Buy a dual format player or HD-DVD player ?

What would you guys do in my situation? I have one HD-DVD player and about 20 HD-DVD's. I want to be covered in case my HD-DVD player dies down the road. I also want to buy a Blu-ray player soon. Should I buy another HD-DVD player(for backup) and a blu-ray player, or should I buy one dual format player? I know nothing about the combo players. Thanks.

It matters? If you want a BD 2.0 player ie BD Live etc. you do not want a dual format player. Neither the Samsung or the LG will be BD 2.0 capable. but if you want a standard Blu-ray. then go for it.

Unless you are short on space or HDMI inputs, you are likely better off with two players. No combo player plays every HD DVD or even every Blu-Ray without issues. Usually two players are cheaper than one combo player depending on what kind of deal you get.

When I bought my BH200 the only other profile 1.1 players available were the PS3 and the Panny DMP-BD30. That made the BH200 almost a no brainer other than the PS3 at the time. Now, there are plenty of profile 2.0 players that decode everything available for less than $300. Some of them even upscale well.

Im in the same situation but have the bh200.

My solution was to buy a PC to hook up fulltime to my Tv, I use it mainly for brwsing and watching avi files, it has a bluray/hd drive and to my eye I cant see any difference to the Lg player in PQ, and with the powerdvd8 software I can change regions easily for bluray. Theres also a method to reset the 5 region changes, a great future backup i think!

For just 20 discs, don't bother - you aren't invested enough to justify the additional cost. Why put good money after bad at this point? I have two BH 200's, but that's because I have 100+ HD-DVD's. For 20 discs, you can likely migrate those titles to BD at sale/reasonable prices.

Just get a decent BD player. Spending extra money for a dually make no sense - good money after bad.

Great advice there. I have BH200 and the only reason I bought it was the 80 HD-DVD's I have. If not I would have just bought a PS3 (that I am buying anyway). I do have 2 Xbox 360 HD-DVD add ons, but I wanted a standalone that can play all my discs.

I don't know, there is something nice about having one player that you can pop nearly any ole disk into and have it play...

...plus the PS3 sucks electricity. (Or maybe it just sucks. Sorry, couldn't resist.)

I have several of the BH200s and at least 1 HD-DVD only tosh player. I like the convience of having one player, but at this point unless you are limited on space I'd go with two players and a universal remote.
