Moxi 3012 DVR Q&A and Discussion Thread - Page 5

When I wake up in the morning and turn on the TV, the screen is green and difficult to get the 3012 to "wake up." I'm using HDMI which I find to be flakey on my Olevia TV. I've changed the source on the TV to no avail. When I've unplugged the HDMI and plugged it back in, it's come back to life.
I'll probably go back to component when my Toslink to Coax converter shows up at my door.

I've read a lot of stuff about Olevia and HDMI handshaking issues, so component is probably your best bet. I mean there isn't any advantage using HDMI if you're pumping sound to a receiver by toslink or coax anyhow -- cept maybe wire management.

Yeah, I just haven't gotten the converter in the mail yet. I'll soon go back to component/toslink. So far, happy with the 3012 except the slow menus. I still need to figure out what harddrive to get.

Toslink converter didn't work. Time for a new receiver with either HDMI passthrough or digital optical inputs.

Anyone have any experience yet with the Fantom GF100EU.
Buy.com has it for 99 but you need to buy an estata cable.

They have pretty good reviews on Newegg ... get a cable from monoprice.com, shouldn't be more than a couple of bucks.

The moxi specifically lists 7200rpm as a requirement and the GF100EU I just got from Newegg was a Green drive. Now fantom sells Green external units so I am not sure if it was mistake to include a green drive in their other unit or if it is their normal.. Either way I just had to process a return at newegg because of this and I did see at least one other Newegg reviewer who complained of the same issue. The Newegg description lists 7200rpm, the box I received even said on 16mb cache. Yet the drive inside was Green Drive with 8mb cache..

The GF1000EU is 7200 rpm and 16MB cache, not to be confused with the Fantom Green which is only 5400 rpm. The specs meet Charter's minimums.

After further researching this drive, it may not be what it is advertised. Interestingly, the Fantom website doesn't list the RPMs in the specs. Some are speculating that they are refurb drives.

I'll wait until further reviews of hard drives before jumping in.

Does anyone find that the S/PDIF output plug on the Moxi 3012 provides a VERY loose fit? I'm having trouble getting the digital optical to work. I tried a converter (to COAX) and a receiver with an optical input and neither puts sound out from the Moxi. The toslink plug going into the Moxi sits very loose and doesn't actually "plug" in. It's as if the optical plug housing sits too far back from the frame and doesn't allow the plug to get into the Moxi far enough to get a good seat into the plug.

Make sense? Anyone having any problems with digital optical on the 3012?
Do I need to resort to going out and getting a new receiver with HDMI passthrough?

My research (googled 'toslink loose cable') indicates that this is a fairly common occurence. I'll have to try a dab of superglue on the toslink cable, let it dry and see if I can get a connection.

THis is driving me nuts!

Although Newegg is processing my return without restocking fee and they paid the return shipping I just go an official reply from Newegg saying that Per Fantom they do not guarantee what speed drive you will get in any of their enclosures. They also appear to have now updated their description as it no longer includes 7200rpm in it... So I guess the thing to know here is to stay away from Fantom if you want to ensure you are meeting the Moxi specs.

What do you guys think about this Cavalry 1TB Hard drive for the 3012? $129 with esata cable.

I can't find any actual specs on the drive inside (buffer etc) so I can't comment either way. It looks good

I'm having the same problem. Actually, it initially just plain refused to see any drives. Then I got a eSATA cable from Amazon, and it's willing to see a 500gb drive in a Antec enclosure that's worked perfectly for months. But after 2 days of having the drive attached, it started locking up while playing recordings off the drive.

Maybe we need a list of compatible drives?

Can someone tell me whether the Moxi 3012 will output HD channels as 16x9 480i through the SD outputs (composite and s-video)?

I am happy to report that the Cavalry 1TB CAXM3701T0, which is still $129 with free shipping at Buy.com, is up and fully functioning on my Moxi 3012. It formated in a matter of seconds and my storage went from around 95% to 7% and holding steady. No issues so far other than the bright blue LED that everyone seems to complain about, but I put the drive in the back corner of my entertainment center facing backwards and I don't see it at all.

