If you're having trouble getting optical to work....

One possible issue is covers on the end of the cable. Mine were diabolical. They're clear so you see the red light, they let you plug the connector in, and they extend far enough into the connector that you can't see the edge. If you're not familiar with what the end should look like, the only way you can tell if you have them is to dig your fingernails into the nice new cable and try to pull them off. Which, in desperation, was what I finally tried.

Most cable packaging has instructions to remove the protective caps/covers before connecting to the equipment.

To be honest, I can't recall a single cable or connector that actually came with instructions. the last optical cable I bought, from Monoprice had gray colored protective caps on both ends.

Wait, a right angle RCA adapter had the instructions: plug into jack then attach suitable cable.

Maybe they assumed that most people have some common sense.

...and/or over 20 years of experence with the connection covers.

Common sense should make one assume that most do not have common sense and only assume.

Thanks for the proof

Shouldn't need any proof (or a theorum). I personally find it easy to separate the two from some of my reading. But... just here to help.

My new HDMI cables didn't. Just a cable in a bag with a twist tie, nothing else. But then it was pretty clear the connector wouldn't fit with the covers on.

"warning: The contents of this coffee cup are hot"

recorded announcement, in 3 languages, at the Sacramento airport:

"To use the escalator, step forward, when you've reached the top, step forward and continue walking"

maybe common sense should be tought in school.

I truly don't understand this comment. What's common sense got to do with the fact that the covers were darn near invisible? The red light shone through just fine. The cable plugged in. And, the package had no info.

Would common sense tell you that there MUST be a cover? Why, if they're sealed in a package anyway?

Somehow I don't think I'm the first person to have this problem.

Helpful Tips!

Remove dust caps on both sides of repeater before using.

Also remove plastic dustcaps off the the ends of your new toslink cables.

To the OP, glad you figured it out. I don't think you'll ever have that problem again.
