The Official AVS Super Bowl XLIII on NBC HD Smack Talk Topic!

Back by popular demand!

Although this year's plot may not be quite as compelling as last year's Super Bowl, there are more than enough story lines to keep us churning out the trash talk well into the NBC pregame show 'Today', which starts Super Bowl Sunday morning at 8am. No, I'm not kidding.

Excerpted from ESPN, Philly.com, National Post, Arizona Republic, and myself:

- One of the more interesting aspects - If the Steelers win, they will have a record breaking 6 Super Bowl wins.

- Cardinals head coach Ken Whisenhunt and assistant head coach Russ Grimm were both previously Steeler assistants and potentially head coaching candidates when Mike Tomlin nabbed the job two years ago.

- What will Steeler defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau come up with regarding Cardinal receiver Larry Fitzgerald?

- Steelers receiver Hines Ward says he would be able to play even if the game was this Sunday, in spite of the fact he suffered a sprained medial collateral ligament in his knee last Sunday in the AFC championship game against Baltimore. This type of injury can typically sideline a player for an extended period.

- What will have a higher rating: this SB or Barack Obama's inauguration?

- Similarly, in Bruce Springsteen's head, what's a bigger deal: playing "We Are One" or Super Bowl XLIII halftime?

- This could be the last Super Bowl called by the Al Michaels/John Madden duo. As such, where do you have them all-time as an announcing pair?

- The Cardinals, as the home team, chose to wear their red home jerseys.

- The Steelers will wear their white road uniforms against Arizona in the Super Bowl, just as they did when they defeated Seattle for the NFL title three years ago in Detroit.

- Super Bowl winners John Elway, Lynn Swann and Roger Craig will take part in the coin toss before the game.

- Joe Namath will participate in the presentation of the Vince Lombardi Trophy presentation after the game. Suzy Kolber, on the other hand, will be in protective custody, in an undisclosed location until well after the game. Damn, wouldn't it be great if ESPN gave her a one day release to do the trophy presentation on NBC? ( http://video.aol.com/video-detail/jo...all/3936055838 )

Go Cards. Steelers fans have had much to celebrate over the years, while we Cards fans have been wandering the desert for 20 years. It's our turn for something to remember!

Oh, by the way, Steelers are 7 point favorites.

- didnt the inaug only have 39,000,000 viewers ?....the super bowl will get 90,000,000 & 140,000,000 total.

- mike tomlin would be the youngest coach to ever win a super bowl.

- kurt warner if he wins clinches (even though i think hes in already) a hall of fame ticket.

- will the cards wear all red (as theyve sometimes done) or just red shirt/white pants ?

- will there be a camera looking right down the goal line, like a photo finish camera in horse racing, for goal line touchdown calls ?

- why do the steelers only have their insignia on the right side of the helmet ?

Somewhat little known historical Steelers fact:

In 1969, when picking a head coach, the Steelers considered Chuck Noll, but then decided they wanted to go with someone older, more experienced and with more national recognition. They offered the job to Joe Paterno instead. When he declined, Noll got the job.

Couple more tidbits about the Steelers:
- They have no cheerleaders
- They don't retire player's numbers
- When Arizona last won the Championship in 1947, the Steelers lost a playoff with the Eagles to play the Cards. That was the last playoff game for the Steelers for 25 years. They would not play another playoff game until the "Immaculate Reception".

Oh, and despite Steeler fans' claims to the contrary, we do actually drink Iron City Beer for the symbolism - not the taste.

I predict Steelers by 10-14pts.. Lets send Warner back to Walbaums or Pathmark, wherever he worked packing groceries..The Cinderella team Cardinals get their carriage turned back into a pumpkin by Pitt.

Ain't that the truth.

I'd always heard about Iron City Beer, and the first time I was in a Pittsburgh bar, I tried one. The next one was anything else.

From NBC Sports, Trash Talk by Michael Ventre

QB chess match will be Super

A good plot is always better when it contains an intriguing subplot.
When the Arizona Cardinals and Pittsburgh Steelers square off in Super Bowl XLIII on February 1, the chess match within the chess match will take place between Kurt Warner and Ben Roethlisberger. Think Bobby Fischer and Boris Spassky, only with pads and helmets, and in Tampa rather than Reykjavik.

