Have the DLP inventory clearouts begun?

I've been watching Rear Projection DLP set prices since early December 08 when talk began of 2008 being the last year to see new models... Now that CES 2009 has come and gone we know Samsung will not be introducing any new DLP models in 2009, leaving Mitsubishi as the sole manufacture of Rear projection televisions moving forward 2009 and beyond.

Without getting into specific pricing in terms of retailer name and make and model (since that would be outside the scope of this forum), in general do you think the clear out has begun? In the last week I've seen several on-line vendors drop pricing on DLP sets from the normal 15-20% below MSRP up to 20-30% off MSRP. On some of these sets that's $600+ markdown on some of the larger sets... Do you think this is the result of the CES 2009 announcement or just typical pre-Superbowl sales?

I've seen more than a few comments in threads in this forum regarding 'I'm waiting for closeout pricing'. I have to wonder with only Mitsubishi and Samsung in the game (with only a few models to pick from) it seems the supply and demand is balanced on these sets.... It's possible those deep discounts will never come.

Thoughts?

The steep reductions are a result of the closeout of the Samsung DLP line. They need to close down the manufacturing facilities to produce other sets so the need to get rid of their current inventory.

The discounts will all depend on sales volume of what they have left. If a lot of people suddenly decide they want the big screen and it's going away, they will hold the prices up. I have seen some Sammy's prices move up and down quite a bit in the past week. First it was way low, then it just popped up again. I think it's all volume related and waiting too long may result in none being available.

Samsung said they would continue manufacturing the 2008 DLPs for a period of time. I kinda doubt that will continue after the 2009 models hit the shelves (probably before April) and it could have already ended. I doubt there's much incentive for them to continue making DLPs after they whittle down their supply of parts and gear up the production lines for new models.

I'd say get one soon if you want one.

I'm seeing even deeper discounts since my original post.... A750 Samsung series discounted up to 40% from reputable on-line retailers. I agree, get one soon if you want one.... it appears the retailers are trying to clear them out quickly.
