Filmon.com HDI player hits beta

http://www.filmon.com/tv/?mid=13&a=tab_software

last month they claimed that the hdi player will be able to stream live HD feeds to people even on 2mb connections. its in beta as of today. I have no idea if they are showing anything in hd as of yet. i'm on a 1mb connection ( til spring when i upgrade, when i get netflix)

the quality is pretty good on my laptop. i have no idea on a tv on a faster connection. so can someone please test it out who has a pc connected to a large screen hdtv?

so far just 4 channels, and soon will have cnn and mtv and more. they signed a deal for turner networks not to long ago. they did call the system virtual cable, since they are trying to compete with cable and dish. filmon also plans on a settop box down the line. I hope they work with other box manufactures

i'm watching KUNG FU : the movie on the the film on movie channel. looks good quality wise on a 1mb or so connection

edit: kung fu is over, and matrix reloaded is on now. lame thing is the matrix reloaded is on 4:3 pan and scan, while kung fu was in the correct aspect ratio.

Well, I wanted to try it, but it apparently doesn't work with Chrome or IE8, so started up Firefox and now it tells me my connection is 177kb (I have 10M down). Maybe they're just getting slammed right now.

I'll try it later, I guess.

EDIT: Did manage to get it downloaded and installed, but I guess I'm not sure what to do now. I see 4 "channels" on the left, but they only play a short intro commercial (which looks pretty good quality wise) then it doesn't do anything. Just staring at a black screen that says "playing" in the lower left.

it should by default go to the top channel which is the movie one. matrix reloaded is still playing.

try clicking the channel. ya, right now only 4 channels are available but more soon. they have cnn on the website (the logo for it, and had mtv a few weeks ago) neither are available just yet.

Is this a legit service? One of the channels is labeled XXX, and it's not the Vin Diesel movie! That's kind of shocking for a service that wants to offer mainstream content, since it's not password protected or anything.

and yes that does puzzle me as to why they didnt password protect porn. im going to guess its a beta issue, but still.

Ah, now it's working somewhat this morning. Matrix Reloaded is in the dock scene, and I see quite a bit of macroblocking when I switch to fullscreen. Oh wait...now I'm looking at another "loading" screen.

Ok, now it's not working again. All 4 channels only play an intro commercial, and then not much else. The top one (showing the Matrix) and the bottom (CBS Miami) show about 2 seconds of the show and then freezes, and the other two don't show anything after the commercial.

Ok, I closed and reopened the player, and Matrix is playing again. But:
  1. If I switch channels, it won't work. Even I switch back to Matrix, it will only play a couple seconds and freeze.
  2. Interesting that if I go to fullscreen, then his ESC to exit out of it, the controls at the bottom disappear (so I can't go back to fullscreen or pause it or anything)

Seems to me it's a big buggy at the moment. Wonder if it's just me.

Me digs XXX

Have not tried it yet, but it looks like they have ESPN! Pretty sweet for NBA games and Monday Night Football!

Well, decided to try Beta 4, despite the first Beta sucking (see above). Seems to be a little better, and channels are working (note to others...it wasn't at first until I uninstalled the old one, then reinstalled the new one).

There's no ESPN channel from what I can tell.

Still a bug (at least for me) that after switching to full screen and pressing ESC to exit fullscreen, the controls at the bottom disappear. Thus there is no way to go back to fullscreen either.

And apparently the only movie they show on the first channel is Matrix Reloaded...since it's still playing.

It's alright I guess. I don't think I'll use it much unless they add a lot of channels. There's too much on-demand stuff now (with Youtube, Hulu and the like) for me to watch this "live" stuff. I might watch CNN on occassion though. Oh, and of course there's always the XXX channel

I saw ESPN listed as one of the channel choices... again, I have not tested it but it would be awesome to get ESPN this way.

a new channel has been added. its a history channel. so now 6 channels available
post #15 of 21
Just a heads up there is a new version of this available. Looks like they added a TON of channels under a "World Channels" heading.

I am still having issues actually getting stuff to play consistently...most of the time it just plays the intro commercial, then freezes up.

But figured some of the rest of you might want to check it out.

What totally gets me is how the HDi Kids channel is right next to the XXX channel.

Watched foreign channels, nice French and Eastern Euro lineup

thats been fixed so far for now, but i just opened the player and found they now have playboy as well. so 2 porn channels now

a few weeks ago they had the europe version of the cartoon network and cnn america, i hope those come back as well as add cartoon network usa.

Hoe do you guys manage to get the channels list on FilmOn TV HDi
All I get is a blank screen where the channel list should be. Ran Spybot and Adaware to eliminate any malware that might cause it but still nothing.
Would be nice to watch some british TV online.

I have 6 Mb pipeline yet all HDi channels tend to freeze betw 4 to 30 seconds
into viewing. P-boy and XXX do it worst, others too.

I've kindof given up on it. I've tried it on two laptops and my desktop (home and work) using XP and Vista, and the player just does not work. I either get lockups or freezes, and I get the same behavior with controls disappearing after going to fullscreen and back again. Some channels load, others don't, but even if they do load, I get lockups anyways.

I don't know what's wrong with it, but it's not worth the hassle to me.

I have a friend who has it working ok so I will check their computer settings and if I have any news will post here. It has become an obsession with me so I WILL get to the bottom of it.