Both quarterbacks have won Super Bowls. Warner led the Rams to two Super Bowls, winning one after the 1999 season, a 23-16 decision over the Tennessee Titans. Roethlisberger directed the Steelers past the Seattle Seahawks, 21-10, after the 2005 season.

This is the first time two quarterbacks with Super Bowl victories under their belts have squared off in the ultimate game since Oakland’s Jim Plunkett and Washington’s Joe Theismann met to decide Super Bowl XVIII in 1984, which was won by the Raiders, 38-9.

The quarterback position is at the center of any football game. In the Super Bowl, it is hugely important. So having two quarterbacks who have been through the media scrutiny and have endured the layoff before the game and the hoopla and the buildup -- not to mention the actual intensity of the game itself -- is priceless.

Also, Warner is 37 and on the downside of his miraculous career, although he’s still playing well.

Roethlisberger is only 26. Can the geezer outfox the punk?

There are plenty of points of interest in any Super Bowl. But in this one the quarterbacks will have a particularly prominent place on the marquee.

They sound like the poster boys for the No Fun League. No cheerleaders? Well, it is Pittsburgh, after all. They'd have to import cute girls from Morgantown to fill out a squad.

If they would bring Danielle back to replace Jody as the "Maximum Cardinals" host, I would be a Cards fan again. Rooting for the Cards is like rooting for the Cubs or Lions.

I agree, Ben is a punk, however the Steelers have a defense.
Steelers 37, Cards 16.
Guarantee the Steelers won't be giving Fitz and Boldin a free release at the line like the Eagles did. Warner's quick-release will be a non-factor, and without a running game, I conservatively see a Pittsburgh blowout coming.

Pittsburgh 41
Arizona 23
The Steelers better win this game, because if they don't, losing to the Cardinals in the SB is one of those things you'll NEVER hear the end of.

Steelers can't stop Fitz:

Cardinals 28

Steelers 24

The Steelers aren't the only NFL team without cheerleaders. The Bears, Packers, Lions, Browns, Giants, and Jets also don't have them.

?

That is quite a number considering it is during the workday. Not to mention all the people who watched on the internet.

the jets kinda do now....theyre called "the flight crew" at the games now.

How are the Cardinals the home team?
Odd numbered SB = NFC Home team
Even numbered SB = AFC Home team

That sounds familiar, but Super Bowl XL would have had the AFC as home team, so wouldn't the Steelers have worn their black jerseys?

the steelers were home....they chose white because they were 3-0 on the road in the playoffs wearin white....they wanted to keep the streak going.

good post from Ken H on the other SB forum about halftime songs.. too bad Glenn Cambell wasn't on, he could have sang " By the time I get to Phoenix" after the Cardinals loose.. great thread , keep it going!!
A couple of other things:

- The last time a 9 win team made it to the SuperBowl: 1980 (1979 season) Rams.....Lost to the Steelers
- If the Steelers win, there will be only one other team that had a tougher regular season schedule....those 1979 Steelers that beat the Rams.

These Arizona fans seem to be on drugs and have lost touch with reality. Unless the Steelers stink up the place, Arizona won't win. The Chargers are very similar to Arizona, but better than Arizona, both on offense and defense. They just ran into the Steelers first.

Or, like the Panthers did (Fitz, anyway), CPanther95. How quickly they forget.

Then I'm really glad I live in Charlotte and not Chicago, Green Bay, Detroit, Cleveland, and New York (not to mention the afore-mentioned Pittsburg). Notice those are all cold weather cities. Maybe they can't find enough pretty gals who want to get out there and shake their thangs in sub-zero weather. Who could blame 'em?

Panthers' problem wasn't not covering Fitz, it was their receivers not covering the Cards' DBs.

Actually, it was both including, as you allude, Jake channeling Favre (and not the MVP, future HoF version). But hey, who's complaining? The price of my seat literally would have tripled for a second home playoff game. At least I got to live the agony from the comfort of my own couch, bathed in the magnificence of my own HD-HT display. It soothed the pain, somewhat.

If that were true, it'd be called Aluminum City Beer.

Been waiting for Springsteen to get an SB halftime show. Looking forward to cranking up the volume for that!
I'm pretty sure there can only be smack talk when both teams have fans.
And anybody representin' as a Cardinals' fan on these boards now is just plain lying.
I just want them to keep it in the NFC - otherwise, just hoping for a good game!
