sell me on my first blu ray

Thread Starter
I just bought my first blu ray player from a friend and don't have a single movie yet! I want to get something good for my first movie. I would like a combination of good video quality and audio quality, as well as a good movie in general. So with no experience with these discs I need some guidance in my first purchase.

King Kong is a mindblowing BD with reference video and audio. Simply amazing. Many would disagree but one of the best popcorn movies available.

I, Robot - great PQ, AQ, and story to boot.

Simple answer... look at the "Tier 0" list in the PQ tier thread and/or the "reference quality" / tier 0 list in the audio thread. From there, pick a movie that you consider a "good movie in general".

(FWIW, the PQ/AQ of King Kong BD is quite good, as the prior poster mentioned - I won't purport to guess if you consider it a 'good movie in general' or not though. I rented it from Netflix as I doubt I'd watch it more than once)

There are plenty to chose from, check the artistic grain thread and Ralph Potts "Reviewers Recommendations" for starters. Out of the titles I own if I wanted to impress someone I would chose any of the following:

Apocalypto
Hellboy II
I' Robot
Bourne Trilogy
POTC: AWE
MI: III
The Island
The Descent
Tropic Thunder
The Fall

There are plenty more but those are a few that come to mind.

Bourne Trilogy, especially Ultimatum.

These two links are the best place to start.

Couldn't agree more. IMO this is THE overall demo material for live action movies.

If you are more impressed with animation, go with Wall-E, pay no attention to the fact that Kung Fu Panda is ranked higher.

OP: Congrats on your BR purchase. I've quoted the post above me, since that is the place to start for suggestions. One of the reasons were started those "tier" threads is to answer questions like you've posed.
