Oh, BTW you can actually get the mini blaster direct from Logitech for less than what's listed on that ebay link. Yes $2.00 is correct.

Here is what someone else did recently though the distance is a little closer.

Is there a link or picture missing?

$2? I'd be losing money not to get that! (as my mom would say)

Sorry, just noticed I didn't add the link. It's there now.

I didn't get the benefit of harmony's tech support since I got mine on eBay - but it was not difficult to use by any stretch of the imagination.

In this image from when I was relocating my equipment you can kind of see what I am looking to do. The emitter/mini-blaster would go on the the wall either where that curtain is hanging down on the right, or up at the top of the shelves on the right where the curtains that will cover the rack will be mounted.

Off topic but gawd, I wish I had a basement in my house (Southern California) to turn into a theater room. Well, at least I have the beach 3 miles from my house to make up for it.

Oh well, once it's setup properly you wont need to update much if at all, but that's when a laptop is handy. Good luck.

I just found this in the Logitech Forums FAQ's. If this is correct we don't have to update the extender every time... Woo hoo.

19. I thought you only had to update the wireless extender when there was a change to the extender, why am I always asked to update the extender? Is there a way around this?

The wireless extender does have a 'Smart Update' feature that only requires you to update the extender when needed. However, the way the software presents this to you is confusing. When you make a change to your setup and then click on 'Update Remote,' you will be prompted to connect the wireless extender first. However, if you connect the remote first, it is able to check and see if an update to the extender is necessary. If your change does not require an update to the extender, you will be given the option to either skip the extender update or update it if you choose. If you select 'Skip,' it will let you proceed to update just the remote. It should be noted that it does recommend you update the extender as well to make sure the setup is up to date.

Ha!
The trade off is that I have to live in Michigan... you get to live in California

First time I did a learn it was called "mynewcommand" lol, because I thought I would change it on the next screen.

As far as testing, yes that should work.

That's too funny. Well, I won't worry about the extra programmed commands then.

I tested everything out tonight, and all the commands are working with each the blu ray player, hd dvd player, and the Lutron Maestro IR switch.

Now, I guess it's just a matter of purchasing the RF extender to get everything to sync together, eh? From what you guys have told me, the RF extender has IR blasters that will send an IR signal to the Maestro? Sorry for so many questions. I just want to make sure I am purchasing the correct equipment to get the desired affect.

Thanks!

On a side note, I have to take the original Maestro back to Home Depot. The 600 watts is not going to be enough to power the 4 ceiling lights in our basement. So, I had to order the 1000 watt model from Amazon today.

Curious about what your using for lighting? That's a lot of watts for 4 ceiling lights.

The extender itself is a blaster, so hopefully with good line of site and not to far of a distance it should be able to flash your lighting switch. The 1100's extender should include 4 dual emitters which you can attach to equipment as needed. If you need to you can get the mini blaster from logitech originally for the 900 and then use a 2.5mm to 3.5mm adapter.

I suggest ebay for the extender but be sure it includes the emitters. I've seen auctions without them. The mini blasters if you decide you need them are available from Logitech for 2 bucks.

I got my extender from seller "netdirectsales" on eBay.
It is supposed to be factory refurbished and came with 4 dual emitters, but only 5 emitter covers for some reason.

Anyway - seller shipped really fast, the price is good, but doesn't answer questions.

Where are you seeing the $2 mini blasters?
Maybe I'm just not looking in the right place on the website.

Last item on this page.

Thank you!
I was clearly in the wrong area of the site
I tried out the emitter from my HK IR extender, and it only worked if right in front of the TV... The mini blaster should be a better option
post #1754 of 2037
I was browsing the site on my phone - didn't see the option off to the right hand side to look for parts.
IR blaster ordered! Thank you!

Ya it's not easy to get to at first. I should probably order a couple myself, not that I need em for anything at the moment but my configuration seems to be ever changing and it would be a great accessory to have on hand.

Yeah, its too bad the shipping is 3x the cost of the part

Well, the basement was originally built as one big room. We have it broken up into a couple of "zones". The first zone is the home theater area. The second zone is the game table and 300 gallon fish tank zone. The last zone is the workout area. The total area is about 900 square feet. The lighting is the standard ceiling lights made by Seagull. They have 3 bulbs per fixture, with a max rating of 180 watts.

I should have good line of site with the RF extender and the Maestro light switch. The distance between the two should be no more than 15 feet.

I will check out eBay. And, I'll make sure the auction has the emitters included.

Gotcha. Hopefully you should be ok at that distance, let us know how you make out. Good luck.

I will do so, oman. I really do appreciate all the help you guys have provided me in this forum!

I'm with you guys - just ordered three of 'em myself for future use, since the total was just over thirteen bucks...so close to the 1:1 ratio for product:shipping...

I need to measure my distance from blaster to Maestro's, but I'm guessing 10 to 12 feet. Hopefully you'll be just fine with your distance.

Hm, I guess I could get an extension cord, drag the blaster thru the exterior door and see how far away I could place it and still get operate the lights!

EDIT:
Funny thing is, I've been in the process of switching from a Harmony One to the new TouchSquid remote, to use with the everyday system for the house (basic TV watching, background music, etc). The H1100 is used downstairs for the "big system" for primarily movie watching. There's a chance that H1100 could also be upgraded to a TSR, especially if they add serial support/RS232 capability...now that would rock! But I will admit the few hard buttons on the H1100 would be missed...

I almost ordered 2... and now I've just come up with a use for a second one after placing the initial order... kind of wish I had!
I now its slightly off topic - but does anyone have any links to instructions on putting holes in the back housings of the Maestro switches to use an IR blaster with them?
I'm getting spoiled after 2 days of having almost everything operating with RF, and I'd like to get the lights on it too. Other option of course would be to get another mini blaster to position where it will hit the switches... hmm... I wonder if I can position one blaster to hit the switches and the TV... hmmmmm...

You should be good now then. Curios still if one would hit your 2 targets.

Never heard of someone doing that with the Maestros until they mentioned it here.

I was thinking of trying it with just one of the blasters to start with - placing it above the double doors between the rear speakers so it would hopefully hit the light switch (indicated by the green box in this horribly done drawing of where I was going to put my can lights) and also the TV in the front of the room.

My only concern would be if people were standing in the room - they could block the signal.
Ran into a roadblock programming my "hit play dim the lights" macro...

I got the command to save correctly ... BUT when I attempt to use it, it is sent out via RF because it is a blu-ray player command... Which means that unless I have an emitter in front of the lights, I'm out of luck.

Once my mini-blasters come from Logitech I will be able to put a Y splitter off of plug "A" on the RF extender - run one side of it to the emitter on my br player, and the other to the mini blaster for the lights and we should be good to go. In the meantime - guess I'll have to do things the old fashioned way... With more than one button press!
^^
For some reason, when I tried to do that exact same thing and use a splitter for the emitter, it did not work. So I had to run a second line from the RF base station...
Hopefully you will have a better outcome!

I had a bunch of BB credits and gift cards so I went down and purchased this. Man they really need to update their software. I'm installing 32-bit Windows 7 right now in a VM to get around the poor Lion support.

For those of you following along at home, my distance from blaster to dimmers is almost exactly 12 feet...

Good to know. Mine will probably be around the 15 foot mark. I will be able to move the RF extender 2-3 feet closer, if need be.
