I had alot of apps and they took a long time to update. So I removed Facebook, Twitter and multiple weather apps - the ones that always auto-update on startup, and they've been much snappier. They generally load fairly quickly and I don't have any problems afterward.

Wasn't the latest firmware supposed to speed up the apps? Maybe your firmware wasn't completely installed. I wonder if there is a way to trigger another download?

I installed the CNBC app and I thought that may have caused the slowness, but it continued even after I removed it. I'll call tech support again and see if there's anyway to reinstall the firmware.

Oh yeah, an added bonus since this issue has come, the TV has started to freeze and then shut itself off. This was a random occurrence before the firmware update, but now it happens relatively often (once a day, sometimes two three times a day).
Try removing all apps except the hd tv settings and app widget and see if there is any diff.

Maybe also shut off tv, unplug it for 1 or 2 min and turn it back on.
Mine (SV472XVT) updated several of weeks ago and started rebooting several times a day for about the first week after. The problem "Seems" to have cleared up on its own. Maybe, when they send out their group updates some of the sets don't update fully on the first download, causing odd problems until they update correctly.
The second call to tech support had me go back to factory settings. I was trying to avoid that and frankly I thought it wouldn't solve anything - it would just make me have to set everything up again. I was happily proven wrong since it seems that the issues have gone away. The video is no longer stuttering/freezing and the apps are once again working properly.

After going through these issues, I'm pretty certain I'll be getting an extended warranty. The question is how many years? I don't see myself changing TVs any sooner than 2-3 years, so I was thinking of getting the warranty for about 3 or 4 years. Any thoughts on this?

I'm using WPA2, and it works fine. Initially I had WPA and changed it to WPA2. Right after the change the TV got disconnected. I had to shut off the TV and turn it back on to get it to reconnect.

Have you tried connecting to a different access point and then back to yours? Maybe that will clear the key that the TV has from the old settings and it'll ask for a new one when reconnecting.

I'm one of the people who bought a 552 thru the VIA VIP program last year. With the approaching one year anniversary of my TV, I got to thinking about an extended warranty. Step #1 is find out the price and what it covers. So I went to the Vizio website, but there appears to be nothing about extended warranties. So I email them. Here's the response I got:
Dear Valued Customer,

Thank you for your recent inquiry with VIZIO. We will be more than happy to help you with your concern. Here at VIZIO we do offer best in class technical support.
Please call our customer service department at 888-849-4623 for assistance with your request. I apologize but I do not have an estimated cost for our warranty plans. Our customer service agents will be able to assist you with this information.
Thanks and have a great day!

This is surprising to me because I'm being bombarded with emails from Vizio to purchase an extended warranty for the Vizio Blu-Ray player that I got for free last April as part of the VIP program.

Does anyone have information on a Vizio extended warranty for this TV, or should I just go with SquareTrade (something like $220 for 3 years)?

Thanks!

That's odd because I keep getting notices from them. I did look into the extended plans soon after I got the TV through the VIP program so maybe that's why. Anywho, these are the quotes I get:

1 year: $ 137.95
2 years: $ 274.95
3 years: $ 337.95
4 years: $ 399.95

Try this and let me know if you see different prices: https://www.vizioserviceplans.com/

How many years are you looking to get? I've been pondering that lately.

Thanks. I can't believe that the Vizio rep didn't know about this site. I was quoted lower prices:
Service Plan Price Full Payment -or- Payment Plan
1-Year $ 113.95 $ 113.95 3 Payments of $ 39.48
2-Year $ 227.95 $ 227.95 3 Payments of $ 77.48
3-Year $ 288.95 $ 288.95 3 Payments of $ 97.82
4-Year $ 349.95 $ 349.95 3 Payments of $ 118.15

Pricing appears to vary by zipcode. I'm in 10504.

By comparison, SquareTrade.com has what appears to be the same warranty for $190 for 3 years - $99 less than Vizio.
