All:

I hired a company to install in in-ceiling Definitive Technology UIW RSSII speakers as my side surrounds.

The owners manual states that Def Tech officially recommends that cross braces be installed between the ceiling joists so that 2 long screws can be screwed into them (or the ceiling joists or one joist/one cross brace) to hold the speaker in addition to the dogleg clamps around the perimeter of the speaker.

When the installer arrived, he said that he could install the speaker next to a ceiling joist and screw one side of the speaker into the joist with a 4 inch screw). His feeling was that the RSSII was as heavy as other speakers he had installed with just the perimeter clips, so having that long screw through there should be secure. He felt that installing the crossbraces since the basement was already finished would require a bigger hole in the ceilng, etc., and he reiterated in his judgement the speaker would be very secure. So, he screwed in one side of the speaker and tightened down the dog leg braces.

After the install, the speaker did feel very securely installed--no vibration, movement, etc., even when directly pushed by me or when playing. This is an 8 foot ceiling that is a standard drywall ceiling.

However, I'm wondering--what do you think? Do you think Def Tech was just playing it safe by suggesting 2 screws. The RSSII weighs 13 pounds--does anyone here know of speakers this heavy being secured with just clips? (I found some speakertechs that weigh 11 pounds just held in with clips?). I just would hate to have a speaker fall on someone, but the installer was pretty experienced and felt things would be OK. (I guess I'm looking for some real world reassurance here )
