I apologize if this has been mentioned in another thread but I can't seem to find it. Does anybody know when the new Samsung 2009 plasmas called 6 and 8 series will be for sale?

Does anybody know? Also prices?

The 8 series looks amazing!

The Series 8 and 6 look amazing, but I haven't heard anything about updates to the Series 5 Samsung plasmas -- believe it will be called the PN50B550. Any info?

Info is very limited on the 6 and 8 series.

Anyone know what the black levels are like in the 5 series? Also, is there a 42" 1080p?

Most likely 50,000:1 Native and 2,000,000:1 Dynamically.

Interesting. I wonder if they actually have deeper blacks than panasonic for once.

Doubt it. I don't think they are using 5 lumen tech either.

Interesting. Is this an educated guess Chris or some inside info?

What I like about Sammy Plasmas is that you don't have to pay a premium for accurate colors. If last years 550 model was any indicator of what to expect this year then we are living in good times, well besides the economic crisis lol.

Info I gained from CES :

Samsung Plasma's (for release in March or April)

PN42B450
PN50B450

PN42B550
PN50B550

PN50B650
PN58B650

These units below are 1.1" thick and have a light filter to take in light but not let the light back out creating less reflection.

PN50B850
PN50B860
PN58B850
PN58B860

Samsung will also release series 4,5,6,and 7 in standard LCD format. They will have a series 6, 7, and 8 in LED LCD's. The series 8 will be 1" Thick.

^^^ Thanks Chris. As I've said, I really like the way Samsung approaches technical issues. There approach seems broad and comprehensive.

*Increased subfields - better gradation, 1080 motion resolution
*Lower power consumption
*February

So LG, Panasonic and Samsung are doing pretty much the same thing this year regarding PDP improvements.

BTW. LG is claming equal to Pioneer 9G black levels.

If they are dropping in late February-March then there should be some blowout pricing on the '08 models anyday now right?(maybe starting this weekend...2 weeks before SB?)

I really like the bezel on these Sammy's. I don't care that much for the Panasonic bezel FWIW. Hopefully Samsung has done something about reducing IR on these as "from what I've read" that could be a knock against them as they seem like nice plasmas (with the exception of black levels (this is coming from a Kuro owner). I'm interested in knowing how black levels will compare with the NeoPDPs.

I really hope LG isn't BS'ing. They probably are, but I really hope they're not.

Hi,

Only time will tell but my advice is to take it as pure and total BS. This guy "Joakim Ornstig" is a lone voice and I have exchanged mail with him the last of which he did not reply to. He was the one who started the "Infinite Black" rumours over a year ago with the PG7000 and which then mysteriously had the 'Infinite Black" technology removed literally days before product launch and in many cases after product launch and shipped to respective markets - which simply does not make sense. When I enquired about this with Mr Ornstig, he did not grace me with a response.

I personally got to know some high level LG staff in the flat panel division in certain European markets and they were quite upset that he was proclaiming such stuff. Remember, nothing official has been stated by LG, not even at CES - I am sure that if they has blacks that could match or better the G9 Kuro's (something that not even Panasonic has been able to do despite being in a partnership of some sort with Pioneer) then LG would have been singing it from the rooftops but they did not. This is just another case of Mr Ornstig being over jealous or making mischief again.

was the same person that last year claimed that the LG's PDP euro models would be infinite contrast, but when they come out the black levels was absolutely terrible?

Hi,

Yep, that's the one! He is not very popular in Europe at all from what I have read!

Thanks for all the posts, and the extra link.

I can't decide if I'll go for the new Samsung 8 series or the new Panasonic Z1. I think i'll just have to wait and see when they arrive.

Please if anyone sees prices or release dates on the new Sammy plasmas, be sure to pass it on

This is just speculation as Panasonic has released their contrast numbers. They should equal or comparable. Again the numbers are irrelevant, but let's hope that they measure near or exceed 6,000:1. I believe the Kuro's measure around 6,000:1

Chris

8Gs can do 10,000:1 post calibration...40fL peak white/0.004fL Minimum Luminance).

9Gs can do 65,000:1 to 78,000:1 post calibration... 53fL peak white (63fL in Perfomance Mode on the Elites)/0.0008fL (average Minimum Luminance).
Those are real ansi contrast numbers on the 9g's?!?
Holy crap!

But I agree if Sammy can lower the black level and get the contrast to~5K or higher it should make for a fine plasma.
