"The Good, The Bad & The Ugly" - German BluRay specs

20th Century Fox Germany has announced the release of Sergio Leone's classic The Good, The Bad And The Ugly (Il buono, il brutto, il cattivo).

TB&U is the final installment of the Dollars trilogy, and is apparently the first one to be released on BluRay by MGM (same procedure as they did with the Special Editions of their Leone catalogue). The other two titles are already available in Italy:
- "Fistful of Dollars" - contains English mono soundtrack and English subtitles for the feature film
- "For a Few Dollars More" - contains Italian audio only, however it is fully uncut (the MGM release is not).

Anyway, FOX Germany was the first to make an official announcement and declare the specs. The selection of the audio tracks hint that this will be a Pan-European + Asia release, so it will be probably locked to "Code B+C".

The release date is 04/24/2009 (retail)

UPD: Oh yeah, this is of course the Extended Version (identical to the Italian version except it contains the Grotto scene and the less violent American version of the Tuco torture scene).

The differences to the Special Edition DVD are following:
- Additional Commentary track by Sir Christopher Frayling
- English 1.0 Mono audio track
- Italian 2.0 Mono audio track (only R1 DVD had this one before)

Also, I wonder if they included the original theatrical trailer (the SE contained only the French trailer with unseen footage; only the first DVD edition contained the English trailer)

German cover art:

Disc Specifications:
Picture format: 2.35:1
System: HD 1080p
Media: BD50
Packaging: Amaray

- DTS 5.1 German

- Dolby Digital 1.0 English
- Dolby Digital 2.0 (mono) Italian
- Dolby Digital 5.1 French
- Dolby Digital 5.1 Portuguese
- Dolby Digital 2.0 Thai

Subtitles:
- English for Hard of Hearing, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Mandarin, Korean, Thai

Extra Features:
- Audio Commentary by film historian Richard Schickel
- Audio Commentary by Sir Christopher Frayling

- Leone's West
- Leone's Style

- Restoration Italian Style: The Good, The Bad & The Ugly

Good news for fans inside E.U.
Bad news for fans outside E.U.
Ugly news if FOX region locks this BD.

There are two kinds of people in the world, my friend. Those in the EU and Asia, and the people who will have to wait for the Region A release.

If this has excellent PQ and is not region locked... then it's a must-buy for me

One question: is it confirmed that this will only be the longer cut with the recently dubbed English dialogue? No US theatrical cut through seamless branching?

The reason I'm asking is because of the inclusion of an English 1.0 track, which would in that case either have to be a downmix of the 5.1 remix (kind of pointless), or better the original soundtrack with a new 1.0 mix for the added sections.

One of my all time favorites. Used to watch this all the time on Saturday afternoons when I was a kid. Hopefully, it will be region free.

I actually would like to get the shorter cut (the theatrical release?). I got the long DVD cut and don't like some of the "slack". This is one of my all time favorite movies, it's too bad you can only get the bloated version

I have no such info; the info by Fox says "178 minutes" only. I suppose this will be only the longer cut.

There definitely is a mono version of the English track extended cut of the film; it featured on German TV via terrestric two-channel sound (German on one channel, English on another). Don't know why they didn't include it on any DVD release. However I also don't have any info if it is actually unedited (i.e. without new sound effects).

And it is the original soundtrack/effects etc? But with the new dub for the additional scenes?

I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

The Good, The Bad & The Ugly will also be released in the Nordic countries on April 8. Previous dvd editions have been released by MGM/Fox so I assume so will be this BD. Release details are still unknown.

High definition exists purely for the purpose of showing this film in all its glory.

All the other BD and HD DVD releases are a footnote.

They'd better get it right!
