Powering a non-powered subwoofer?

So I have a HTIB setup. All of the speakers including the subwoofer are plugged into the receiver via positive and negative wires. All of the wires are plugged directly into the speakers. I could not change the wires unless I opened up there cases. looks like this

Anyways, I changed out the receiver and this new one uses the rca type input seen on subs that are self powered. So I'll probably just end up buying a $100-$150 sub, but I am curious. Is there anyway to power this sub without pulling a ghetto rig and

Plugging the sub into one receiver, then have the input of that receiver go to my main receiver's sub outputs.

I know I could hook up a small car amp or something, but I dont have one laying around. Any ideas or should I just go and buy a self powered one?

You could use an amp?

It's how most people power Diy subs.

For budget subs look at the Dayton series.
