HDMI 1.2 and 1.3 video / audio receiver passthrough question

Thread Starter
I currently own the Harmon Kardon AVR247 receiver. It offers HDMI audio / video pass through. However, i just realized it is only compliant to HDMI version 1.2a standards, and not the most current 1.3a standard. And I am running a Playstation 3 and a Sony Blu-ray player (both 1.3a compliant) through the receiver to my tv (Samsung LN52A860) which is also 1.3a compliant. My question is am I losing video and / or audio quality by routing my video / audio signal through this receiver that is only 1.2a compliant? Or is there no difference since there is not any device that actually supports "Deep Color" and the higher bandwidth that HDMI 1.3a was designed for? I just don't want to be actually degrading my video and / or audio signal by running it through this receiver. Any help would be appreciated...thanks..

You're fine. The only thing that may matter that you can't do is send Hidef Audio bitstreams (TrueHD, DTS-MA) from your Sony BD player (if it can) to your receiver for decoding.

Actually, I was wondering this?

I am not a believer that HDMI deep color does anything but for those with an HDMI 1.1 / HDMI 1.2 receiver, can DEEP COLOR pass through it if it is from an DEEP COLOR HDMI 1.3 capable Blu Ray player (through the HDMI 1.2 receiver) and then on to a HDMI 1.3 DEEP COLOR capable display??

But i heard some receivers even if the hdmi is going throught it, it does not process the sound.. you'll have to use a separate optical cable. is this true?

Its weird tho..

Larry,

My receiver, JVC RX-D702B has two v1.1 hdmi inputs and one v1.0 out (monitor out). Will a new v1.3 single cable to my Projector be all I need to harness the new hdmi features of my PS3 and Blu-ray player, which are v1.3 compliant, or do I have to bypass my current receiver with separate cables directly to my projector using the receiver solely for sound?
Thanks in advance. BTW, does anyone know if the firmware in this receiver can be upgraded to a newer hdmi version?

The only difference between the various HDMI versions as far as the cable goes, is the higher signal frequency response of the later versions (such as from a 1080p signal). Most cables (and possibly the receiver) can carry the higher frequency signal without a problem. The best thing is to try it and see. If the picture looks ok, then an upgrade won't improve anything. HDMI has no subtle degradation that you have to worry about.

I might be a little late to reply but I had to bypass my receiver due to loosing the 1080p. My TV shows what it is receiving and the best I could get going through the receiver was 1080i. Now that my TV is 3D ready with the special 3D adapter I may try again but have read that all the HDMI switching etc needs to be 1.4 compliant. We will see

Yes, many of the inexpensive AV receivers just pass through the video/audio signal because the expense of the circuitry required to extract the audio from HDMI signal (which has the video and audio on the same signal). Thus you have to use a separate cable for sound.

To me it's false advertising when they say a receiver will pass HDMI without mentioning, in large print, that it doesn't extract the audio. Sometimes it's buried in the operators manual. It rather defeats the idea of HDMI being a single cable hookup. This also means the receiver will not get lossless audio from a BluRay player unless the analog audio outputs from the BluRay are used, since lossless audio can not be transmitted on the digital/optical signal.
