Analog TV Picture Cropped thru Comcast?

Thread Starter
I have Comcast cabletv service via two Analog TV's
-One with Digital Box
-One without

The picture on both appears to be cropped (or zoomed) when broadcasts originate in HD format. This has been the case for months. For example, watching NBC during Saturday Night Live picture starts normal then seems to be zoomed in for the rest of the program. I've yet to find anything that addresses this problem. Any info would be great. Thx

Well if you look at any network stuff that's broadcast in 16:9 you will notice the network bug is placed so that when cropped at 4:3 it appears in the corner...

Most likely they have switched to using only the digital feed with the analog shutdown coming, if the local station is only passing an HD feed, they need to crop and downconvert it before sending it out as the SD version of the station.

When networks broadcast programs flmed with HD widescreen cameras over their SD/analog channels they center cut the video by cropping off the sides. It is very obvious that they are going to to this when watching a HD filmed program over an HD channel with a widescreen TV when you reaize that there is no important video content or text such as football game scores on the sides of the screen.

All the providers (cable, sat etc) are moving to use the digital feeds instead of the analog ones (since there will be no analog feeds from the stations after february). If the station's digital feed is HD 16:9, the provider has two choices - broadcast the 16:9 picture inside a 4:3 frame, or crop the 16:9 picture to fill the 4:3 frame. As far as I know, all the networks have decided to use the crop approach.

This happens to me when I accidentally press the HD ZOOM button on my Comcast remote.

Make sure the HD ZOOM is on the "normal" setting.
