Official Toshiba AV502U Thread

I've seen a few people posting here and there about purchasing them, but I haven't seen an official thread. I figured it was good time to get a thread together for those that have purchased to share experiences, settings, etc. I myself recently purchased the 37AV502U at a decent discount. I will post some of my own observations later.

Just got it as well. I will post my settings here when I get them done.

If anyone finds out how to access the service menu, please post it.

Here is what I have seen so far. THis is my first HDTV, so I am somewhat of a noob on this. I feel its an overall solid TV for the money. The HD picture quality is outstanding. I have also tried 480P on DVD (component hookup) with great results. However, the quality of SD depends greatly on the quality of the source signal. SD from OTA looks pretty good. However, the SD off Dish connected via s-video has been spotty at best. You can tell easily when there is a great amount of compression or not. I watched Lost the other night and it looked fantastic. However, I was watching a movie on Spike the other day and it looked like complete crap. Even the same channels vary in signal quality at different times of day. On my old CRT it all looked pretty much the same quality, however, on a larger screen with a higher resolution I guess it all gets exposed. One of the biggest weaknesses is that it is not the best at smoothing jagged edges when dealing with SD. I also noted this oddly enough when watching Wall-E at 480P, which was surprising since every other DVD I watched looked fantastic.

As others have noted, the picture tends to be a little on the red side coming out of the box. I tend to prefer the warmer color so it has not bothered me too much. One of the quickest ways to remedy the problem is to change the color temp to cool, but you will need to make other adjustments. I have no issue with the level of black particularly with the Dynalight on. Since my TV is situated in a fairly bright family room, my settings are a little on the bright side compared to what a lot of others on this fourm would run them on. I also noted that I set the settings brigher for the DVD connected through component then on the other inputs. I have not set up anything through HDMI yet (I plan on upgrading the Dish to HD soon.) I am no expert on color and I don't have a settings disk yet, so I just eyeballed it to my taste right now, but here is what I got my settings at:

Satellite
Contrast 78
Backlight 40
Dynalight ON
Brightness 60
Color 58
Tint 0
Sharpness 0
Dynamic Contast ON
Color Temp Medium
B Drive 2
G Drive -2
CableClear/DNR LOW
MPEG NR OFF

OTA SD/HD - All the same except:
Color 52
Sharpness 8
Brightness 65

DVD Component - all the same except:
Contrast 80
Backlight 45
Brightness 75
Sharpness 12
Tint -6
Dynamic Contrast OFF
G Drive 0

I'll be interested to hear others comments and also what the results are from some more experienced calibrators.

I just bought one of these in a display model today, does anybody know how to get in the service menu so I can find out how many hours is logged in? Otherwise this tv has a fantastic picture and my xbox 360 is amazing.

I would think that getting into the service menu on this set is probably the same as most of the other Toshiba sets which have long threads on this forum, I would check there first.

I didn't get to do any adjustments this weekend, since the set is 5" larger than I had anticipated, I spent most of the weekend changing furniture around to accommodate it. I did buy a brand new Panasonic up-converting DVD player to go with it and didn't even have the time to hook that up to it. I really will try to get it over this week.

So far the common toshiba procedure doesn't work, I've tried holding the mute button on the remote and pressing the menu button on the lcd then releasing both at the same time does not work. hmmm
post #8 of 73
Service menu is not very helpful. But to enter it press LEFT, EXIT, then ENTER.

You can check hours and it has R, G, B drives, but 1 click is way too much adjustment. Actually the set is pretty damn close to 6500k with mode set to Preference and color temp warm. Its the best you can get. Service menu tweaks only made it worse.

Anyone found discrete power codes yet? I found several for Regza sets but they do not work on my 37AV502u. Many do nothing and some are simply toggle (send it once it comes on, sent it again and the tv turns off; same for off or on code).

Inputs is not that big of a deal since you can send a macro for INPUT, then 5 (or 6 for me), and the tv will go to HDMI 1 or 2.

I see there is a Toshiba file:
http://resellers.tacp.toshiba.com/ta...CodeMaster.pdf

But it seems like its older and the codes do not work on the AV502 series tv's.

Also, there is a firmware update for some models in this series here:

http://support.toshiba.ca/support/ce...?docid=D000017

I updated mine (turns out it already had oct 08 firmware. Discrete codes listed in the post above this don't work. I even tried all 255 codes for the Regza and no discrete codes at all.

I found this TV today on Crutchfield but it does not have any reviews. Is there anyone who watches a lot of sports on this model? If so how does it handle motion. & are you otherwise impressed at the price point of about 650-700 for this set.

Most LCDs have at least some trouble with motion as its the nature of the beast. I have watched sports with this TV and it is tolerable. I would say that as far as a 37" LCD at this price range, you would have a very hard time finding anything markedly better. Yes, there are several better sets at handling motion out there but at a higher price. The question is whether it is tolerable for you personally. I would try to get to some B&M stores and check it out in person or buy it and try it and if its not sufficient return it. Just like anything else, you need to balance what your needs are for performance with what you can afford price wise. By the way, there are a ton of reviews for this set at Amazon and Best Buy.

The pq on this set is amazing, but I wanted to ask you guys some questions.

Are you guys also experiencing a slight humming noise originating from the backlight when the tv is on mute or during a very quiet show? The pq and game modes are so good, I don't want to make this a deal breaker.

Also, is the default backlight setting of 70 too high?

