Best way to adjust grayscale using only RGB Gains?

I just found out how to access the "factory menu" on my Toshiba 40RV525U and it looks like the only controls I can adjust are R,G,B gain. The menu is very barebones with something called "source calibration" that is grayed out, but I don't see any other color temp controls.

I tried a calibration using a Spyder2 w/HCFR and compromised the high-end IREs for accurate low-end ones. I dialed in the 30 IRE to pretty much flat, which left a blue and green oversaturation on the higher end. The results aren't horrible, but the fleshtones are a little too golden and unnatural looking.

I realize I am not going to get perfect numbers, but I was hoping that there is a way to get decent color temp with limited controls.

Thanks.

Generally I would reccomend using 50-60% if you only have one RGB adjustment. Your goal is to get Delta E under 3. As you know it won't be perfect. You do want it to be somewhat even across the entire range with the lower portion being more important(variences are more noticavle us at lower levels).

I would also reccomend that you take full greyscale readings for the different color temperature presets.

What would that tell me?

Thanks.

I'm assuming so you can find the most accurate preset and start from there.

Yes, so you can look at their differences for greyscale accuracy and gamma/luminance curve.

ie: one preset may have the most accurate greyscale but the luminance curve may be way off.

By knowing this you might choose the one with the better luminance curve and then see if you can get greyscale good from there.