On another note, I still can't get the optical out to work on the Moxi 3012. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. My only recourse seems to be either to get Charter out to check it (which they won't know what to do with) or upgrade to a new surround sound receiver with HDMI passthrough to my Olevia TV. I don't favor that solution due to current funds and the problem with Olevia TVs and the HDMI handshaking problems.

I've got Charter here in Burbank. Have been wanting to upgrade my old one moxi for a while (it's just too damned hot - but aside from that the wife and I love it).

Anyone?

Did you contact Logitech to see if they will update their database to include the 3012?
I did a search last week for Moxi 3012 in the Logitech/Harmony software, and it said it was found.

Yep .. when I first got my 3012 they hadn't updated, so you guys just reminded me. Just updated my 659 and it works perfectly with the 3012.

These remotes are like tanks. My 659 is at least 5 years old and still kicking Logitech still performs firmware updates on it even.

Has anyone been using a Green eSATA drive successfully with the Moxi? I know they specify 7200rpm in the required specs but I was wondering if these green drives are able to keep up.

Twice now I have bought a drive off newegg.com listed as 7200 RPM, and twice now I have found that the contents of said drive were a WD Green drive that does NOT run at 7200rpm. I am about to give up as it seems its next to impossible to ensure that you actually receive a 7200rpm drive these days without buying one of the more expensive name brand (Seagate, WD) drives.

I just attached the latest purchase it to my pc and determined its another green rated drive... I'm about to give up on my search... I'm on a budget so I am really trying to avoid purchasing the enclosure plus the drive.. I just can't believe they can't properly list the specs of these drives. Its a damn shame these Green drives haven taken off in popularity so much. I have a feeling buying the 2 parts separate, or bending over for one of the DVR expander labeled drives is going to my only choice that ensures 7200rpm.

Its not that they don't run at 7200rpm ... but they use variable speeds which will definitely wreak havoc with the Moxi. I think I'll update the first post advising people to avoid "green" drives, as your case is not the first I've heard of.

If you already have the enclosure, just order a drive from somewhere and don't buy a green one ... I've ordered plenty of drives for work from vendors, and have never received a green drive unexpectedly ...
Yeah I kind of assumed as much... Saw some reports of users modify drives firmware to minimize the affects of the variable speed but instead opted for just returning the drive.

Newegg gave me a bit of grief in trying to say they can't claim the speed of the drive and anything is listed as upto despite the fact that the external drive I purchased specifically listed 7200rpm in the specs portion on their site. Problem is the budget oriented External Manufacturers all just slap in a WD, or seagate drive on the inside so I guess they don't care to take the time to even try to offer similarly speced drives in their enclosures. So I guess I'm done with 3rd party externals and will either stick with a name brand, or just buy an internal drive and slap it in an enclosure..

For the record it was a Cavalry and Fantom drive that I purchased and neither listed it as being green, with both listing 7200rpm at one point on Newegg. (Newegg corrected the error after my complaint for the Fantom drive). You would think manufacturers would want to clearly label a green drive as being green so that people know that they are getting something that should use less power as a selling point for the drive.

Oh Well, as always NewEgg support rocks so they will pay the return shipping and avoid the restocking fee.

Anybody recording of "Fringe" on their 3012 off last night? I got a couple of minutes of Idol at the start and then missed the ending of Fringe. I just reset the recording options for extra 10 mintues so it won't happen again but wondering if anyboydelse had the problem.

American Idol went long Tuesday night by about 5-6 minutes. It is a live show and one of Fox's highest rated and the network seems willing at times to let the show go long. So adding on time to record a show after Idol is a good strategy in general.

Protesting and fire to make American Idol go away is a better strategy.

Ah yes, but adding 10 minutes to the end of Fringe is more likely to produce the desired result!

Thanks for explanation and heads up. Another question for the group: why is it on some stations (Channel 11 in particular) that even though the picture is in HD the black side bars appear? It was that way on the Blues game Friday night yet when FSM does HD game it is full screen. Any idea? (PS yes I can go to expand mode on my HD tv and fill screen but that kind of defeats purpose of HD, doesn't it).

Last I knew Channel 11 has never broadcast a blues game in HD, so it was probably just up converted standard picture you were looking at and why it wasn't in wide screen.
