^^ Exactly as oman describes. The four corners of the screen have the buttons for the four different subscreens. For each activity, you can make one of the four subscreens the default one that displays automatically.
For our setup, any "Watch DVD"-type activity (Blu-ray, HD DVD) has the transport subscreen be the default. For "Watch HDTV" activity, I have the favorite channel icons as the default subscreen.
And for really crazy customization, those eight (4x2) sidebar buttons can be programmed
differently for each subscreen of an Activity, if desired.
The pic below (from a few months ago) shows a typical layout. Ignore the main section of the screen - this was when I was just starting the programming. I will upload my current screen layouts sometime this weekend so you can see the transport screen, numeric keypad screen, etc.

Hope this helps!

For me I like the 880 as it has more screen space and hard buttons on the left and right side.

Overall, I preferred the One over the 880. Better screen resolution, separation between the keys, better shaped. Much easier to find the play/pause toggle switch on the One without looking. I do wish the One had the option to display six Activity buttons (3x2) and not just three (3x1). IIRC, the 880 let you choose between the two formats.
