Anyone build a planar speaker?

Has anyone here built a Planar speaker from scratch? I was reading about building one on another site and was interested. They can be built for cheap. But they just gave general guidelines. Anyone know of a good place to look for DIY full range planar speaker plans?

Do you really mean planar? Such as an electrostatic speaker (like the Quad), a planar dynamic (like the Magnepans) or a ribbon? Or are you referring to a flatish speaker to mate with a flat panel display?

It would certainly be an insteresting project if possible. I would be interested in learning the specifics of this.

I have never heard of anyone on this forum building a planar setup.

I mean a flat piece of perforated metal with magnets and foil. Heres the post I was talking about.

Have you looked into modding the Magnepan products? It's a common practice with web support; one fellow even started a business doing it (Magnestand).

The MMGs are so cheap (especially used), I don't think you could build a diy version for the same cost. And folks are modding them to the point where the only OEM parts left are the drivers.

I wonder if my Receiver would be able to handle them. Its a Onkyo HT-R540. It says it 110w RMS at 8 ohms, but doesn't say anything about 4 ohm loads. Think Id fry it?

From the manual:
You can connect speakers with an impedance of
8 ohms or higher
. If you use speakers with a lower
impedance, and use the amplifier at high volume levels
for a long period of time, the built-in protection
circuit may be activated.
It also says:
All channels: 110 watts minimum continuous power
per channel, 8 ohm loads, 2 channels
driven at 1 kHz, with a maximum total
harmonic distortion of 0.9%
Note that the rating is with only 2 channels in use and only at 1KHz (not full range) with high THD of nearly 1%.

I would think this likely to be quite inadequate for Maggies or similar.

I have been building full range planars for 20 years now. Starting with heavy ferrite ones, weighing over 40 kilos. I now use neos and have built several pairs. The smallest being 5 kilos bass is very tight unlike the esl 57 & 83, which sound plummy and resonant in comparison.

I have been rebuilding all my designs using 23 micron mylar A.and have reduced the width of my aluminim tape by half.This has improved the sensitivity quite a lot.I have pictures on imgur site,and videos on youtube also on diyaudio site under full range planars using neo magnets and under other forum names on the same site. I am also doing rebuilds and re-designs using ferrite magnets,reducing the weight considerably.Cutting down on the magnets by half. Still have a few more rebuilds before I start on a design for planar headphones. Wish me luck.

I have built a few new designs with a better foil layout similar to the epsilon layout. this increases the sensitivity significantly.

Jamesbos,

Is the trapezoid cutout to help with the break-up modes of the plastic or to help with the dipole nulls?

I must admit, I am very interested trying my hand at ones of these.

Am in the process of rebuilding my rebuilds with the new 3 mm tape and 12 um mylar C. Ceased building the epsilon design, am now using 3 mm wide tape as is. Do not have to cut anymore alu tape in half or quarter. A lot easier for a 74 year old.smile.gif Something to do with standing waves , best to ask the experts I only build and listen, don't understand all the gobbledygook.biggrin.gif Have got another 6 to go in my living room 10.1 layout all hanging from the ceiling, they only weigh 5 kilos each. 60 x 40 cm in size. Making sure they are all in phase this time using 9 volt battery.
