Powered Monitors just for enjoyment, Not Mixing

Did some searching around but I'd like to get some opinions. Being a college student with not so much money and space, powered monitors seem like the best option for some decent sound (besides headphones which I already own, pair of AKG k701s). Will powered monitors still image well if I place them a few feet apart and sit on the couch 6-8 feet away? Will they produce a decent sound stage at that distance? Mostly looking for a speaker that will be very versatile at this point. Something that I can sit down while relaxing and listen to some jazz or classical and later in the night turn up the volume and rock out to some metal.

I was looking at the Audioengine A5's but for a little bit more I can get into something like the KRK Rokits which I think will get louder more easily and be more dynamic than the Audioengines.

The Mackie's are a bit more than I wanted to spend but if they are as good as everyone says, I'll probably wait and save up the extra cash.

Just an update...

I ended up just going with a pair of the Audioengine A5's and I'm pretty impressed to be honest. Obviously they aren't up to the same level as the Mackie monitors but for the price they are great. Neutral and fairly detailed with good recordings but they handle some of the lower quality mp3's without too much fuss. Imaging is decent as well considering placement and the low-end is more then sufficient for the time being (I still have some logitech's that I can use for the boomy stuff) though I'll probably add a sub down the line.

Running them through iTunes and a inexpensive Beresford DAC.

Highly recommend for college students looking for some decent sound on a budget
