That video don't show squat.

Same thing is happening to my 552.
Mine 'updated' last Tuesday, then Wednesday morning and Wednesday night, once on Thursday, and three times on Friday. Not cool since it has happened during Celtic's OT 2 games in a row and while playing a competitive game online.

You must be blind then. All of the fast moving objects has lines in it (fireballs, when the hands are unbound etc).

My 552 just updated and it looks like the uniformity issue that it had during camera pans on light screens has been corrected. I'll report back when I have more data.

The backlight still goes COMPLETELY out (looking through the top of the TV, you can see the backlight turn off) when the picture cuts or fades to black- this is pretty annoying. I found out it won't do it if you set the brightness to 71, which is too high but it still looks better than with smart dimming turned off which is the only other way to keep it from doing that. I was hoping the last firmware update would have fixed that, but since it hasn't I'm now bugging Vizio to get it fixed. Their phone tech support people don't seem to know anything about what they're talking about though- I plan on sending a regular letter to the company but would like to know who to address it to.

REALLY wish this thing had a 'service mode' that would let me make some more adjustments.

Game mode to reduce latency ? was that ever a problem with anyone? I'm a 552 owner and got the update this morning and never had latency issues before.

Also the "blinds" are still there for me. However I noticed (before the update) that during netflix playback I'd use smoothmotion and never see the "blinds". maybe its cause if the resolution during netflix playback ? Just throwing it out there ....

The only time I've seen the 'blinds' effect on mine is on DVDs that weren't flagged properly for video or film content. Changing the setting on the DVD player fixed that.

I don't play a lot of games but noticed a slight delay when I do- my PS2 is run through the receiver and I have to turn video conversion off to avoid the picture being displayed later than what the game system is actually doing. I haven't tried it since they added the Game Mode- does having it on all the time degrade picture quality?

In the process right now of uploading a video of the Smart Dimming problem, it's taking a while to upload but should be done when I wake up, will post a link here as soon as I can. Hopefully this'll get Vizio to fix it, their tech support people have been very unimpressive.

In a panic after seeing my new vxt553sv turn itself on and off NUMEROUS times, during an all night CoD "Black Ops" launch marathon, I thought my brand new 553 was cutting out from heat or processing issues.

We hung it up Friday the 5th and LOVE it and the apps, but it was pi$$ing me off last night, as we were gaming with the family over Xbox Live and my TV kept turning off. WTF?!? The logo flashed white, orange, white, orange and then it was like it took a few minutes to re-boot itself and bring up the "Vizio Internet Apps" logo, and then get back to the game.

How would I look to see if it was truly an unannounced firmware update or something more serious, which should be handled under warranty? It would be nice if we the owners of the sets had the option of "when" to update, like a PC & not a surprise during whatever event might be on.

I have it hardwired via Cat. 5 cable to our Netgear router, BTW.

I don't want to tinker with it, I just want to enjoy reliable HD goodness for BD and the Xbox 360.

Oh yeah, I also was getting my bum handed to me last night. I may not be as young and my eyes aren't what they used to be, but I still like to "get my frag on."

I guess if I can blame my poor k/d ration on TV lag, then I can accept that...wait, I sucked as bad on the 42" Sharp Aquos!

It does not solve your problem(s), but might explain what is happening. :-))

You can always check with Vizio Tech Support if your rebooting is a problem, and lets us know how it was resolved.

RE: the blinding problem

It drove me nuts, too. Basically any time there is fast vertical (up and down) motion, I'd see that effect. Then I turned off the Smooth Motion and the problem went away. Since I never really saw any huge benefit to the Smooth Motion (other than scrolling text on the bottom would look a bit clearer, but is still clear enough with it off), I just keep it off, and am perfectly satisfied (well, as satisfied as I can be having a "feature" that I can't use).

Can anyone else with the VF552XVT verify that their backlight behaves the same as mine with Smart Dimming on and the brightness set at 70 or lower? Vizio wants to replace my set now, but I don't want to do that if all TVs of this model are programmed to do this.