I have noticed a hum very briefly when I've first turned the TV on a couple of times, but otherwise I don't notice anything. My backlight is at 40-45 so see if its less noticeable if you turn down the backlight and increase the brightness a little. I generally have pretty sensitive ears for those types of noises so I wonder if its just some sets that have the issue and not others and I have tried to sit and listen specifically for any buzzing with my set. I don't think its related, but on another note, I have my speakers turned off completely since I am hooked up through my sound system.
Cool, I have read reviews on Amazon and Best Buy with about 7 or so people noticing this buzz/hum. I almost like the TV too much to take it back for this reason, as I have been down the Dynex/Insignia road and the LG appears a little too washed out for me.

Do you think I should try and exchange just to see if it's isolated to xx% of units or just live with it and buy the extended warranty?
Well I did get into the service menu and found my set to have 435 hours so now I know. Now I have only had this set for 2 weeks and now it started hummming. I called the store I bought it from and they said your sol deal with the manufacture were going out of business. I guess I'm calling toshiba!

I just purchased a 37AV502U about a week ago. So, I must say, I'm disappointed. The picture quality on HD from Rogers is horrible. I've hooked it up using component and HDMI and the picture is very pixelated and breaks up/freezes on occasion. Since this is my first HDTV, is there something i'm missing such as a set up? I have had my cable company check the conection twice now and they say I have a high signal strength and no problems.

Why would you blame the TV and not Roger's? If this is your first HDTV I suugest you try to find another person near you and look at Roger's on a different HDTV, I bet their's will pixelate just as much.

Also take you tv out of torch mode and try turning down the sharpness as a test.

Update on my TV so far. As far the hum some report: I did pop the TV into "sports mode" which cranks the backlight all the way up and I can detect a hum from my seating position with the volume quiet. At my normal 40-45 setting for the backlight, I do not detect any hum from seating position, even with the sound muted. If i were to go all the way up to the TV and literally put my ear right next to it, I do hear a hum at that setting, but I have found that is the case with almost any piece of electronic equipment to varying degrees.(DVD players, receivers, modems, you name it) Its definitely less anoying the high-pitched whine of just about any CRT I have ever experienced and I'd never be sitting close enough to the TV to ever notice it. I do have my TV in a cabinet which could also be helping to muffle the sound. In my experience with it, if you have your brightness set to the right level, I don't see why you would want the backlight set up above 50 anyway. In "Standard mode" the backlight is at I believe 70 and the picture does not appear any "dimmer" with my settings of 40 for the backlight and 65 for brightness. As i've said before, my TV is in a fairly bright room so if you have it in a dimmer room, you could probably get away with even lower settings. Maybe my TV is an exception, but that is just my personal experiences.

As far as any problems, every once in a great while, the screen will randomly go dark at which point you need to turn it off and turn it back on and it is fixed. It's happened three times total and it has been completely random with no noticeable pattern or condition. No correlation to run time or anything occuring in source material. I figure it is a firmware glitch of some sort. It hasn't happened again in a while so if it does, maybe I'll try a firmware upgrade.

My other annoyance is that the IR sensor is ridiculously weak. I have heard some complain about the remote for the TV. Having tried a few Universal remotes with the set now, I can safely say its not the remote, but the sensor. You literally have to point the remote directly at that sensor to get it to respond. It wreaks havoc on macro buttons if you don't have your remote pointed in the right spot. My kids have a heck of a time to get the TV to turn on and off and they can't get to the manual power button.

I received my set back from the repair shop, they said the hum was caused by the motherboard so that's what they replaced. When I hooked it up I noticed the same hum before I had it sent in for repair. However I did go into the settings and changed the backlight from 100 to 40 and the hum is not as noticeable. Should I try the repair again or is this as good as it gets? Also before I had the set repaired I tried different outlets in the house and it did hum in every spot I hooked it up in.

hums, buzzing, high pitch sounds, all originate most often from the CCFL bulb's ballast, its a high voltage power supply and as long as its not moderate to loud its considered normal.

how loud is it? like if you have the TV volume on low can you still hear it (when i say low I mean low enough to hear at normal viewing distance and also can you hear the sound at normal viewing distance)

if your making the room silent or getting close to the TV to hear this noise, you need to take few steps back and watch the TV
post #22 of 73
I was comparing this to the samsung450 and the 32 inch was only around 5 dollars cheaper then this set and it's 37".

Any suggestions where to purchase a AV502U?

With the backlight on 100% the humming is noticeable from low to moderate volumes(It seems pretty Loud). I can even notice it at most volumes, but when I turn down the backlight to 40% it can only be heard at very low volume and goes away anything above 14..... Being this set is in the bedroom this is very annoying, I think I will call the repair teac and see what he says.

What is the difference between the 32AV502U and the 32AV502R ?

Is the R the 2009 model ?, the U is still currently $100 MSRP more expensive on Toshiba's site !

Yes the R just means its the 2009 model.
Hello, I have a couple questions/problem.

One I can't get into the service menu, I pressed Left arrow, Exit and Enter and that didn't do anything.

Second, does anybody know what the firmware 1.02 does?

Thanks
try bestbuy, they just lowered price on it again
post #29 of 73
BB has it listed as 37AV502R/U
So which one is it R or U ?
Does it matter ?
I have a 50.00 gift card so I am very interested!

I got this TV this week and so far I am pretty happy. I am still playing around with calibration and stuff so I am not sure I have the picture exactly how I want it but it does generally look good. I am an HD noob so I am just using the calibration tool which came on "The Incredibles" DVD but it has given me a starting point.

Is there anything I should shut off (like Dynamic lighting) which is on by default on the TV?