My backlight behaves the same way shutting off all the way with smart dimming on during dark scenes.

ok been having big problems with my tv recently.

for teh past maybe 3 months, my HDMI inputs have been acting up. i'll get the searching for signal message, it won't recognize anything and i'll just get a blank blue screen that says no signal. i'd switch inputs and then it would be fine for a few days, then rinse and repeat.

today the picture on my screen has totally cut out. i turn the tv on, and the only thing that lights up is the vizio logo. screen is blank, can't access menu's to change inputs. gonna call them tomorrow, but has anyone encountered this issue before? i've searched this thread best i could and came up empty, theres just so many posts

My 552 does as well. I don't use smart dimming because rarely am I watching tv in a completely dark room. I have found that smart dimming hides details in dark scenes in a well lit room.

No issues with my 472xvt what levels are your backlights set at?

I already have a new set coming, but I'm going to check it for the same problem right away and not accept it and not let them take the old one if it still does this. I checked a 553XVT at Wal-Mart yesterday and its backlight stayed on when I switched it to an input that had nothing connected, so hopefully they can give me one of those if the replacement 552 still does this. The person at Vizio I talked to saw my video and thinks it shouldn't be doing that, but doesn't know of a way to fix this via firmware and wants to try replacing the set first. I'm going to forward him a link to this thread now though since others are having the same problem.

The only setting other than Smart Dimming On/Off that affects this is Brightness- if it's at 71 it won't do it, but of course that's too high. If it's at 70 or lower, it'll cut out when the picture gets too dark (looking through the back of the set, there's no light at all visible.) I've played with all the other settings and on every picture mode (those are really just presets for different picture settings) and there is no other way to defeat the backlight going out other than keeping the brightness at 71.

I've tried watching it with Smart Dimming off, but with it off there's practically no blacks at all- dark scenes look more gray, plus the backlight is uneven (the top right corner seems to be brighter, but this isn't noticeable with Smart Dimming on.) I'm a bit picky about such things- I held off getting an LCD until ones with better black levels came out (didn't want a plasma because of the burn-in issue- I watch a lot of 4x3 material with black side bars and play video games sometimes too.)

Replacement TV is coming tomorrow morning, we'll see what happens...

Replacement had the same problem so had them take it back, rather than risk it having more problems than the one I've already got. The person at Vizio helping me with this wasn't in when I called so I left a message. Hopefully someone there is also reading this thread.

The Vizio rep says he's talked to several people at the company, and oddly they don't seem to be aware of this problem! I've pointed out this thread, where others have said they've had the same problem. If more people speak up here, they might be able to do a firmware upgrade that fixes it.

It does this on EVERY source (even with streaming video and the TV tuner) regardless of resolution- the only thing that makes a difference is if the Brightness is at 71 or higher it won't do this.

Does this happen on the new XVT553 or don't you know?

I think my 551 does that. It doesn't bother me though. I just assumed that, since black is the absence of light, the best way of achieving this is to turn the light off.

The transition can sometimes be annoying depending what's on the screen when it comes back from off, giving the pop effect I'm thinking you don't like.

Anyone having trouble with the latest firmware update?

A few weeks ago I received the update: vizio_c1.2.22_RC1. I didn't see much difference.

Three days ago my TV flashed on and off, so I assumed I was getting another update. Still says vizio_c1.2.22_RC1.

But...my picture quality now is horrible. I'm getting severe pixellation whenever a scene fades in or out or dissolves. Like the set cannot capture the new scene fast enough.

Anyone else?

Got the update over a week ago, and today my TV has turned itself off twice . I have had that happen maybe once every few weeks since I've had the TV. Anyone else have it happening ? Its not just an immediate shut down like before, it almost seems like a video crash as the picture goes to a test patern looking screen (mixed color boxes all over the screen) and then shut off.

A bit worried about this now, as i never seen it do this. Almost feels like this TV was incomplete and sold to use as a beta test TV with the screen issues and usb port debacle .....

It would be helpful to state which tv you have - 551, 552, 553? It seems as though the random reboot has been relegated to the 3 series. I have had my 552 for 9 months and it has never turned off by itself.

I recently purchased the 55"..Right now it has the original FW that came with the set so I hasn't updated yet. When it does update, will I loose all of my video/audio setting? If so, I'm going to unplug it from the network until I can right them down. I don't want to have to guess and go through all this again.
